AIBU to think my neighbour’s cat care problem is not mine?

Thepartwhereidrun · 26/06/2026 07:35

My neighbour stopped my son on his way out last night to ask if he would look after her cat when she is away from tomorrow for 2 weeks, going in twice a day. He said sorry but he couldn’t.

I didn’t know she had spoken to him until she knocked our door and told us. Her cat sitter has let her down last minute and now she won’t be able to go on holiday unless she can find someone else. Nightmare for her, but her cat sitter is ill so it can’t be helped. I said I can’t help her but I text our dog sitter, who also does cat sitting to ask if she had availability and said I’d get back to her if she could do it.

She asked if I would also ask my son again, which I did when he got home, but he doesn’t want to do it. He has just finished his A levels and wants to be free to come and go as he pleases which is understandable. I said that if he has said no then that means he can’t.

Our dog sitter text me back to say she didn’t have any availability for the first week but could do the second week. I text my neighbour to let her know and to give her sitters contact details. She has just text back ‘no good, what am I meant to do for the first week?’

I haven’t replied as although I get she is probably feeling desperate, how the fuck is her cat my problem?

I know you like to point out when people haven’t read what you wrote, so…….

If you read my comment accurately you will know I asked when you were away, someone said ‘why the fuck does that matter’ so I was answering them as to why it mattered.

You also wrote that you have said ‘in quite a few posts’ that you were away. I know. I read them. My question was when are you away? I am obviously referring to the second week, because you were already back from your first weeks trip when I asked. You mentioned one time only that your second trip is from Tuesday morning until Thursday pm. You said that on the 26th June at 3.18pm. I apologised for missing one comment posted over a week ago on a thread that is almost at 1000 posts.

Yes OP, I agree with you. It IS really really annoying when people don’t read accurately.

Silverbirchleaf · 04/07/2026 16:15

@Thepartwhereidrun

I know he’s not your cat, but I’m still waiting for the cat tax, or he doesn’t exist. Where’s the picture?!!

ImTheTroubleAhead · 04/07/2026 16:32

I have read your updates OP. The poor neighbours, carers and cat. 😢

The cheeky fuckers neighbour would be getting a bollocking from me when she’s back for lying to the neighbours and for leaving the cat in the way she did. She is a nasty piece of work.

PotatoLove · 04/07/2026 16:40

Thank you again OP, for your continuous kindness to the kitty 😺

Why are you carrying this on? OP has taken enough crap on the thread. She has apologised if she got your post wrong, although I’m inclined to agree with what she first thought, that you seemed to be questioning why she couldn’t do more, yet you’re continuing.

OP said exact dates when she is and you missed it, okay, but she also mentioned in other posts being away for a few days each week. Presumably you saw those. So why were you asking if you weren’t thinking she could look after the cat? The carers are calling him for food and it seems he has eaten all but a couple of meals. OP can’t do any more than she is, so what do you expect her to do by asking when she is away?

The same OP that's looked after the cheeky cow's cat as best she can?

Bridgertonisbest · 04/07/2026 17:56

Honestly, I can't believe she wants one of you to put your life on hold for her fucking cat for thirty quid!

Your son is going camping, he doesn't know which dates yet but will be going camping for a few days over the next couple of weeks. £30 or the new enhanced rate of £50 isn't enough recompense for him to cancel his plans.

I know that. I read all the posts from the OP and everyone else.

When people don’t read the thread and post as if there have been no further developments since the OP I won’t say anything, OP can tell them. Or you can?

Or when people misread the OPs posts, I won’t correct them. So yeah. That OP, who has ‘looked after the cheeky cow’s cat as best as she can’.

I regret helping her correct people who didn’t bother to read her posts. Is that okay with you?

I know, right? Thirty quid! It’s £1 per visit. Anyway, I’m sure it’ll all work out fine

OP has apologised and you’re being arsey. She couldn’t look after the cat so why were you asking her when she was away anyway? Do you think she can do more than she is?

I have supported OP and somehow I’m getting a pile on.

OP apologised but she still said she had ‘mentioned being away in quite a few posts’. I knew that. I read them. All my posts were supportive until the last few where I got irritated because people haven’t read my posts properly.

Do you think I have been more arsey than OP has been in her 50 replies to people who haven’t read her posts properly?

In what way have I not been supportive?

mbosnz · 04/07/2026 18:50

Do you think maybe you should make like Elsa, and Let it Go?

someladdersandsnakes · 04/07/2026 18:50

I would just do it, or tell my son he has to do it. Whatever happened to people helping their neighbours out. Country's going to the dogs I tell ya.

AllMyFriends · 05/07/2026 12:26

I’ve just read the full thread. Your neighbour is vile. I feel so sorry for the cat.
You and the elderly neighbours/carers are doing your best for the cat but I think you should all pay the cheeky neighbour a visit together when she’s back to tell her exactly how disgustingly she has behaved. I would be so angry in your position.

AllMyFriends · 05/07/2026 12:42

If you find time, you could have a chat with the RSPCA and see if there is anything they would do. Although the cat has food and shelter, explain that your neighbour left the cat with 2 elderly people who she knew couldn’t realistically provide enough care for the cat and see what they say. I doubt they would take the cat from her under these circumstances, but they may visit her, which may be enough to ensure she at least doesn’t do anything like this again.

Thepartwhereidrun · 05/07/2026 13:42

I ended up staying at a friends house last night as I had a few too many glasses of wine. 🥴 No sign of the cat today so far so hopefully he is with the elderly neighbours.

I’m not sure if a report is worth the time , still thinking on that, but I will definitely be speaking to my neighbour when she is back.

I see you couldn't be arsed to read all the OP'S comments, which explain very clearly why this was impossible.

Country's going to the dogs with people voicing an opinion on a 30+ page thread without ascertaining the facts, I tell ya...

Hopefully the cat is lolling in the shade with a full stomach. The cats in my street are loving sleeping in the shade all day. If the thread fills up before your neighbour gets home, please do update us on a new thread if you want to.
