I told my friend about my crush on Postman Pat and she suggested he was gay. AIBU or is she?

I confessed to a friend that I had a bit of a crush on Postman Pat. He’s not the most conventionally attractive man, but he has a calming way about him, and is clearly a capable problem solver and provider. He’ll also have a good public sector pension, and security is a big plus for me.

I mentioned this to a friend and she said I had “no chance”. She said Pat was a middle-aged single man with a cat, and I should “read between the lines”.

AIBU or is my friend just jealous?

Apparently she was first seen on tv in 1991. She was a sahm till julian went off to school
becoming more independent.

There is a whole Pat fandom wiki 🤣🤣

I know this is a lighthearted post about a tv character. But I wanted to say how boring it is that we still stereotype people and sexuality in this way.
A middle-aged single man with a cat, must be gay, why? Because he’s never met the “one”? What if he likes dogs instead of cats, is that more heterosexual?
I am a middle-age single woman, do people assume I’m gay too?
Its all just so dated and judgemental.

A middle aged man who lives down our street and works for the post office is single but I don’t think he’s gay. He’s the only child of Catholic parents, lived with them for many years. Big local footie fan attends their matches.

I’d assume you’d had enough of men’s bullshit tbh 🤷🏻‍♀️

Postman Pat irritates me because he’s utterly incompetent. He may solve problems, but he creates the problem in the first place! He would be a much better postman if he didn’t waste time cocking things up and then having to sort out whatever mess he’s made.

Everyone in Greendale always praises him for saving the day but really he should have got the sack years ago.

Yes definitely married with a kid.
This book was published 1999

Looks like he’s inherited his dad’s hair and nose.

pambeesleyhalpert · 09/07/2026 17:09

He’s married with a child!

pambeesleyhalpert · 09/07/2026 17:10

Peachykeenjosephine · 09/07/2026 16:56

That's what I thought. And Julian his nephew. There's nothing in that book to suggest they're married. There's hope yet, OP!

On the tv show he’s definitely married and Julian calls him dad

Snufkin88 · 09/07/2026 17:12

Loads of people I’ve spoken to about cartoon crushes had a crush on Shredder from teenage mutant ninja turtles and I can understand this . I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who had a crush on postman Pat .

It was Master Mate, Tom the Cabin Boy, and Seaman Stains was an urban myth #Justice for Pugwash.
If you want to know about the Magic Roundabout, just ask Jasper Carrot☺️

I thought the cabin boy was Roger!!

I quite fancy Pikachu. It’s probably because he’s yellow and cuddly.

So's Homer Simpson

REP22 · 09/07/2026 17:23

Think that was Pat Mustard, the Craggy Island milkman...

I used to love Around the World with Willy Fog. But was always curious about the dynamic between Rigadon and Tico. And that Transfer was up to more than just stalking Fog and his mates, I'm sure.

Pat, I believe, is indeed straight. Fireman Sam, on the other hand... he does love that pole. 🌈

topcat2014 · 09/07/2026 17:37

I didn't realise he was a ginger

Itsthewoluff · 09/07/2026 17:39

Your friend is just jealous. You carry on crushing on that gorgeous hunk of a man!

Are you saying he emptied his sack on his sister?!

Reported.

PMSL! I read what you said and laughed, I didn't realise it was a response to my question. I laughed a bit more.

Am quite pleased someone wants to report my post, quite an achievement 😁

So's Elton John

AlphaApple · 09/07/2026 18:07

Fireman Sam was definitely a closeted gay in the original series. Mrs Price was never married and Norman was the village bastard - and red haired to boot - so had to be made into the naughty kid. Simpler times!

The low level smut in Fireman Sam (original series is the only one worth watching) was delicious.

He’s got a thing going with Bob the Builder.

Bob is defo shagging Wendy. They are more than just work colleagues - the looks they give each other and the banter.

Get a room.
😊

This had never occurred to me, but I had a childhood crush on Dogtanian so to be fair at least Pat is a gainfully employed adult man 🤣

So did I. Also on Inspector Gadget (cartoon version).

GordanoServices · 09/07/2026 18:50

I wonder how many of us had a crush on Dogtanian…also Cardinal Richelieu was attractive as a bad boy…

Me too. Although his little red tunic was a bit... short. Aramis was quite easy on the eye as well.

QuadrupleH · 09/07/2026 19:39

Pat over Fireman Sam? One a doddering, nosey inefficient postie and the other an all action firefighter?

(Although obviously Sam ignores his lovechild Norman causing him to act out all the time...)

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 09/07/2026 19:39

I only discovered recently that Jess the cat is a male

Danny Dyer agrees....

The bit about his pension made me laugh out loud and wake up my toddler.

I'm not sure I agree about his problem solving skills - he seems like a bit of a calamity to me.

I had a book in the 80s in which he went to Brighton with his family - maybe something in particular drew him to Brighton!
