AIBU to feel helpless about a large asylum camp in our village?

putupwhatever · 29/06/2026 16:15

My village has been chosen for a 1500 open asylum camp for single men. It will be an open camp (as the men haven't done anything wrong so aren't detained.)

The thing is the village only has 700 people and it is pretty isolated. it's about 10 miles to the nearest city and you can walk to another small village. There is a playpark, a pub and a primary school.

It has to go through planning, but the government have changed the planning laws so that they grant themselves planning and you can't see it as it is deemed sensitive. So they will just grant themselves planning and you can't oppose it without a judicial review--by which time it will probably be already open.

They want to reduce the number of people in hotels. But am AIBU to think that this puts the burden of sorting these issues out on one tiny community? Feels like we are collateral damage to be honest. The community will be outnumbered 2 to 1 and it feels too much. There is nothing for them to do or places to go. Also the fact that it is all single men put in one massive place with no money or means or anything to do is going to lead to problems

Apparently the camps cost £10 less a night than the hotels. But they don't count the set up costs which are astronomical (the one in Essex was £47 million to set up). So it seems like it's not not even cheaper than the problem it is trying to solve but much more expensive.

AIBU to feel a bit helpless? It seems so unfair but there is nothing I can do. We wouldn't be able to move from the village anyway as no one would buy a house here.

Wait? Really?????

Not sure about the posters who are admonishing anyone who thinks it’s not ok. Perhaps they’d be fine with their DDs too but only one has said it’s ok afai noticed anyway.

I doubt when all the sums are done that it will be the cheapest option. It is the popular option though, cos it’s not “5* hotels” innit.

"Innit"??

Yup.
We also stopped the sacrifice of new-born babies to the goddess Kali in India.
Are you saying that was bad ?!

We also stopped the sacrifice of new-born babies to the goddess Kali in India.

No, that’s a proven myth.

Maybe just stick to the railways.

How many people from Sudan would you want to take in?

Although the system favours men, so how many men?

Edited

Id also like to know what I've or most other UK citizens have got to do with Sudan in the 1800s!
Unless your family was one who benefited it's really nothing to do with most of us whose ancestors were also suffering and being subjugated.

No one has said this.

It’s what your comments imply.

13 rapes by Afghan men are one too many but trying to represent them as worse than 140,000 rapes by white men is misleading.

Edited

Where did you obtain the 2024 figure? Sky News reported that 77 Afghans were convicted of sexual offences in England and Wales from 2021 to 2023. Those statistics were self-reported and do not include perpetrators of unknown nationality.

@nomas is waiting for someone to quote a crime or statistic so they can offer a similar crime perpetrated by a white British male.

AHA! THEY DO IT TO!!

We went all over the globe for centuries, changing people's way of life, wreaking havoc and destruction while raping and enslaving people and stealing their gold, diamonds, resources and wealth. In Australia we threw in some genocide for good measure.

We told them that they were part of the British empire and made them learn English. Is it any wonder that sanctuary seekers decide to come to England? We forcibly invaded them, told them they were British and taught them our language after all.

The Romans invaded us, murdered most of the native Britains, stole our gold and tin.

The Vikings raped and pillage their way down the East Coast of England and terrorised the early Christian inhabitants there.

From the 9th Century for about 200 years that area was under 'Danelaw.'
So let's get our own back and invade Denmark !

GaIadriel · 29/06/2026 22:49

It's not so much that, as a woman, you get more hassle in Islamic countries it's just a different flavour of hassle.

Like 'twenty lashes for being seen out the house without a chaperone' type of hassle or mob rape kind of hassle?

I'm sure the women in Afghanistan would agree with you.

nomas · 29/06/2026 22:33

Again, no one is importing men.

Why don’t you do something and go to Strasbourg and ask them to repeal the ECHR instead?

If men are coming in via boats are they not imports?

Lavender14 · 29/06/2026 22:50

putupwhatever · 29/06/2026 16:32

It's not about villainising the asylum seekers. I'm a realistthere will be good people and bad people in the cohort. When you put a huge amount of destitute young men together there are problemsit attracts a lot of exploitation (sexual, drugs, gangs etc.). We know this from the police commissioner and the information they have been given. Even if it was say 100 people it would a massive % of the community, but at 200% of the community it will be unworkable. This isn't to do with where the asylum seekers are from or casting aspersions on their individual charactersits about groups and numbers. The other thing is these people won't stay in the village even if they are granted refugee statusthey are by nature transient and then moved on so it's not even like you could build relationships

The issue with this though is that you are forgetting that they are more likely to be exploited than they are to exploit anyone else. They are by nature transient? What a nonsense, the reason why asylum seekers often find it hard to embed into a community is because so many people adopt the 'not in my back yard' mentality. If you aren't prepared to get to know them and you're writing them off without giving them a chance then you are a large part of the reason why integration isn't working. (You meant in the collective sense not you personally op).

BoredZelda · 29/06/2026 18:25

They have people chucking rocks and setting fires to the places they live. Would that make you want to integrate?

Read any thread on here about men to see just how women are treated by British men.

I'm not discounting the appalling attitudes and treatment of women by British, Western, or any men.. but they do not follow a book that specifies that women are inferiors, to do with as they please.

Yes, this. People seeking asylum should be allowed to work. I'm sure most people in this situation want to.

And where are you going to magic up these mythical jobs? A million NEETS can't find work, what hope does an asylum seeker have?

You know there are churches in the UK where women are not allowed to speak to the church collective/ hold positions of authority and where abused women are told to humble themselves and defer to men as the spiritual head right? Any religion can be manipulated for nefarious purposes. So why only suspicious of one. Also you know many asylum seekers are Christian right?

Look at the countries ranked. Not all countries are the same with how they treat women. Nordic countries clearly show that VAWG per capita wise is predominantly by foreigners.

The UK gave £146 million in foreign aid to Sudan in the year 26/27. They are corrupt and beyond help but still the money pours in.

But not all Sudanese are corrupt. I went to school with Sudanese siblings who were refugees. They were popular at parties and had friends from lots of races/nationalities. They had happy productive lives before we lost touch.

Mo Farah is a refugee from Somalia.

There are often very complex reasons why local people are NEET. Anyone who is disabled and unable to work for example falls into the category of NEET.
