New neighbour has asked us to stop construction until daughter has finished exams update.

So, the last thread filled up so quickly, I barely got a chance to reply to most people. I really wasn't expecting that but I was reassured by the vast majority of replies.
I always like to see a follow up so I'll post this for anyone who's interested.
Anyway, the neighbours turned down our offer of the office space for now but did say the may take us up on it in the coming weeks.
We now have issues on the other side as neighbour there has claimed that knocking our garden wall did damage to his conservatory window. Thankfully, our builders took photos of said conservatory before they knocked the wall as they've clearly been around the block a few times and cracks were there before.
Pretty sure we'll be social pariahs by the time we move in. Such a pity!
I will, of course, be delivering presents to both sets of neighbours in recognition of the hardship they're facing at the moment.

I have a neighbour who asked us to pause construction every day for 2hrs from 1 to 3 so he could nap.

Huh? I've just came across this thread? So I am taking it you have bought your house and your well in your rights to do renovation works as long as goes with council regulations in how high a fence is etc? I don't know whole story, but I am sorry for the neighbours to ask you to postpone works to your garden until there daughter passes her exams is bewildering! Unless she has a condition that restricts her from going to a nice quiet public library or even using the school to revise? I just found this strange, it's a good job your neighbours don't stay were I am and local works getting done on a regular basis from the council fixing streets etc, is your neighbour going to go ask them to stop there works so there daughter can study, I probably will get backlash here but heho, if was my house and I was getting my garden renovated to actually make the neighborhood more appealing then I probably be more inclined to offer the work to be completed before the summer months and you distract them from sitting in there gardens peacefully. If I have got all this wrong then I do so apologise and accept my opinion is not valid, but that is all it is end of the day, and opinion. Cheers.

Exams are not far from finished. My DD is doing her A levels and done a week tomorrow, and most of her friends finish before her. Think GCSEs finish bit earlier. Cheeky beggers re conservatory, some people are so cheeky. Would have loved to have seen their face when builders showed them the photos taken pre work commencing.

Well you’ve only just come across this thread because it was only posted 14 minutes before you commented 😆.

Check the time stamps on the photos of the builder he could be lying about the damage being there, it could also be he made it worse. A home with sour neighbours isn't nice to live in no matter how fabulous.

I think I remember the first thread and, IIRC, the neighbours asked for the work to be delayed for about 3 weeks, or maybe it was more, and the OP calculated this would have cost them £30k!!!

I believe her DH had offered the use of an office nearby for her to study in.

The wall is fully up when original photo is taken.

Thank for the update OP - it's a rare thing oftentimes!

It sounds like the first lot of neighbours have conceded their's was a bit of an unreasonable request and have rightly backed down. Hopefully that will be it from them.

As for the 2nd lot, well done to your builders for taking 'before' photos! There's always one chancer isn't there??!

I hope the rest of the project goes without too much further stress for you, at least not from your neighbours.

Tableforjoan · 09/06/2026 19:22

Sounds like your about to have a right tone of it with your joint neighbour as well.

If read the previous thread, or above, they couldn't, builders booked. Would've cost them 30k to hold off.

  1. we don't know if it's GCSEs, a levels or degree exams.
  2. different exam boards will have different finish dates.
  3. clearly they won't be over in a week if the neighbour says they may take the office offer up in the coming weeks.

Exams finish on Monday or Tuesday next week, so I’m not sure why they’re asking for 3 weeks.

Crrt · 09/06/2026 19:48

It’s the leavers cert op mentioned in previous thread, 2 weeks ish left of them.

AlohaRose · 09/06/2026 19:52

From memory the OP is in Ireland and the exams are leaving cert not A levels. I have a nephew currently doing those exams and he doesn’t finish until about 22nd June although it does depend on subjects. Most of the big ones – English, Irish, maths are out of the way now.
