AIBU to question the media response to the Belfast attack?

Why are the media being silent on the Belfast attack?

Is the open borders narrative that important to them that they feel the need to ignore one of the most horrific attacks ever seen on a UK street?

I despair for the future of the UK. It’s grim.

No

The people who live in and are from northern Ireland, where this has occurred and been hijacked by loyalist gangs to cause maximum mayhem are pointing out that is what's happening and that it's a northern Ireland problem.

Then there's you. With no clue what you're on about trying explain it to us

You just announced you were stepping away? Why are you so intent on going on about 'loyalists'.

It shouldn't matter who the thugs are surely. I've no idea of the political leanings of anyone else in other protests.

You just won’t give up, will you? This is something you know the square root of nothing about yet you keep arguing with someone who’s forgetten more about NI politics than you’ll ever know. Read the room.

What, this evening? I can’t see anything in the news although I suppose bit early for that.

Yes up near chimney corner hotel. It’s all over Tik tok. Water canons have been deployed.

Had a nap, woke up, came back to see what was happening.

Mainly because you stated earlier that your opinion was all fault lying with the IRA or certainly implied it. I'm just making sure you understand where this violence is coming from.

Right wing, evangelical Christian, DUP supported loyalist things.

It wasn’t an asylum seeker. It was a 19 year old British woman. No riots.

Vile piece of crap.
What is the world coming too, extremism online isn’t helping. How could you cut a person’s head off.
There will be changes in the future for social media around these incidents.
I am not on X but it is no holds barred. I don’t think instagram is much better for content screening.

I'm reading it. Lots of stuff about 'loyalists' the troubles and little understanding of the concerns many have of this atrocity.

We don't have to live in NI to have an opinion. For example I bet you don't live in the US but have opinions about Trump, yes?

Oh 'loyalist' thugs you say?

If you’ve no idea of the political leanings then stop commenting on something you know nothing about. These are loyalist thugs spurred on by UVF/UDA. Looking for an excuse (and this was a perfect one) to spout hatred and create a bit of entertainment leading up to the 12th.

I wouldn’t argue with an American who was born and brought up in the US and understands the politics better than me. I’d listen and learn.

If you want a riot then go ahead.

Noone wants to talk about that do they? Nor the conviction against George Ogilvy for assaulting an elderly neighbour who was recovering from a stroke. Their neighbours suggest they had met

Seeing as the message is rather cryptic and seems to be a conversation between 2 posters then, it's understandable that nobody wants to talk about it.

Oh 'loyalist' thugs you say?

Yes loyalist thugs.
See all the loyalist social media groups that created and circulated the calls for violence regarding the turn out last night and tonight.
Quite literally from self defining loyalist groups, calling for “men of fighting age, wear black, cover your face, be prepared to fight or go to jail” is that not what you would call a thug either?

Walkyrie · Today 20:58

Hopefully it’ll fizzle. It seems wildly unpredictable over there though.

Yes thugs! That's all we need to say. Leave the sectarianism aside for once?

It's a chat forum, debate happens. Either accept that or don't go on forums. I'm not intruding on their FB page or anything I'm disagreeing politely. We probably all have known people from NI. They aren't experts in politics.

No Gloria because descriptions and reality matter. It’s not sectarianism- it is what it is. You really know feck all about NI.

You do not tar a whole nationality/ people with the same brush. It needs to be called out for who and what it is.

EmeraldShamrock000 · Today 21:35

I just watched an interview with two Uganda women who were caught up in the riots, hiding behind the curtain while the street burned.
Terrifying.
I genuinely think the government was crazy placing people in those areas. My friend is a white Catholic, a nurse who gets jeered when on call outs on the shankill road, her car has been vandalised by the grandchildren of the lady she had to visit, she’s been called a smelly taige etc.
I asked how did they know that you were Catholic, she said they can smell it. 😅
The place needs serious investment, not 100’s of hmo’s. Extremely irresponsible of the politicians and housing executive.

In order for debate to happen, people have to listen, learn and apply the new knowledge.

Precious little of that on here.

How can they tell if you’re Catholic or not? Nobody can tell that I am, despite my name being a bit of a giveaway. I guess it’s not that controversial here.

No idea.
Apparently there is differences. There is always verbal hints. Sport interests etc not sure about the look.
Maybe someone from Belfast on here can clarify if they can tell the difference looking at random people without speaking.
A Fenian rather than a Catholic.

Oh yeah I guess that doesn’t apply to us in England. The only giveaway really is where you go to school and what cemetery you plan to be buried in.

You obviously can’t compare it to England though. It’s not religious Protestant vs catholic, it’s cultural Protestant vs catholic and there are many cultural signifiers.
The biggest one is just being an outsider, these communities are small and closed. They know who everyone is and therefore they know if you aren’t.
Other than that there is everything from slang, pronunciation, cultural interests that all signify if someone is loyalist or nationalist.
