OP Could you please give us the source of this statement?

Some people are exempt because of disability but not just because they are on unemployment benefit.

Yep, the press have certainly done a number on people... making out that being on benefits means you can flaunt hosepipe bans... and also making out that people on benefits pay less for their water than everyone else. So then, yet again, people get mad at people on benefits.
Both are bollocks.

You think parents of children with disabilities have a cushy lifestyle ?

That doesn't make you just unkind. I'd get deleted if I said what it does make you though.

Let's analyse the situation we have these days though, the disability benefits bill goes up by billions every year, every other kid is being told they are disabled now! There's plenty of working adults with ADHD and autism that are working and living normal lives and we're never told they were disabled and their parents given free hand outs when they were kiss!
it's took the mick that much that Spain refuses to acknowledge the sunflower lanyards anymore, more and more places including Disneyland are appearing in the news for saying that all these families treating ADHD and autism as severe disabilities are causing chaos in disabled access lines to rides etc! It's become shameful!

The future is not good! What the benefit bill bw like when when over half the kids tidau refuse to work because they raised being told they are disabled! How many parents nowadays claim to have three kids and claim every kid has a list of syndromes! The future is bloody bleak if.oeoplw don't stop writing so many kids off!

Before you all get too frothy, it's worth understanding the detail here and not just the click-bait headlines.

Water companies in England have announced that customers on their 'Priority Services Register' and 'WaterSure tariff' scheme, alongside Blue Badge holders, are exempt from the hosepipe ban. This is because people who meet the criteria for these registers/ schemes are more likely than the general population to have difficulty using watering cans, purchasing bottled water, etc. due to disability, low income and other things of that nature.

The water companies have advised that, rather than risking confusing messaging about who is and isn't exempt, which could result in someone vulnerable thinking they are banned from various water uses when they're actually exempt, they have taken the blanket approach of granting all those on the WaterSure tariff the exemption in order to ensure disabled people were not put at risk, and to avoid confusion.

This means that people who are on the WaterSure tariff by reason of their being on benefits are technically exempt from the ban, but that isn't the intended purpose of the exemption, which is to ensure that disabled or otherwise vulnerable people/ families can still access the water they need safely. Everyone is being encouraged by the water companies to use water mindfully.

I know that's MUCH less exciting than getting in a rage about perceived two tier bans and unfairness, but isn't it better to be truthful about these things?

The problem is that there are news articles stating differently!

XenoBitch · 15/07/2026 19:31

This 💯

It just people annoyed that others have something they don't, but they ignore the reason why.
I am sure people on the priority registers etc would rather they did not need to be on them to begin with.

I’m on the National Grid priority register for no reason, they just put me on it, I was quite surprised when I got the email and I think also a letter. I thought I may have been hacked. I had just retired so don’t know if they had been notified because of that

FlyingCatGirl · 16/07/2026 06:44

Whammyammy · 14/07/2026 14:45

Absolutely ridiculous. Either a total ban or not at all. People will now totally ignore it, including me.
My grandkids are not missing out simply because we all work for a living.

But can you understand the situation that it causes when not only do we have a increasing amount of people squeezing their way into the benefits system every year who may potentially be allowed to ignore the hosepipe ban - and you need to digest that only two water companies have this rule, the rest don't! But if lots of you act childish about it and abuse it because you hate people on benefits, you hate the water board shareholders and all that stuff that stupid people spout when there's a hosepipe ban, you push people towards ending on standpipes like they did in the 70's! Do you realise what that means? It means water supplies go off to probably everybody but the most vulnerable! That's most people living on water out of buckets that they have to queue for!

Never mind paddling pools, your selfish actions could leave families without water to even run a bath or shower! You'd be pouring water from the standpipe into your toilet cistern once or twice a day just so you can occasionally flush it! People like you that make these threats always seem to assume that your neighbours wouldn't report you! A £1000 per fill of the paddling pool is a lot of money! It won't rain more to mitigate the selfishness!

