Being told that as a size 18 I can’t wear certain clothes

I do appreciate that when posting canvassing for opinions on outfits etc., you will get all sorts of responses.

But I have been told a few times now that as a size 18, I should cover up and not expose too much skin, basically purely because of my size.

AIBU to think this isn’t okay? I have as much a right to get my shoulders out as any other size!

The asos model is overweight, I think you may be another who is talking about a different model.

It wasn't asos but something else. Didn't see no Asos model.

It doesn’t annoy me I just think it looks dreadful. Look at the Chat GPT image you have posted that is edited so you know it doesn’t look good.
Im sure you would feel and look so much better if you worked on losing a few stones in weight. Good luck if you decide to do that 😊

OP knows she’s overweight, she owns a mirror and probably scales
people really should go a bit more gently, overweight people can also have eating disorders and commenting how large someone is might be a tipping point back into one
you wouldn’t go telling someone with anorexia to just put a few stone on

FWIW, this is the dress I’ve ended up going for, I’ve also attached a picture of my body. I’m aware my arms are slightly loose, but that’s due to weight loss

The model is not overweight.

NoWorkToday · 06/07/2026 15:28

This is the model who people are saying is overweight. People are getting confused. Thr dress is from the curve range and seems to be in sizes 18-30. The model is a size 18.

Two things can be true though OP I suppose is posters point. Losing 10 stone is a huge achievement, absolutely well done. It can still be true as others say that certain things would look better at a lower weight.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear something you like though!

Nobody does, read the thread. You’re looking at the complete wrong photo.

I have read the thread.

Thank you, @InterIgnis for answering my question politely.

I am slightly uncomfortable with saying this, because I realise there's a lot of emotions around weight:

NO ONE should be made to feel ashamed about their body or weight.

However, there's a fascinating militant movement on Mumsnet of people who are above average BMI, who want to shout to everyone that they are fabulous and that any criticism of anything is pig ignorance, despite them starting a topic inviting people to critique a look, outfit, or even asking for advice about their weight.

I think the body positive movement is fantastic in terms of self esteem. I have of course however fallen foul many a time in my workplace, in so called 'friendship' groups, of people who believe that a tall woman in their mid-40s who runs every week shouldn't be a healthy size 10 , that I "need meat on my bones", that I "need to eat a burger", that "aren't you the lucky one" etc

Many people who self proclaim as size 12 to 20 on here do not countenance any feedback whatsoever, and are so very quick to verbally slap anyone down who wants to talk objectively.

Its why I completely steer clear of any discussions about weight any more. I realise of course that I am now in the "undesirable" camp, but it fascinates me how the sightlines have changes, we can't see anything the same way any more and it has to be a collective rejection of former aesthetics.

I'm slim. My experience on here and in RL is that people are very positive about it. Very complimentary and often express a desire to also be slim. This is bourne out by the amount of time and headspace people give to weight, diet and excercise and to clothing choices that, as PP stated 'flatter', ie, make them look thinner.
Alongside that there is an emerging movement to help women see that the size of their bodies is unimportant other than for health reasons, and that being slim isn't required to be attractive. Which I think is really positive.
I don't think there is any danger that slim and overweight are going to suddenly reverse themselves in terms of which people would prefer to be, or indeed what they have been socialised to believe to be the most desirable.
Encountering the odd person who calls you skinny or dismisses your diet and activity as 'luck' doesn't mean that all of a sudden slim is the underdog of the weight world.

hiding this thread now because apparently some people can’t hold back from being vile, well done to everyone trying to shame my body though. You must feel great about yourself!

I have reported the thread as I don’t think it’s helpful. It seems like you came on here to get everyone to agree with you and when they didn’t, you’ve got angry and called some people cunts and bitches. Hopefully mumsnet will delete it because who is benefitting from it?

Tradescanti · 06/07/2026 15:37

You're still doing it, OP, concentrating on a few negative posts out of many which are not.
Your own responses and those of a couple of posters who were supporting you vociferously are the rudest on the entire thread.

PinkTonic · 06/07/2026 15:41

You were asking about suitability. The brown dress is dressier than the yellow one. The first thing I noticed about the yellow dress is that it doesn’t fit and lie well even on the model. The ASOS one is horrible and doesn’t fit the model properly. If you have that boob thing going on like the AI picture you need a properly fitted strapless bra, and since you seem to like halter neck and strappy styles this would be a good investment as the right underwear makes a massive difference to how clothes look.

About a halterneck dress as a size 18

I read the comment last night OP. It was hurtful. I’m also an 18. Try not 5o take it to heart.

Remember they were also stating that the model didn’t look good…..she’s a model I’m sure she looks great.

CookieDough24 · 06/07/2026 15:44

TheBlueKoala · 06/07/2026 15:22

The model is def NOT overweight. She's completely normal. @isaidmaybeyoure I think people are talking about the picture of you in the polkadot dress. So yes, you are overweight but you know that. The model is not.

Anyway when you started to talk about showing flesh I was worried that it would be indecent. That dress is not indecent at all and it's perfect for someone with curves. I couldn't wear it because I'm close to flat. We all got body types that goes better with certain dressing styles. You will look great in that dress- ignore the haters.

Are you talking about the model in the asos dress?

OneNewEagle · 06/07/2026 15:51

OP ive just read this thread now it’s awful. Ask for it to be deleted. And don’t take the comments to heart.

to the mean comments I’m also an 18. I know I’m bigger than average. I know people look or think stuff. But it’s not polite to say nasty things.

Do you not think I know I’m bigger than I sent to be. In my case I’m disabled there’s zero chance of losing the weight around my tummy as I can’t walk it off of me as much as I wished I could as well as enjoying s lovely walk or hike.

I’ve tried losing weight many times. Last time I lost a stone then got stuck on that weight and lost no more for six months. I’ve put that back on since as I’ve been poorly.

OneNewEagle · 06/07/2026 15:55

For everyone getting confused. The original thread is in style and beauty. This is the beautiful young model that people decided to comment on….before even knowing the op’s dress size. No one has any right to be rude about another woman’s looks.

OneNewEagle · 06/07/2026 15:58

One of the nasty comments about the model from the other thread

I think it looks awful on her, the dress doesn’t suit her. She is too large of arse and belly for that style of dress to look its best imo. She’d look better in other things, less tank like. Opinions may vary. Wear what you like of course but you asked for opinions.

OneNewEagle · 06/07/2026 15:59

And this was another comment about the op’s dress size

Now I’ve seen you’re a size 18, dress 1 would also be unsuitable. Too much flesh on show.

I think the consensus was that this dress is not nice. The size of the model doesn’t help but I don’t think it would be nice even on someone slim.

OneNewEagle · 06/07/2026 16:00

So not comments I’d expect to see in the style and beauty section. And I hope the poor model never reads them. It’s usually a very supportive board.
