Teenagers at the gym

AIBU to be sick of it?

Obviously now exams are over a lot of teens have started coming to the gym. It’s rammed tonight, lots of (mainly girls) hogging each machine, spending more time chatting than working out, and one girl was actually screaming as she ran on the treadmill.

I wish they had a set period of time after work for those of us who want to actually work out

Why do you think they have any less right to be there than you?
Or are you cross that you're being outlifted by a 16 yo? My DD is in the gym x 5 a week and lifting 200kg and i couldn't be prouder of her.

What an odd response. The OP wasn't complaining about teenagers out lifting her (and I can move 200kg too, do I'm also not green with envy), but about groups being inconsiderate and inappropriate with gym space.

Responses like these are like if you're lying quietly on a sun lounger and the pool lifeguard tells kids running round with water pistols to settle down. You don't jump up shrieking 'but I'm not running round', because you've got the intelligence to understand he wasn't talking to you. Imagine that, but this scenario.

DeathNote11 · 10/06/2026 07:34

You can't seem to go anywhere these days without negotiating poorly socialised kids &/or dogs.

ChamonixMountainBum · 10/06/2026 07:58

Some oddly defensive posts here. Nobody is saying teenagers should not be allowed into a gym, just that if they are there they should use it for exercise and not goofing around or hogging equipment while not actually working out. Hardly unreasonable.

ijustwanttoworkout · 08/06/2026 17:57

The issue for me is my local gym is a) definitely in financial trouble and b) so far away from work that by the time I’m done for the day I’m definitely not going to want to get home, get changed and then go back out to the gym

Could you go there straight from work? I know that I would mentally find it harder to get back out the door once home. Whereas if I tell myself I'm going to the gym from work I'm more likely to follow though and just do it without too much faff.

No I just don’t stick to it. Plus it’s definitely closing soon. They’ve reduced their staffed hours to 4 hours a week

I guess it’s hard not get defensive when you have a kid who is sensible and appropriate in the gym (and I know she is as both me and her dad have been in at the same time), pays full price, would agree with the op and I still get a snarky comment in response to what was meant to be a light hearted comment about teenagers on holiday never getting up.

I get it’s frustrating but I see just as much bad behaviour from other groups (as does dd).

fwiw op, dd has a job (sports coach) but is very lucky to have that as part time jobs for teens are really hard to get. She’s also allowed a holiday and she’s allowed to go to the gym as is the kid who is an elite athlete and the other teens who are responsible and respectful. This does genuinely sound like you think you are more important than these kids when you should be (rightfully I agree) pissed off at anyone who doesn’t behave

AHalfling · 10/06/2026 08:41

Our gym has a specific time for teens, and they can only go then but their membership is discounted. it works really well. They fill the gym from 3-5 then the grown ups get it back

As others have said, teens need their spaces to hang out. But it does have to be a balanced use of space

Or rude, entitled old people.

ChamonixMountainBum · 10/06/2026 09:21

Why would you get defensive over your daughter who is 'sensible and appropriate' when down the gym? The criticisms on this thread are clearly not aimed at her. I am a regular gym goer and due to the nature of my job changing locations frequently have been a member of all the main chain gyms and quite a few independents. You do over time begin to recognise certain types of gym goer - the muscle vest gym bro hogging the free weights, the super glam full make up yoga girl who never breaks sweat, the 'hey let me show you what you are doing wrong' sleazy man offering unwanted 'advice' to women, to the love island wannabes preening in the mirror taking selfies, the nochalant rugby bloke in club kit squatting insane weights and yes, groups of teens wandering from machine to machine pratting about and not actually doing any exercise.

Tessasanderson · 10/06/2026 09:33

Only used a couple of public gyms since i took up weights 4 years ago. Didnt have any issues with youths but it just wasnt my bag to share tbh. Built a gym at home, mainly Primal Strength gear and never looked back. 4 years down the line i am probably break even on the cost and i go in when it suits me (Every day lately).

YANBU to get frustrated but you either vote with your feet and go elsewhere or you change your times to a more unsociable hour to get it done.

If he was an elite international athlete he’d be using training facilities of his associated club/team, not the local gym 😂

we have international athletes use our gym!