FlyingCatGirl · 16/07/2026 06:55

Mespher · 15/07/2026 08:01

We could hose our garden as neighbours can’t see what you are doing. The ones where the neighbours can see are generally those streets of tightly packed houses and new estates. DH was going to use the watering can when we get back tomorrow from holiday but I’m a good mind to use the hose now. They take us for fools

Only two water companies have said about exemptions, people have to stop wanting to abuse the water out of spite because once these reservoirs reach crisis point, the risk of standpipes threatens us all including those of us that work and don't claim benefits.

Don't waste the resource when you can see with your own eyes that there isn't the rainfall to replace it!

Lugol · 16/07/2026 07:03

Just more of the divide and conquer strategy these governments seem to be employing.

While everyone is arguing about this and all the other nonsense they keep throwing at us they fuck us over further.

Firetreev · 16/07/2026 07:12

angelos02 · 14/07/2026 14:23

Nothing this government does surprises me anymore. Everything they do seems to be against people that work! Unless you need more water for medical equipment - that is the only reason I can fathom. Why does someone have more right to fill a paddling pool or water their garden than anyone else? I literally can't think of a reason.

Jesus. Please educate yourself. The government doesn't make these decisions, it's the water companies.

SENcatsandfish · 16/07/2026 07:17

It's quite misleading to say that everyone on benefits doesn't have to adhere to the hosepipe ban.

I am exempt because I have a physical disability that means I can't lift a watering can. I'll still save water how im able to though.

Ive attached a photo of the email I received about bring a priority customer and why I may be excempt but might take a minute to load.

AIBU to question no hosepipe ban exemption for people on benefits?

Why the heck are plants more important than the other things? Your shrubs and pots are no more important than a kid’s paddling pool. This is just middle-class entitlement; my needs are more socially acceptable than yours.

I think we’ve caught a live “I love my astroturf” poster….

HelpMeGetThrough · 16/07/2026 07:54

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/07/2026 14:56

@TopPocketFind ha ha! Hosepipe bans do seem to be some sort of middle class rage bait bat signal. I've never really understood it, I am not sure why domestic household would have such a pressing a need to move that much water from one place to another that it becomes such an anxiety inducing issue for some

It’s hot tubs for the adults and paddling pools for their little darlings.

Stick the little fuckers in the bath, job done.

OneElatedOpalDuck · 16/07/2026 08:00

This is why social media sucks sometimes.

Someone sees or hears something, doesn't do even the slightest bit of research before getting outraged and posting about it, then dozens of other people don't even read any of the replies and get outraged too.

There's no excuse, if you're posting on SM you literally have the entire internet on whatever device you're using to post on.

Use it to find out instead of using it to spread misinformation.

Tableforjoan · 16/07/2026 08:02

Winnie9 · 15/07/2026 22:50

I will be continuing to use my hose - I will be watering my plants and filling up my dogs paddling pool and may even change my hot tub water. Why? Because I had a water meter installed 3 months ago and since then water has been pumping in to my front garden at a steady rate ever since. The water company were called - water inspector admitted liability but since then 20 phone calls each one to a call centre, each visit by a contractor who says we don’t deal with leaks on the property - even though the water meter chamber is flooded with water. Went to the complaints team and now with the ombudsman. We have a 4k water bill - we have obviously not used that q amount of water in 3 months! When I saw all the adverts about saving water - which I usually scrupulously follow, I laughed. not this year.

Thats what happened to us. Lots of emails and letters fix your leak before we do and bill you. You are wasting 1ltr a minute then 5ltrs a minute and so on.

First email we got we where actually on holiday and panicked like oh shit the house is leaking. Asked the person sitter and they where like nope no your not.

Right after they fitted a smarter meter on it. Took forever for them to finally fix their leak. The man who did said it’s happened so many times that the team who swapped them over must of been blind 🫣

LilyBunch25 · 16/07/2026 08:04

There is no blanket exemption for "those on benefits" There is exemption with some water companies to those registered disabled, blue badge holders, and some on low income tariffs. However, it varies from provider to provider. I know it was not in your interest to clarify this as this is the type of short post designed to stir up anger and resentment.

