I got to my early 40s without ever needing to claim but circumstances find me single and paying the lions share of child related outgoings.

I work full time on£31,000 and have found out this year thanks to applying that I get on average about £800 from UC. It has been an absolute life changer and will hopefully be able to afford a modest uk holiday actually during the summer holidays and pay the school back some debt im in for after school care.

So many benefits bashing threads so I just wanted to present another side that as a cash strapped mum of two who works full time, UC is making a positive difference to our life. I didn't even think id qualify!

Oh but you are bashing her.

No she's not. @BlueFahrenheit is exercising her right to evaluate the situation, the personal details of which the OP has revealed. She hasn't got personal.

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 21/06/2026 10:57

I can’t believe the amount of folks that want the CMS to be included in the UC.

so the kids have to suffer cos of feckless, controlling exes cos it’s the kids that do suffer the most.

There needs to be more balance with regards to child maintenance. It shouldn't be disregarded and not go back into the economy.

Yes, dear.

The OP is clearly not cash-strapped.

What don't you understand? 😂

I echo this.

The large proportion of these men makes me heave.

I remember reading an article a few years ago about a man who had so many children, he had their names tattooed on his body.

The thought of entering a relationship with someone like this makes my blood boil.

Think I know who you mean. They are usually as ugly as sin as well.

I found him unsavoury, but apparently the ladies loved him.

He didn't work. The mothers didn't work.

How wonderful!

People are saying it should be reclaimed from the feckless ex's. Why should people get large amounts of UC when many ex's pay regularly and reliably and both parents between them can adequately support the kids ? Why is that taxpayers responsibility to pay when the parents can and it just needs to be enforced that they do so? By all means pay the UC so that kids are not left wanting but reclaim directly from the wages of those that won't. It can't be that hard to enforce.

That's not the point. It affects every tax payer surely? We have a responsibility to make sure that welfare goes to those that most need it.

Absolutely.

All the finances need to be assessed, so claimants receive what they're entitled to.

If I could choose where my money was spent, it wouldn't be going to the OP.

I would want it to be the most vulnerable of children and adults. Those in actual need.

I guess my morals are in the wrong place!

No your morals are not in the wrong place and I think many would agree that getting £800 a month top up when you already have a 31k income plus CM plus child benefit is over generous. When many sick people are surviving on little more than £600 ( plus housing costs ) a month UC with no earnings, or carers looking after adult disabled kids or parents 24/7 on a similar amount, the system has gone very wrong somewhere and we should all be concerned.

And to think, there are many families in a better position than the OP, squeezing money out of the 'system' while others are walking along the fine line of death.

Unethical.

Too busy and happy with my own life I guess to worry how much a single parent gets.

Maybe less people would think about it at all if op didn't start goady threads saying how generous her Uc is ! Most people would be blissfully unaware of the amounts being dished out. Which is why I think this thread was just started to rile people.
