AIBU to feel helpless about a large asylum camp in our village?

My village has been chosen for a 1500 open asylum camp for single men. It will be an open camp (as the men haven't done anything wrong so aren't detained.)

The thing is the village only has 700 people and it is pretty isolated. it's about 10 miles to the nearest city and you can walk to another small village. There is a playpark, a pub and a primary school.

It has to go through planning, but the government have changed the planning laws so that they grant themselves planning and you can't see it as it is deemed sensitive. So they will just grant themselves planning and you can't oppose it without a judicial review--by which time it will probably be already open.

They want to reduce the number of people in hotels. But am AIBU to think that this puts the burden of sorting these issues out on one tiny community? Feels like we are collateral damage to be honest. The community will be outnumbered 2 to 1 and it feels too much. There is nothing for them to do or places to go. Also the fact that it is all single men put in one massive place with no money or means or anything to do is going to lead to problems

Apparently the camps cost £10 less a night than the hotels. But they don't count the set up costs which are astronomical (the one in Essex was £47 million to set up). So it seems like it's not not even cheaper than the problem it is trying to solve but much more expensive.

AIBU to feel a bit helpless? It seems so unfair but there is nothing I can do. We wouldn't be able to move from the village anyway as no one would buy a house here.

No one has said that.

Then your post is irrelevant.

No one has said that.

Once again, they don’t need to. British men are enough of a threat to women, without allowing more men into the country from areas of the world where women are treated as disposable chattels and men can marry children.

I don't care. What did a British citizen living today do anything to deserve having their society ruined?

UK manufactured arms and armoured vehicles are in use by the side committing atrocities in Sudan now. Not in the past. Now.

Oh wow, i must tell dh to stop doing that then. He absolutely needs to give up arms trading and grow geraniums instead.

Thought not

Okay and? How is that the fault of the average citizen in the UK?

I really feel for you OP. I have a daughter and there is no way I’d be comfortable with this.

Apart from one poster no one has said they’d be ok for it for their dd either.

daisybanks · 29/06/2026 22:27

Exactly.

Why are we being invaded because of something our ancestors did?

If you use that logic we should all invade Italy and Scandinavia because of what the Romans and the Vikings did to us !

Yes, most nations were pretty awful in the past, we can’t keep self flagellating. It was unpleasant for the poor people living in the UK as they were exploited

Again, no one is importing men.

Why don’t you do something and go to Strasbourg and ask them to repeal the ECHR instead?

SkaterGrrrrl · 29/06/2026 22:33

We went all over the globe for centuries, changing people's way of life, wreaking havoc and destruction while raping and enslaving people and stealing their gold, diamonds, resources and wealth. In Australia we threw in some genocide for good measure.

We told them that they were part of the British empire and made them learn English. Is it any wonder that sanctuary seekers decide to come to England? We forcibly invaded them, told them they were British and taught them our language after all.

Which is down to the policies of successive governments, not the citizens of the UK. Do you see migrant camps/hotels in ‘naice’ areas where government policy makers live ? Of course you don’t. Grow up.

Easy way to shut down a discussion… call them racists and being the tolerant little pussies we Brits are…..job done! What are we calling it now? Suicidal empathy? Change needs to happen as all of Europe now realises but how?

Most likely right wing parties will get in and start clamping down. It might be at the expense of many other things, and who knows we might even end up with an enforcement agency not too far from ICE in the US one day. Either way I can't see the problem going away on its own or people becoming less disenfranchised.

Changing people's way of life like stopping them burning widows alive? And nothing says "you're British" like cost-Colonial independence.

Generally though - I don't actually care. I don't want things made worse in the UK in the here and now, and I am not going to be guilted.

Did you highlight the person upthread who suggested someone burn down the asylum seeker camp?

Or the person who suggested taking all the asylum seekers to sea and drowning them?

They burnt down prospective migrant camps in Germany in Saxony.

Sudan has received £146 million for the year 2026/27 from the UK. Is it the UK’s fault that they can’t use it properly and are corrupt?

UK sold arms to UAE.
What UAE did with them afterwards isn't UK's responsibility.

If I lived in a village, I wouldn't particularly want a large group of ANY men in a hostel if the size of the hostel group exceeded the village population itself.

However, if it was a choice between 1,500 asylum seekers or 1,500 of your average TR supporter in the hostel, give me the asylum seekers any day of the week! If a load of the type of men who go in TR marches moved in, that's when I would feel the need to leave if I could. Asylum seekers don't bother me particularly. I've travelled in Pakistan solo, as well as India, Bangladesh and Iran. My husband's family were asylum seekers from Iran. It's not so much that, as a woman, you get more hassle in Islamic countries it's just a different flavour of hassle. I found men in more Islamic countries, by and large, just didn't know how to approach me. They might stare more, sure. But just stare back. The worst places for hassle were maybe Morocco or Egypt because the culture there is more liberal. The worst I've had from men - which I won't get into here - is white men when I was at university. University campuses are the places where you should be most worried about your daughters. Also, there was a member of my own family, I'm ashamed to say. Overall, I think all this divisive panic about asylum seekers being more likely to be rapists is a disgrace. More girls and women are sexually abused by their own fathers or other male relatives than asylum seekers. This is so obvious it shouldn't even need saying.

Yup.
We also stopped the sacrifice of new-born babies to the goddess Kali in India.
Are you saying that was bad ?!

Are you for real? Read a history book.

"British imperialism and exploitation in Sudan dates back to the mid-1800s, intensified into 56 years of colonial rule and led to civil war and the deaths of hundreds of thousands, as tensions created by British imposition of arbitrary borders drove a legacy of exploitation and conflict that left Sudan impoverished and war-torn."

They are here because we were there.

The UK gave £146 million in foreign aid to Sudan in the year 26/27. They are corrupt and beyond help but still the money pours in.

We did exactly what every other civilisation has done. We just did it more effectively. Well, maybe not quite as effectively as the Romans tbf. And there's a reason why people in South America have names like Jesus and Pablo.

Nowadays there's almost 4x as many slaves in the world as were trafficked across the entire 300-400 years of the transatlantic slave trade. The only majority white country in the top ten worst offenders is Russia in 10th place. So arguably there are no western countries amongst the worst offenders.

This isn't a fallout from our colonialism. These countries just never stopped slavery.
