AIBU to question the media response to the Belfast attack?

Squirrel001 · 09/06/2026 08:55

Why are the media being silent on the Belfast attack?

Is the open borders narrative that important to them that they feel the need to ignore one of the most horrific attacks ever seen on a UK street?

I despair for the future of the UK. It’s grim.

No idea.
Apparently there is differences. There is always verbal hints. Sport interests etc not sure about the look.
Maybe someone from Belfast on here can clarify if they can tell the difference looking at random people without speaking.
A Fenian rather than a Catholic.

Edited

What do you mean by a fenian and not a catholic?

I could make a good guess at most people from how they speak, dress, move. Of course I’ll never know if I’m right because I don’t speak to everyone. Unless you’re from here it’s hard to explain. Then asking someone their name is a clue but the biggest giveaway is what school they went to or where they grew up. Thankfully it’s much more diverse now and where I live now wouldn’t give anything away (thankfully).

I’ve a very Irish name and will often change it to something else if I have to leave my name for a table or an order in a coffee shop (unless it’s the ‘right’ side of town’).

Interesting! I’ve always felt I could tell the difference physically although I’ll wait to be asked for the reason why before giving it. I try to guess and get it right probably 80% of the time. DH thought I was bonkers when I first mentioned it but now he’s convinced too!

If anyone is interested, Agenda Free TV on YouTube is running Reuters live aerial coverage of the Newtownabbey area. Might be helpful for concerned locals.

Thanks for explaining.
The fenian atheist, identifies as Irish but non religious.
Despite this craziness, there has been huge improvements over the years in relations. I often travelled on the train chatting to Protestant women chatting about everything’s but political issues. DH has no interest in it, never has. He has a good friend in work from NI living in Dublin, they were avoiding school/sport chat for weeks - both happy to realise that neither was interested or held any crazy views.

In order for debate to happen, people have to listen, learn and apply the new knowledge.

Precious little of that on here.

From whom? There's been pages of talk but little debate. There's been sneering and dismissivenes because we don't all live in NI. There's been top trumps on murders. There's been an horrific murder in England rejected as not worth talking about because it didn't happen in NI. There's been accusations of racism. There's been calls for the OP to return and for her to be called a coward. Hardly surprising she hasn't returned is it?
I have every sympathy for the decent people of NI having to live with this terror on the streets because I was caught up in the Bradford riots and attacked with half charlies and baseball bats whilst driving. It's terrifying to be mobbed. But as for learning anything from this thread about NI then forget it.

OonaStubbs · Yesterday 22:06

It wasn’t an asylum seeker. It was a 19 year old British woman. No riots.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crmpejxlm7do?app-referrer=deep-link

Why would there be riots against a 19 year old British woman? What would they riot about?
The riots now are about the government allowing immigrants to come here who then go on to behead people. Unsurprisingly, people aren't in favour of that. When we have enough of our own violent people, why import more?

Noodledog · Yesterday 22:13

BIossomtoes · Yesterday 18:39

Well I didn't say there wasn't violence, I said 3 arrests didn't sound like chaos and mayhem tbf.

Presumably you’ve seen the pictures of burnt out cars and the bus and read the eye witness accounts? I’d say chaos and mayhem was a mild description. If there were only three arrests in the midst of that I’d say it reflects pretty poorly on PSNI.

Aren't you the poster who spent many hours the other day insisting that the BLM protests were entirely peaceful? I think you're being just a teeny bit hypocritical accusing others of being guilty of behaviour you're happy to indulge in yourself when you find it convenient.

BIossomtoes · Yesterday 22:15

So one attempted beheading is acceptable, another isn’t depending on who’s carrying it out? It’s a bloody good thing the law doesn’t take that view.

My Dh is English and also thought I was bonkers but now that he realises that I’m right the majority of the time he understands. he’s worked in several places since moving here and is much better at distinguishing. Not that it matters but it’s a ‘thing’ people from NI are so tuned into that it’s part of a conversation. When he talks about someone in work I automatically say- where do they live or what school did they go to? Most of the time he’ll say ‘how do I know?’ Like he never thinks to ask lol weirdo 🤣

Suppose it might be akin to an east Londoner (born and bred) being able to pick out a south Londoner just by how they present?

I haven’t accused anyone of anything. 🤷‍♀️

Of course it isn't. Stop with the stupid accusations. Until tonight I knew nothing of this atrocious attack but you did. How did you find out? Did it happen in your vicinity? We could all trawl the 'net and bring up atrocities. Google Bradford Telegraph and Argus. There'll be atrocities on there that you've no knowledge of. I despair.

Once again I haven’t made any accusations. My goodness there’s a lot of tetchiness around tonight.

Then why not riot riot outside Jenricks house or Bravermans? They were the who let him in, not the poor people being terrorised
They could even riot against the party leader that was so happy to welcome them to Reform.

What do they hope to achieve by burning people out of their homes because they look different?

Well, nothing. This is human anger when it has nowhere to go, it will erupt onto pointless targets.

This is the direction of travel until immigration is seriously tackled.

You don’t get to call me stupid and then demand answers to irrelevant questions that you need to be asking OP.

I'll take that as a no then. BTW they weren't irrelevant questions. They were pertinent to your post. That's what happens on a forum. You post something that you think is relevant to you and posters ask questions about it. Take your bat home love. I couldn't give a flying one.

Good. We’re both happy then. ☺️

I agree that immigration probably needs to be looked at at as a uk wide strategy. What would you suggest?

since brexit we can’t get workers in NI. Same the rest of uk. The immigrants are now mostly brown which some people don’t like.
My neighbours carers were all without exception African women (4 in total) coming here to work on appropriate visas. Before that it was Eastern Europeans (white) women . But they no longer come as it’s too hard.
our health and social care service would collapse without people willing to do hard and low paid work.
my dh has a few Sudanese young men that be manages. One in his office crying today due to fear. They came to the uk as legitimate refugees- fleeing war torn Sudan. Then placed in Belfast. They’re over qualified but working for minimum wage. They’re legally allowed to work here. They live in hmo’s because they can’t afford to live alone, plus it would be pretty lonely with no local connections. Their social workers place them together.

nobody ever tars British /irish people with the same brush (thankfully) when thugs go to Marbella as drug dealers and cause havoc and murder. There’s been many examples over the past few years.

What are you talking about?

I get names, schools and the pronunciation of H, but physically? You can see a physical difference between a child from the Shankill and a child from the Falls? A child from the Malone Road and a child from Holywood?

What is your reason?

She’s suggesting there’s physical differences between catholics and Protestants, not just in NI but just full stop.
Absolute madness 😂
Even the biggest sectarian nutters would admit you cannot actually tell if someone is a catholic or Protestant by physical looks.

Yes but I can tell you’re already offended so I won’t elaborate even though I’m also referring to members of my own family! It’s a certain feature which doesn’t apply to all of the people concerned, but when I see the feature, 80% of the time I’m right. My gran has it (Irish parents).

It’s just an observation, like I said it doesn’t apply to everyone. I’ve been asked repeatedly if I’m Polish (I’m not, I’m English and have no Polish blood that I’m aware of) but it’s not unusual for Caucasian people to be fairly distinct or have common features according to where they live.

And I was referring to NI, not Catholics and Protestants in general. Otherwise you would be able to tell in England and you can’t (have spent a lot of time with both)
