To be cheered up by Samuel Corner being sentenced to 7 years in prison?

For once a judge has imposed an adequate punishment for a crime, in this case attacking a policewoman (from behind) with a sledgehammer.
I imagine he and his friends didn't expect that.

He'll be out in three years.

If you attack a woman with a sledgehammer you should get life.

Sausagenbacon · Today 07:22

I thought he couldn't get parole?

It’s been treated as a terrorist crime so he won’t be eligible for early release. It was a terrible crime and I’m glad he’s finally being sent to prison.

No, because of the terrorism element none of them will be eligible for early release.

NotDarkGothicMama · Today 08:14

I was very pleased to read about it yesterday. Just what that nasty, violent arsehole deserves.

Ereshkigalangcleg · Today 08:15

He should have got longer for that but pleased to hear this.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · Today 08:16

Oh good! I was shocked at the attempts to defend his behaviour. Couldn’t have been more clear cut.

SerenaCat93 · Today 08:17

I don't see how seven years is adequate for attacking someone with a sledge hammer!?

KTheGrey · Today 08:17

Yes - hitting people with a hammer is not peaceful protest, and I am glad that’s been confirmed.

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · Today 08:18

So pleased, but awaiting the angst from his supporters on here

TartanCrow · Today 08:19

I lifted this from the other thread:

‘The offenders will not qualify for early release from prison provisions and the Parole Board will assess their risk to the public when it determines when they can be set free.
All four will also serve an additional one year on a licence in the community at the end of their terms.’

I hope people have registered these comments in response to the sentences:

Green Party Leader Zack Polanski said it was "gut-wrenching to see four young people jailed for direct action against an arms supplier to Israel".
He added that the sentence was a "truly dangerous attack on the right to protest".
Labour MP John McDonnell said the scale of the sentences was "truly shocking".

I'll tell you what's gut-wrenching, you appalling fraud! Your utter failure to condemn violence against a woman who was attacked with a sledgehammer for just doing her job and who will live with the consequences for the rest of her life. How anyone can contemplate voting for the Greens under that idiot is beyond my comprehension. Same goes for the extreme Left faction to which McDonnell belongs (and his chum Corbyn).

EasternStandard · Today 08:21

Good. Polanski’s comments are concerning. Just looked up a photo of the perpetrator.

Ereshkigalangcleg · Today 08:21

I was just coming back to post those comments too. Vile fucker.

nam3c4ang3 · Today 08:21

7 years!?! That’s all?! Where I’m from it would be quite a long longer… but better than nothing I guess.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · Today 08:28

I absolutely despair at the state of politics in the UK at the moment. Where are all the competent, intelligent, decent people with the ability to connect to the populace? I'm a moderate by nature and on economic issues I'm left of centre. I have nobody to vote for at the moment out of real conviction. I voted Labour at the last General Election because it was the least worst option and our MP is OK. Our borough is now in the control of the Greens, however, so god knows what's going to happen at the next GE. I'm not voting for extremists of any party.

Just have to hope that with comments like this Polanski torpedoes the Greens below the water. The various far right groups will with any luck destroy themselves by infighting and visible incompetence in the councils they now control.

Stella1366 · Today 08:32

It's a start but the sentence is pitiful. The length of some of the sentences imposed recently for some of the physical assault, rapes, knifings and stabbings are beyond ridiculous. That is to say nowhere near enough.

The thing is, he could have made a statement which both bemoaned the sentences for the others but condemned the actual GBH to a policewoman doing her duty. But he didn’t. Because he wants to send the message to the violent, insane fringe who’ve defected to the Greens that their Che Guevara fantasies will have a home there.

Twiglets1 · Today 08:44

Polanski is awful and he shows it once again with his comments on this horrific attack on a woman just doing her job.

CaesarAugusta · Today 09:14

I see why it is controversial characterising these as terrorist offences, because that element of the decision was taken away from the jury.

However, I have no issue with Corner getting a 7 year sentence for an offence as serious as this, and if he had been eligible for parole I would have wanted the sentence to be a hell of a lot longer.

Vintique · Today 09:31

I am glad he was convicted and has a weighty sentence, it was a horrible crime, and I must say I was particularly pissed off when I read the defence’s closing argument for him, it was something along the lines of him being a nice middle class university student (ie not a nasty uneducated common sort of violent offender, who obviously belong in jail) - it smacked of the cases in America where the judge lets the rapist get off with just a slap on the wrist, as it wouldn’t be fair to ruin their bright future as a varsity athlete or whatever…

No he won't. They will not be eligible for early release, any of them, because it is terrorism related.

They will all only be released after the Parole Board deems it appropriate.

Prison will be a shock I bet, but nice middle class people should think a bit more about the crimes they’re willing to do.

CornishPorsche · Today 09:35

@EasternStandard they've been banged up on remand for a while now so they'll have settled in.

What they will have probably been expecting is that all the faux hunger strikes and protests outside the prisons they are held in will work to get them all released. Good news is they are shit out of luck.
