I got to my early 40s without ever needing to claim but circumstances find me single and paying the lions share of child related outgoings.

I work full time on£31,000 and have found out this year thanks to applying that I get on average about £800 from UC. It has been an absolute life changer and will hopefully be able to afford a modest uk holiday actually during the summer holidays and pay the school back some debt im in for after school care.

So many benefits bashing threads so I just wanted to present another side that as a cash strapped mum of two who works full time, UC is making a positive difference to our life. I didn't even think id qualify!

Beautiful to hear, but it's evident that you probably don't pay high taxes.

Too busy and happy with my own life I guess to worry how much a single parent gets.

You’ve made several untrue statements on this thread. Firstly that Social Housing isn’t subsidised. It is, of course, as it quite rightly should be. And now that no one cares how taxes are spent. I think you will find that taxation and its use is the number one issue for the overwhelming majority of voters, from any party.

CoffeeAndCats3 · 21/06/2026 11:48

The real story here is that you have a very responsible and necessary job and yet make a very poor salary. 31k is atrocious for an experienced nurse. You'd be paid double that in America or Australia.

The wage suppression in the UK needs to be stopped.

Not now I don't. I retired on my 60th birthday two years ago. Still pay it though! Just not as much. Though my CT is still the same.

Maybe less people would think about it at all if op didn't start goady threads saying how generous her Uc is ! Most people would be blissfully unaware of the amounts being dished out. Which is why I think this thread was just started to rile people.

Edited

The elephant in the room.

Audacious. Creating a thread about your generous UC and then disappearing.

😂

It isn't in my country. Charging a fair rent is not subsidising. Don't call me a liar btw considering you lied about everyone paying tax and then doubled down when you were challenged.

Social housing is subsidised in the UK. This is a UK forum. Simple. And no, I don’t lie. Not everyone pays income tax. Yes, we all have to pay VAT etc but some people are paying that AFTER already having paid income tax. Some aren’t. So, some people pay more, see??

You replied to a simple statement. "Everyone pays tax". You said they didn't then lied and lied when you got VAT and CT pointed out to you.

Social Housing is NOT subsidised in my country, which is part of the UK for now.

It's no secret that nurses don't receive the pay they are entitled to.

But this is how capitalism works. The system falls apart if no one is willing to do the important things like nursing, caring, cleaning, retail, etc.

Those who are in roles that are essential to the functioning of society deserve a fair standard of living in return, be it through benefits paid for from the taxes of those they are supporting or fairer wages.

And before anyone starts about the wealthy not using the NHS, if it didn't exist to keep the working population healthy, there would be no fancy offices built, no roads to drive your Teslas on, no childcarer to watch your children while you make your fortune, no shops to spend your money in... Whether you use the NHS or not, you benefit from having a healthy workforce.

Coming from one who is 'retired' and stated that many of us don't care about how our taxes are spent.

Perhaps it's a good idea you're no longer in the workforce.

The cost of my rent is the cost of maintaining my house, with a bit extra tacked on to cover the management costs of the social housing provider and to invest in new housing stock.

Social housing is the actual cost of housing; private rents are artificially inflated to benefit LLs at the expense of the taxpayer and the unfortunate people priced out of the housing market.