Hey 👋.
Found the very same problem here .
Teens taking over the gym , so annoying, loads on phones & chatting to friends .
You may not be open to this suggestion , but what I did was buy a stair steppers machine for home , like not the mini home one , a proper one .I bought weights , mat & resistance bands .
I love it , I’m able to exercise whatever time suits me to get a workout in 😊.
Loads of diff exercise plans on line .
I know lots of people like to go to gym to get out of house aswel so may not be for you at all .

Justusethebloodyphone · 10/06/2026 12:22

Isn’t part of the problem the lack of supervision and enforcement of rules in the gyms?

There’s very few places for teens to hang out and many of them will morph into actual responsible gym goers as they grow up which has to be a good thing.

However teens with all that energy and newfound independence are gonna teen and it seems no establishment (not just gyms) wants to actually enforce any standards anymore so how do they learn?

It’s called off season. Do you know anything about premier league football? All the players not ant the World Cup are now on holiday but still working out wherever the are and for kids that can be a local gym. Instead of going on holiday he goes to the gym here. You don’t know what you are talking about at all.

The kids are finished at the club to study for exams and ended last game beginning of May. The physios, gym staff etc are also given holiday that time off for their age group. He can’t go there in off season due to Healy and safety and safeguarding but you would know that right?

Pre-season starts beginning of July. He goes back then.

There is clearly a gap between those times and that is why he is at the local gym.

Yeah he plays for a Category 1 Academy and professionally for his country . Please do let me know your knowledge of premier league academy players and what they do in off season .rather than looking like you just want to pretend I don’t know.

So not IF. He IS. Buy a clue you sound naive to make a point.

Oh definitely. All the premier league footballers are down at my local gym!

Thankfully 7am is a lot quieter and there’s none of the annoying brats here.

You just want to be that person don’t you. They wouldn't be at your crappy local which sounds like it is going to close anyway. It’s probably better you aren’t around people with you attitude..maybe they are being annoying brats in response to your attitude which frankly sucks.

And you prove once again how awful a person you are. You just said you use the gym at 7am so yeah you do use one. That has nothing to do with being sane.

I suggest you just stay away from people you sound insane yourself. I’m done - you can’t argue with crazy or stupid.

FortyFacedFuckers · 11/06/2026 07:50

Jellybunny98 · 08/06/2026 17:55

Our local Puregym used to be like this, not just with teens to be fair but people of all ages who would stand 3 people around 1 machine taking turns and chatting for half an hour at a time, even with your usual gym goers it was always too busy to get a good session done during peak times.

My husband & I both switched to a smaller independent gym and because its just slightly more expensive (£35 a month compared to the Puregym £17 a month) it seems to only have people who actually do want to train, total different environment and we both massively prefer it!

I was going to say similar to this, the big chain gyms around here are like this but I have gone to a couple of smaller independent gyms and they are not like this at all

She means the gym she doesn’t use is the one that looks like it’s about to close. That’s why she hasn’t switched to it, as was suggested upthread.

Yes. Not my local gym.

To be fair it’s my own tiredness - but the premier league footballers aren’t at this gym either!

Not really. I’m an adult with fitness goals, paying full price for my membership. They’re children there to mess about and their parents pay a discounted rate.

Being an adult with fitness goals doesn’t give you more right to be there 😂.

The company has decided to give them equal access for a reduced price. As they might for a OAP, for example. Their reduced price doesn’t give them less right to be there.

I can understand it’s annoying, but such is life 🤷‍♀️

It’s the combination of not paying full price and only being there to have a jolly that really winds me up

Maaaate. Hopefully your morning workout chills you out a bit, you’re crackers 😂😂
I have it at my gym, there was a girl say FaceTiming in a machine I wanted to use last night so after about 5 mins I just smiled and asked nicely if she’s ok me using it and she smiled back said sorry and hopped off.
nobody is asking you parent kids, just treat other humans different than you in a a slightly less entitled way

I find it perplexing when it’s groups of boys suited and booted, no actual gym gear
asked my boys (who go in actual sports attire) and apparently it’s a thing to go in chinos and Chelsea boots

Really!!? Suited and booted? Confused
Can't wait for that look to hit my gym Hmm
