About year 6 leavers hoodies

Dd is in year 6 and one of the parents very kindly organised leavers hoodies for the whole of year 6.

I had two older children that attended a different school and in their case, their school organised the hoodies and the children were allowed to wear them for the last half term (after SATS).

DD’s school have said no. They’ve even gone as far as to say that any children wearing the hoodies will have them confiscated. The school have said that the children can wear them on the last day only.

I’m very surprised as the school is actually quite lax when it comes to enforcing uniform rules generally.

The year 6 parents are not happy.

Aibu to think that the children should be allowed to wear their leavers hoodies now?

Did the organiser check with the school beforehand? Were all the children included, with sensitivity i.e. those whose parents might not be able to afford a hoodie?
On the surface it does seem a bit mean and petty to confiscate them before the last day but there could be good reasons for it. We give them out in May, just before SATs, but although it’s arranged by parents there are links to and advice from the school to ensure no one is left out. Maybe your school has had problems in the past, hence the ban.

Really, is it a big deal? Just wear them on the last day.

Part of growing up is understanding there are some rules to follow and some that should be challenged. This is most definitely one that shouldn’t even enter the latter category.
And if you break the rules then yes, it is reasonable to have them confiscated - the parents and children know the rules and consequences.

The school is probably preempting the inevitable drama of lost hoodies.
And PP makes a good point that some children may not be able to afford one.

It’s such a waste of they only wear them for a few weeks, they’d be better off letting them wear them for the whole year.

Did every child get one?

DDs school gave out the hoodies on the last day. I thought the Residential trip would have been the better time... but the first time wearing the hoodies as a class was imprtant to them, not dribs and drabs. They werefunded by the PTA.

If any child has been excluded due to price... they shpuld definitely NOT be wrsring them.

As far as I am aware the organiser contacted the school first to see whether the school were organising any. They were not organising them and they refused to send an email or anything like that.

The parent managed to contact every parent so that everyone had the option to buy one. Every single child chose to buy one and the hoodies have the child’s name and the school logo.

It is a big deal to the children and parents who ordered one.

All the children wear PE hoodies every day anyway.

My dses wore their Senior school Leavers’ hoodies all the time, after they’d finished school, @Namenamchange. They didn’t have Yr 6 Leavers’ hoodies when they left primary school, but if they had, I’m sure they would have worn them until they out grew them.

I didn’t organise them but there was a WhatsApp group and from what I can see every single child opted to buy one. They were very reasonable and she did everything to make sure that everyone was included.

Schools have different rules, that's not new. Some kids are allowed to wear them from the residential in September/ October

Others prefer to keep it special and not have to deal with the excitement too early, so leavers hoodie come at the very end of the year.

Check the rules before ordering, and buy a bigger size if they're not allowed them early. It's not really a big deal is it? They'll wear them eventually.

They are not part of the uniform and in some schools, it would be really unfair for the families who do not buy them, because not everyone has a leaver hoodie...

Just wear them outside of school!

The school organised ours, but you could only wear them at school after the SATS if you ordered them in navy blue - despite the school selling them in a whole range of colours. It was a shame as only a handful went for navy.

The children whose parents either can't afford or don't see the point of them won't have one. Creates unnecessary division in the classroom.

Seems silly to buy a hoodie if only allowed to wear for one day. Hardly worth buying one

School are right. It's not fair if not everyone has one and they are more aware of the financial situation of the class than you.

All of the children have a hoodie so no one would be left out.

There is plenty of time to wear them outside school. Also, until the end of term they haven’t actually “left” 😏

But will they every year?

How did the organiser obtain the school logo? Did the school provide it or was it reproduced by the organiser/ printers ? I think this is relevant in terms of whether or not the school assisted in creating the hoodies.

in either case, they are not school uniform and they are not permitted to be worn until the final day. Why is this a problem? School leavers hoodies are keepsake items for use after leaving school. My husband still has his and wears in lounging around the house. Bit snug now, mind.

What an odd thing to do. I am sure the parent thought they were being brilliant in some way but really ? I cannot see what is kind about organising hoodies.
I hope he or she didn’t make any money from it either.
I wouldn’t have thought the school too thrilled.

How odd. In our school they order them in summer term in p6 and then where then the whole of p7.

But it’s not a big deal.
It’s a hoodie - the school were clear that they were not going to engage in it.
A parent organised it, which was good of them and the school have agreed to them being worn on the last day.

As a parent, keep these things in perspective and help your child keep it in perspective. It will help them as they enter secondary school and the wider world.
Don’t sweat the small things.

Enjoy the hoodie - my DC wore them loads outside of school, well into y8.

They aren’t part of the uniform though. Parents can’t just decide to add something else to the uniform.

I can’t speak for every other year, but all the children bought a hoodie this year.

Besides, if the argument is about some children being left out, you could say that about them wearing their leavers hoodies on the last day.

You could say that about the residential that cost hundreds of pounds.

You could say that about the PE hoodies and the never ending own clothes days and dress up days and donate for this and donate to wear that.

Most Year 6 have leavers hoodie, organised by a parent... Of course it's kind when one parent is doing all the work!

My dc’s primary were only allowed to wear them on the last day under the old head teacher. There’s a new head now and from what I gather they will be able to wear them for the last couple of weeks of term at least, which is an improvement. I don’t see the point in them only being allowed for the last day really, although I do understand concerns about them getting lost or some kids not having one.

The hoodies have been organised through the school with plenty of notice (a good few months) given so parents have enough time to save up if needed. They weren’t a thing when I was leaving primary but I think it’s nice for the kids to have a souvenir from their time there. I’ll be keeping them once they’re outgrown in a box with various other bits of ‘childhood memorabilia’.

Ours wear them for the whole of year 6 - which works out to be quite expensive as you end up needing to buy more than one (unless you have a special type of child who never loses anything and never gets it dirty/stinky between washing days).

It seems like your school is on the strict side OP - but perhaps they have had issues before with them getting lost/damaged before the end of the year and parents complaining?
