To be cheered up by Samuel Corner being sentenced to 7 years in prison?

For once a judge has imposed an adequate punishment for a crime, in this case attacking a policewoman (from behind) with a sledgehammer.
I imagine he and his friends didn't expect that.

I don't see how seven years is adequate for attacking someone with a sledge hammer!?

This. I'm staggered that we're at the point where 7 years feels like a decent stretch for such a violent crime. I want these people off the streets for good. They have no place in society.

@EasternStandard they've been banged up on remand for a while now so they'll have settled in.

What they will have probably been expecting is that all the faux hunger strikes and protests outside the prisons they are held in will work to get them all released. Good news is they are shit out of luck.

Yep.

Prison will be a shock I bet, but nice middle class people should think a bit more about the crimes they’re willing to do.

Nice middle class young people think that prison is something that only happens to the uneducated working class that fall into two groups "victims of an oppressive fascist system" or "far right viscous thugs" depending on their race / why they are in prison.

Samuel may think he is the next Nelson Mandela unjustly imprisoned for his "cause". But my bet is that after 2 or 3 years it will be "Samuel who?" as his friends move on to other causes or grow up and get jobs.

cheezncrackers · Today 09:52

What an appalling case. I hadn't heard of it until this morning, so thank you for publicising it OP. Poor Sgt Evans. I'm so glad that the perpetrators got proper sentences, although she could've been killed Sad

Auroraloves · Today 09:53

Brilliant news. Hope all the people like minded to this man take note

Wouldn’t describe him as nice.

Some fuckwits apparently lay down in front of the prison van yesterday 😂

Honestly I think the charge should have been attempted murder.

Ereshkigalangcleg · Today 10:01

I agree, you don’t hit someone with a seven pound sledgehammer while committing a crime to just bat them off, he definitely could have killed her and he would have known that. ISTR people including here trying to claim it was “justified self defence” 🙄

CornishPorsche · Today 10:04

endofthelinefinally · Today 09:57

Honestly I think the charge should have been attempted murder.

He was originally charged with GBH with intent but cleared of that and convicted of the lesser charge of GBH without intent.

I am willing to bet that when the Police tool the case to CPS, they sought a charge of attempted murder. I certainly would have.

Ereshkigalangcleg · Today 10:04

Not even self defence, defence of his idiotic female friend and fellow criminal who she was trying to restrain, as she is lawfully in a job to do.

Fatmanscoop · Today 10:05

Absolute lunatic. Great to see this example being set.

and shut up with your quoting from peaceful poets

SallySharp · Today 10:08

The Judge gave a full explanation of why the crimes had a terrorist factor so I hope that sticks and is not diluted on appeal.
Many supporters tried to block the prison van taking them away. I believe some were arrested 😂and charged with supporting a terrorist organisation 😂.

noblegiraffe · Today 10:12

The shocking thing about Zack Polanski's post suggesting that the man who bludgeoned a female police officer with a sledgehammer didn't deserve prison is that Zack has previously been criticised in a letter by the Police Federation for ignoring this attack when talking about the case. He is deliberately ignoring the attack on the police, it wasn't an oversight.

Apparently 107 were!

No. But I bet that seven years is feeling pretty real and no amount of stuff going on outside will make it go faster.

treestumped · Today 10:26

This isn't protesting against a genocide, it's blatant thuggery that involves fracturing a woman's spine with a sledgehammer.

I read he got 8 years, 8 months. The longer the better IMO.

He was found guilty of GBH without intent, the max sentence for that is 5 yrs (I assume the other conviction plus terrorism element added on the rest).
The jury found him not guilty of GBH with intent, which could have a longer sentence.

It’s a 7yr 8 month prison sentence, with one year on licence at the end, and no potential early release.

I hope people have registered these comments in response to the sentences:

Green Party Leader Zack Polanski said it was "gut-wrenching to see four young people jailed for direct action against an arms supplier to Israel".
He added that the sentence was a "truly dangerous attack on the right to protest".
Labour MP John McDonnell said the scale of the sentences was "truly shocking".
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce950111xk7o

I'll tell you what's gut-wrenching, you appalling fraud! Your utter failure to condemn violence against a woman who was attacked with a sledgehammer for just doing her job and who will live with the consequences for the rest of her life. How anyone can contemplate voting for the Greens under that idiot is beyond my comprehension. Same goes for the extreme Left faction to which McDonnell belongs (and his chum Corbyn).

Well said 💐💐🌸

Armorlux · Today 10:39

I hope the 6% saying it's unreasonable just mean they think it's an unreasonably short sentence for the crime.

But 7 years is quite a good message to send out to his supporters.

JulietteHasAGun · Today 10:40

Good. I mean I wish it was longer but at least he didn’t get off

BunfightBetty · Today 10:40

He should have got longer, but equally I am pleased it wasn’t a ridiculously short sentence, with the judge burbling about not ruining his life. That he will serve the full term is something. I wonder how he’ll cope in jail amongst the other terrorists.

Polanski and McDonnell show themselves yet again as utterly unfit to hold high office. No surprise there.

I have no doubt that @Ereshkigalangcleg is correct that Polanski is deliberately sending a signal with his remarks. That he believes there are sufficient numbers who’d agree with him to make this is a winning strategy highlights a huge problem in society.

This is from the CPS

The Terrorism Act 2000 defines terrorism, both in and outside of the UK, as the use or threat of one or more of the actions listed below, and where they are designed to influence the government, or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public. The use or threat must also be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.
The specific actions included are:
serious violence against a person;
serious damage to property;
endangering a person's life (other than that of the person committing the action);
creating a serious risk to the health or safety of the public or a section of the public; and
action designed to seriously interfere with or seriously to disrupt an electronic system.
The use or threat of action, as set out above, which involves the use of firearms or explosives is terrorism regardless of whether or not the action is designed to influence the government or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public or a section of the public.
Action includes action outside the United Kingdom.
It is important to note that in order to be convicted of a terrorism offence a person doesn't actually have to commit what could be considered a terrorist attack. Planning, assisting and even collecting information on how to commit terrorist acts are all crimes under British terrorism legislation
