Teenagers at the gym

AIBU to be sick of it?

Obviously now exams are over a lot of teens have started coming to the gym. It’s rammed tonight, lots of (mainly girls) hogging each machine, spending more time chatting than working out, and one girl was actually screaming as she ran on the treadmill.

I wish they had a set period of time after work for those of us who want to actually work out

Totally agree! My gym used to be lovely and quiet at certain times but they gave a special discount to the adjacent high school and it’s now rammed with kids. The air is thick with body sprays and the uncontained BO that teens get when they don’t wash properly. They hog the machines, taking selfies and photos posing and pouting, it’s like being in a youth club. I’m all for kids adopting healthy habits, but I’d prefer them to do it from 1530 to 1700 so that I can avoid them. I will not be renewing at this gym sadly.

Renamedefault · 08/06/2026 17:45

What was she screaming at?

Maybe it was Phoebe from Friends?

ChamonixMountainBum · 09/06/2026 18:22

Most of the time they (teenagers) just use the place to hang out rather then do exercise. A bit irritating when they just sit on the machines scrolling on their phones but they usually clear off when asked.

bengalcat · 09/06/2026 18:36

I go before work @6.30am - no teen is going to be up at that time

Glasgowrache · 09/06/2026 18:38

YANBU, same with issues at my gym with people hogging machines whilst scrolling instagram.

BooBooDoodle · 09/06/2026 19:04

Drives me up the wall. Spend more time picking their tiny shorts out of their arses and posing in front of the mirrors. Last week two lasses were sat on the arms of the treadmill taking selfies. It’s like a youth club at the gym we go to. We have complained as you can’t move around the machines properly and do an actual workout and the smell of perfume is enough to make me gag. Considering moving gyms because of this.

ijustwanttoworkout · 08/06/2026 18:00

Not really. I’m an adult with fitness goals, paying full price for my membership. They’re children there to mess about and their parents pay a discounted rate.

Well my kid goes to the gym regularly and is an elite athlete playing internationally (football). Normally he uses the gym at his academy but he is on study leave/end of season.

So let’s not stereotype just because some kids who paid money didn’t work out the way you wanted. You sound entitled.

cucumber4745 · 09/06/2026 21:15

I ended up injured after oblivious teen walked into my barbell mid-lift. I had them bump into me and what not and most were defo under 16 so shouldn’t have been allowed in to begin with. I would go in the morning to avoid this and eventually had to change gyms.

Wre · 09/06/2026 21:18

I go early, in and out by 7am.

It is quite entertaining watching the teenagers peacocking in the gym.

Yabu (a bit). Early evening is peak attendance time for teenagers.

I find it perplexing when it’s groups of boys suited and booted, no actual gym gear
asked my boys (who go in actual sports attire) and apparently it’s a thing to go in chinos and Chelsea boots

WearyAuldWumman · 09/06/2026 10:24

I'll also add that one time I was having difficulty adjusting a seat on a machine and a teenage laddie came over and offered to help. I thanked him for his kindness.

Funny, I had the same when I couldn’t reach the lat pull down to change the attachment, I’m very small 😂

keepswimming38 · 10/06/2026 00:14

Go to more expensive gyms. They also have a right to exercise.

NormasArse · 10/06/2026 00:15

There was a girl of about 15 sitting on my favourite bike, scrolling on her phone, and turning the pedals so slowly, they were barely moving, the other day.

For over 40 minutes.

Jk987 · 10/06/2026 04:58

They have just the same rights as you to use the machines. Let them be teens like you were once.

THisbackwithavengeance · 10/06/2026 05:13

Meh. I think it’s fantastic that teenagers are exercising (sort of) and spending time at gyms rather than drinking cider in parks which is what we did in the 80s.

You have a "favourite bike"...?

Was she expected to know this?! YABU

what does this mean @TouchtheEarth ?! You know you can watch a thread without posting inane ellipsis to clog it up?

myladyjane · 10/06/2026 06:51

I have one of the exercising ones - she goes 5 times a week, plan all mapped out, mostly by herself as friends get in the way of her work out (she can lift some fairly impressive stuff now) and is on nodding terms with some of the daily gym Bros. It has been a total godsend through her exam period as she uses it for mental health reasons and I pay full price.

she would totally agree with you tbh. She tries to avoid when others go - pre GCSEs she’d leave the house at 6 to go before school. During exams she tends to go quite late. She will happily ask them to move though or a particular favourite tactic with a bunch of lads is to rack up her deadlift weight next to them and do her set - she’s quite intimidating in her own way

I hate to break it to you but exam haven’t finished - GCSEs mostly finish next week so they are still at school albeit with a lot of study leave (mine went lunchtime this week as soon as her exam finished). I’d aim for late morning/lunch time if you can as most will still be rotting in bed

That means that @TouchtheEarth wrote a post, thought better of it & since posts can’t be deleted, replaced it with … . If you tap on the Edited just under the ellipses, you’ll see.

Unfortunately I’m employed so can’t just go in the morning. Maybe they should try getting jobs

If he was an elite international athlete he’d be using training facilities of his associated club/team, not the local gym 😂

I do sometimes think society as a whole has become a little disempowered when it comes to children/teenagers. My dad always says that whenever he was out as a lad his dad would always know what he’d been up to before he got home as his dad’s mates would have been keeping an eye on him. Even when I was younger the adults around me would keep an eye on me.

they are oversized children getting excited at the gym. If they go too far, you are allowed to say something.

I bet if you said to the girl screaming in enjoyment- ‘come on now, less screaming needed in the gym’ she’d laugh embarrassedly and pipe down. Teenage girls do scream when they are having fun, they can also be told not to.

equally if they are hogging a machine it will be because they are totally oblivious. Suggest they move over and give you a turn and I bet you any money they’ll move off straight away.

as a mother I’d feel a lot happier letting my teenagers out and about if I thought adults were collectively keeping an eye out and putting them right when they got things wrong.

Why on earth didn’t you just ask her if you could have a go. You could even explain it’s your favourite bike and I bet she would have jumped off.

It’s not my job to parent your children.
