AIBU to feel helpless about a large asylum camp in our village?

1001 replies

putupwhatever · 29/06/2026 16:15

My village has been chosen for a 1500 open asylum camp for single men. It will be an open camp (as the men haven't done anything wrong so aren't detained.)

The thing is the village only has 700 people and it is pretty isolated. it's about 10 miles to the nearest city and you can walk to another small village. There is a playpark, a pub and a primary school.

It has to go through planning, but the government have changed the planning laws so that they grant themselves planning and you can't see it as it is deemed sensitive. So they will just grant themselves planning and you can't oppose it without a judicial review--by which time it will probably be already open.

They want to reduce the number of people in hotels. But am AIBU to think that this puts the burden of sorting these issues out on one tiny community? Feels like we are collateral damage to be honest. The community will be outnumbered 2 to 1 and it feels too much. There is nothing for them to do or places to go. Also the fact that it is all single men put in one massive place with no money or means or anything to do is going to lead to problems

Apparently the camps cost £10 less a night than the hotels. But they don't count the set up costs which are astronomical (the one in Essex was £47 million to set up). So it seems like it's not not even cheaper than the problem it is trying to solve but much more expensive.

AIBU to feel a bit helpless? It seems so unfair but there is nothing I can do. We wouldn't be able to move from the village anyway as no one would buy a house here.

Right so we agree, we can say its "just the ones we dont like".

Yep so if you're just against the specific cultures you don't like, but you're ok with others like Jews, then you're not against multiculturalism in general. Which is what I said

I honestly agree with Churchill that "the best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter".

The majority of rapes here are committed by white British men simply because they're the majority demographic. When Sky News fact checked Farage's claims about Afghan men they found that they were 'only' 3x more likely to be convicted of a sexual offence than British men.

And whilst we hear a lot about the 'two women a week' there are countries where ten women are murdered every day. Irrespective of the current stats it doesn't make sense to bring in thousands of unvetted men from countries with terrible human rights abuses of women.

This isn't conjecture. 1200 women were sexually assaulted in one night on the very year that Merkel opened the floodgates.

Funnily enough, Im no more likely to be attacked than if I was walking alone in some village or in the countryside.

Said no woman ever in India/Egypt/Eritrea.

Edited

And the German stats show Afghan men as 16x more likely to rape compared to the German baseline. Maghreb and sub Saharan Africa both 11x.

Right so we agree, we can say its "just the ones we dont like".

It’s the ones who don’t integrate or assimilate and choose not to live by western values. Not hard to understand.

'Hence, the shutting down of debate'

What do you mean by this?

Apart from one comment, I haven't seen any Islamophobic comments. People aren't going to stop voicing their opinions for fear of being called racist. Not anymore.

EasternStandard · 29/06/2026 21:25

lightseeker · 29/06/2026 21:23

Of course there are men from 'countries with Sharia law' who come here for tourism or in business. I'm in Kensington / Knightsbridge and there are a lot of Saudis. They own a huge proportion of housing around here. There is a visible Middle Eastern community. It's great actually - they tend to go to cake shops and sit out in the evenings as families, rather than go to pubs and get drunk. I probably feel safer amid them than your average Nigel.

I think some people confuse government regimes with individual human nature. Most of the people scared of 'these men' don't know any Muslim men and have never been to 'those countries.'

Stop being fooled by TR and Farage's divisive and incendiary rhetoric and turn your attention instead to the porn or other 'manosphere' content your sons and other men in your families are no doubt consuming. THAT is what you need to be scared about.

If you were in the op’s position and had the 1500 male accommodation nearby would you let a dd walk home from school by herself?

Hypothetically, at the right age to walk home.

I don't think most British Jews are a separate culture particularly.

Some people are pragmatic in that if you've signed up to take in asylum seekers, you have to put them somewhere, and that every county should bear its share.

That doesn't mean people are pro-open borders. Some people are welcoming the sharp fall in immigration numbers. Some are warning that fewer immigrants mean a smaller workforce and a slower economy. People are just trying to navigate a complex situation.

But surely a smaller workforce is what we need to be aiming for. AI is on the march, and taking jobs with it. Unemployment is going to drastically rise within the coming decades. It just doesn’t make sense people bleating on about needing more incomers to fill jobs, when we know that AI is going to have a drastic effect on employment.

The powers that be.
The Government.

The government can't force cultural change of the scale that would be necessary. 50% of British born Muslims still think homosexuality should be illegal. And of course there seems to be no shortage of do gooders desperate to welcome the men fleeing the war in Egypt.

Being Jewish is very much a culture with a rich history and many traditions, what an incredibly ignorant thing to say. Do you know many non Jewish Brits who speak Yiddish?

There were 13 rapes by Afghan men in 2024 in the UK. Whilst even one rape is too many and I would welcome action by the government to tackle this, I think your post could be seen as misleading, as actually 10s of 000s of rapes are committed by white men.

GaIadriel · 29/06/2026 21:28

Not demonising British Muslims btw because I work with plenty of decent ones. It's just clear that cultural beliefs take a long time to change. British Muslims think gay people should be locked up. Middle Eastern Muslims throw them off buildings.

For once, it hasn't been, despite the usual attempts. That should tell you that people aren't racist because they are sick of seeing unprecedented levels of unvetted men being a potential danger. They aren't far right or Islamophobic.

All the people proposing "just offer language classes": please specify your experience working with refugee integration programmes. Describe the level of resources it took for you to help your students, and what level they managed to reach in the time you spent with them?

@putupwhatever Yanbu. 1500 men- the majority from countries with no existing women's right. If I had daughters I would move far, far away...

Who would buy a property there now, knowing that roughly 1,500 young men will be moving into a small village of 700 people? They will be free to come and go during the day, but to do what? It’s outrageous.

We can’t keep taking so many young men like this, who clearly have no useful and in demand skills, or they would have come on proper visas. This is just going to increase support for Reform, I should think, unless the villagers can get the decision reversed like before.

With the greatest respect and while I agree with you the horrific rape stats are not the main issue here.

Why the fuck are we accepting economic migrants who have travelled through multiple safe countries at all???

The fact that a proportion are sex criminals makes it worse but it's not the primary issue.

Anyone could argue that people try and shut them down. People have tried to shut me down for mentioning Wayne Couzens.
