AIBU to hammer on the walls when neighbours are noisy?

I have neighbours who think nothing of putting on a washing load at midnight, and generally behaving utterly selfishly with regards to noise.

I have asked politely if they could be mindful. Their response was to let me know when they are going to do noisy activities, as though that makes it ok.

AIBU to take to hammering on the walls each and every time they annoy me? I have been doing this for a few days now.

The first few times, they knocked on my door to say that they were disturbed by my hammering to which I replied that they had disturbed me with their noise so I decided to do my own diy to co-ordinate with their noise.

This afternoon, they were playing loud music and so I started hammering. They knocked on my door but I ignored them.

AIBU?

Your opinion is wrong

OK.

Yep. I don’t care if it’s petty and tit for tat. I’ll give as good as I get

Then why ask what we think if you’ve made up your mind?

pambeesleyhalpert · 04/07/2026 21:39

I think that’s quite mean. Electricity is often way cheaper at midnight. It’s not like they’re playing music/ having parties.

Well at least you acknowledge it I guess.

aliceyyyy2654 · 04/07/2026 21:40

I had a neighbour in one of my uni houses who would get her hoover and slam it into her walls whenever we had a house party (of 5 people may I add) and all it did was make us turn the music up 😁 quite mean but we were 19 quite a long time ago. I’m sure she had years and years of uni students next door to deal with after.

JLou08 · 04/07/2026 21:41

Hammering on the walls is quite an aggressive response.
Music on a Saturday afternoon is not something to get worked up over, it's a reasonable time.

@PenelopeJoanSterling

I’m hammering on a wall, not annexing Poland.

I’m not fine with it. That’s why I am hammering on the walls when they make incessant noise. The point is that it makes me feel better instead of meekly accepting their noise after repeated attempts at communication. What is difficult to understand?

When you say hammering on the walls, do you mean you’re using an actual hammer 🔨?
My concern with me using a hammer is that I could be Infact damaging my home!
My neighbours are ignorant, we don’t get along and I’m sure it’s all down to jealousy on their part

I had neighbour that made loads of drunken noise even though they had kids. I worked shifts, so sleep was precious. After one night of noisy drunken twattishness I had enough. I got up early, put my booming music on and left for work with it playing. Never heard I peep from them again 😂

IAMFLUFF · 04/07/2026 22:00

OP you are absolutely right. I had a neighbour that made the most ridiculous noise. In the summer if she knew I was sat having dinner on the patio she’d start breaking up her patio slabs to make crazy paving. Hammering away for hours on end. Banged the walls at all hours with her hoover and had TV on so loud as the old bat was deaf as a post. No consideration whatsoever. I’d retaliate by putting my Bose sound system on when I went out day or night. Never heard her washing machine tho. Just give as good as you get, but don’t bang the walls just stick the music on when you go out or away for a week.

Nearly50omg · 04/07/2026 22:02

Senso · 04/07/2026 20:04

Yes. It shakes the walls and floor

Ask them to balance the machine with the adjustable feet or get a rubber mat to put it on to stop it vibrating through your house! Invite them in when it’s happening so they dan hear how bad it is

Girlwithavibe · 04/07/2026 22:05

It's all tit for tat and quiet silly !
U won't solve anything they know they make noise their solution is to pre warn u (because they can't stop living )
And your response is banging on the walls of course it's going to annoy them !
This won't end well !
If.its that bad make a report to noise environment and see if that helps

Or even check that the drum screw was taken off because sometimes not realising that it's still on can make that most noiseist machine on the planet !

Any1ForTennis · 04/07/2026 22:07

They aren't going to change, hammering on the wall is probably giving them a good laugh.

Can i suggest playing babyshark on repeat at the highest volume and take yourself off out for the day.

Or, buy a detached house in the country.

yes. This is my version of that!

I mean there’s a difference between a washing machine going and you actively behaving aggressively with a hammer. You’ll probably find they make noise complaints against you, which will be valid because, you know, you’re hammering walls! I appreciate that you’ve tried to speak to them but are you expecting them not to use the washing machine at all? I’m not sure what you’re expecting them to do. It’s unreasonable to expect them not to wash their clothes and bedding etc. It’s normal household noise. Music in the afternoon is also reasonable noise. I suspect hammering on purpose is unreasonable noise and so it’s going to be you that’s in the wrong here, not them.

Just go and have a conversation with them, ffs.

They won't know what's pissing you off unless you do.

She already has. Did you even read the op? 🙄
