AIBU after being reported for apparently targeting a member of staff

OK no one is going to believe this to be true but I need to share it. I was spoken to today by my line manager as I've been reported in our 'call it out' policy. I made a member of staff feel targeted and picked on.
I bet you won't be able to guess what I did that made them feel so bad.
It's so crackers I actually thought my manager was joking.
Anyone want to guess?

It sounds like you did take sides in the argument. If you are older perhaps they see you as having more power in the organisation. It's obviously ridiculous of them to report you but I can see how it might have felt to them that you were dismissive of one person's view and supportive of the other.

@Owly11 how should this have been handled then? Are we not allowed to have views or take sides on entirely candy floss irrelevant things at work? I would swerve Middle East politics, tread carefully on feminism and sex matters, but Taylor Swift?!!! How do we know what is ok to have a view on, and what isn’t? What if someone holds strong views on UPFs and M&S new simplified food range- can we talk about that?

A PP also said keep strong opinions to yourself. About Taylor Swift?!!!! Is this how adults start the horrific slope to actually thinking reform may have a point about some things?! 🤯😱🤢

Lol this is the issue with people who develop parasocial relationships with celebrities. They can’t seem to accept that Michael Ball isn’t their husband or Taylor Swift isn’t their bestie and therefore there is nothing to be personally insulted by. So strange!

Parasocial is what came to my mind. A lot of singers and groups now cultivate a too personal relationship with their fans which confuses the fans’ boundaries. I think especially this fairly modern phenomena of having fandom names. Though what would Michael’s Ball’s fandom be called 🤔

I've heard of Swifties and Cumberbitches.

It can get wearing when people laugh at opinions they don't agree with rather than just disagreeing. You said she felt mocked. Your responses on this thread are quite mocking, so she's probably fed up with feeling mocked. People don't usually complain about a single incident

Girl? She is nearly 40, isn’t she!?

I can’t imagine being this obsessed with someone you don’t know.

She’s just a girl (36) standing in front of a boy (36) asking him to love her.

Oh wait, that was a movie not T&T at the altar 🤦‍♀️

I can see why it’s necessary for some people to only work from home.

The same people who don’t open the door if it rings.

But what to call Michael’s fans? The Ballsacs perhaps.

I follow a lot of people on Instagram because they have nice houses or make nice craft stuff or whatever, the number of really very very ordinary people who say ‘my fans’ or ‘my followers’ is astounding. I mean, yes, they are ‘your followers’ but it’s said in a way that really means ‘my admirers who hang on my every word because I’m incredible’ and it is so very unhealthy for all of them.

And then you have the other type who are not like that and they just do videos or photos or whatever.

But ‘I promised you a video’, ‘I have not been honest with you and I’m so sorry about that’, ‘here’s the update you’ve all been waiting for’, ‘I’ve had so many messages from you all’, just why?

AgingLikeGazpacho · 06/07/2026 14:55

Very much enjoyed this thread. I'm always flabbergasted by how seriously some people take themselves - no introspection, just straight to the nuclear option 😆

I'm glad I don't work with anyone like this, it would make work a lot more boring having to keep opinions as bland as possible. When did work have to become so joyless?

Well she has as I've never had a concern before. I also wasn't mocking her at all

Money.

Yes, it’s not an accident Taylor has a huge, devoted following and a billion in the bank. She has cultivated a particularly loyal following by interacting directly with them. It’s seems the norm now. No one got all hurty feelings if you didn’t like Madonna (no fandom name) and certainly no warm and fuzzy relationship with her fans 😁

Vintageshirtsearch · 06/07/2026 15:16

Of course she hasn't. She's just a girl who accidentally wandered on stage and accidentally started singing.

I completely agree. The “fandoms” nowadays are absolutely wild.

A big one that comes to mind is the 1D fandom. I will often see Liam Paynes girlfriend at his time of death come up on socials and a quick look at the hateful comments she gets flooded with on every post tells me people are far too over-invested to such an extent they feel it’s their place to speak on behalf of a dead man they have literally never met.

Very bloody odd behaviour.

NoodleHorses · 06/07/2026 15:23

How did today go, in the office?
I ask because a team member said she was going to report me for upsetting her by saying ‘bread and butter’ and she was offended and I was ‘anti-vegan’.
I am hoping that common sense prevailed in your workplace.

It is odd. Maybe the should try and concentrate on their own life instead of someone elses they have never met and don’t know.

If they did they might even cope with normal smalltalk in the lunch room without feeling offended, and it not adding misery to their mental health problems. Win win for everyone.

IFancyABaconSarnie · 06/07/2026 15:26

A 30 year old woman reported that to a ‘Call it out Policy’ ?
Christ, people are weird.
Your line manager needs to call out your Swifty colleagues childishness.

I would ask for all communication about this absurd matter to be put in writing and say you will only respond to written communication. That she help focus your manager's mind on the sheer stupidity of pandering to this and also, it would make for a riveting employment tribunal.

But what’s next?

OP ’I don’t like coffee, I prefer tea’

Other office lady ‘but that’s offensive to all the people who have dedicated their lives to developing flavourful coffee beans and grading them as strong or not strong, you are saying they have wasted their lives in their pursuit of excellence’

😵‍💫

What is next is probably a roll back to attitudes of the 90"s, many people are done with Woke World, organisations just can"t enforce the dafter stuff any more, 80"s attitudes won"t come back, still too racist/homophobic etc. then, 1990"s was a more sensible balance of a more open accepting society and the grounded common sense and emotional resilience of previous decades, growing up Woke just isn"t going to prepare one for life going forward I"m afraid.

Willsmer · 06/07/2026 15:42

Well they need to grow up.

This is along those line and this happened to me. Many years ago I had an ITT taking over one of my classes. Unfortunately they thought they were God's Gift to teaching and would not heed advice. One lesson they asked for feedback and I said that it would be a good idea to have a lesson plan for the lesson and take their coat and scarf off. The ITT then complained to the Mentor as I was being too negative and I replied there was a lot to be negative about.

I thought the point was that everyone’s entitled to their opinions?