YABU - you have no idea of my situation. My kids like to go in our above ground pool after school. They splash a lot and stand on the edge so it needs topping up most days. But why shouldn't we get to have fun just because of a few grumpy neighbours.

I'm afraid this type of post is what is causing resentment. As I posted earlier there is no blanket exemption for benefits, so I'm assuming you have an exemption via watersure as low income, or a disability category? There are plenty of people who will resent your comment after coming home from work and, I'm guessing, listening to your kids playing in the pool and probably not getting much peace and quiet, because you included "a few grumpy neighbours." How do you know they're grumpy, or have they made their feelings clear to you because they do feel its unfair you can do this and perhaps they can't?

You're completely accurate, I posted similar but nowhere near as clearly as you did. I think resentment is spreading because due to the recent hot weather, lots of home pool use, there have been a lot of cases of households using and constantly topping up pools, and causing nuisance and resentment to neighbours. So many do see a potential abuse of the exemption.

LilyBunch25 · 16/07/2026 08:15

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/07/2026 14:51

Also what the hell is everyone suddenly so anxious to use a hosepipes for - I don't think i have ever even owned a hosepipe in 28 years of being an adult.

In many cases, garden pools.

LilyBunch25 · 16/07/2026 08:31

SakuraTea · 15/07/2026 07:54

I don't know where you are. But I am on south coast and am definitely exempt due to disability but not on any benefits

Most water companies offering the exemption include blue badge holders so check with the water provider. The blue badge doesn't need to be accompanied by a disability benefit for the exemption where it is offered by the water provider; some blue badges are awarded based on medical assessment when there is no qualifying benefit to grant one automatically.
Edited to clarify I may have quoted the wrong comment.

LilyBunch25 · 16/07/2026 08:34

DontBuyAnotherBook · 15/07/2026 10:39

I was hoping to get the water cheaper as my son is obsessed with running taps and he does have DLA but we don't have a water meter. We do get a bit off due to being on UC but be nice to get more off. We have two children.

You can get tap locks in some cases to help with this.

LilyBunch25 · 16/07/2026 08:38

ClarkeandNewman · 15/07/2026 11:38

A little disingenuous. The majority of people with children under 5 are "on benefits" (child benefit).

With respect I think we all know that child benefit does not and never has provided any additional qualification for any additional support.

LilyBunch25 · 16/07/2026 08:58

AnonyMumAuDHD · 14/07/2026 17:23

On this basis I shall continue to water my lawn and my pollinators - my resident daughter is both a PIP recipient and a blue badge holder so we are exempt. I wasn’t going to make use of her exemption but, given my DH pays a six figure tax sum every year to subsidise all those benefits, spent a fortune in money and all his leisure time for years building and maintaining our garden, I am now of the fuck’em mindset.

You see, this really doesn't help things. My DH has the same exemptions due to military service disability. I work, pay tax, etc, and we have a big garden that has also cost an absolute fortune to establish. However, other than additional water I need indoors due to his medical conditions, as I am able bodied and he does not live alone I do not and would not need to use the hosepipe ban exemption we have, as I am capable (as you are by the sound of it) of watering without. I used the water butts until they ran dry and now use the watering can. It takes much longer but I enjoy doing it. I don't need to use the exemption and neither do you. I am just as irritated as many by abuse of the exemption to constantly refill pools etc but, the intention originally was to allow those needing, say, hydrotherapy from exercise pools and to be able to do so. This means there are families with the exemption either via watersure, blue badge or disability benefits upsetting their non exempt neighbours on a regular basis with their pool antics; the exemption opened this up and thats just how it is. For the record I have just one such neighbour and after a hard days work no I don't particularly enjoy the constant and raucous child screaming knowing no one in that house has been at work for the past 365 days plus. However, I literally don't feel that means I can use the exemption "just because they do." Also, regardless of a slight reduction people have on watersure, being on a meter means they will still get an eye watering bill in the autumn which I'll doubtless hear them arguing about as I did last year....I make sure my precious plants are watered well, manually, but as I already use a lot of water for hubby I am conscious of the bill, too.
Edit for spelling typo.
