About year 6 leavers hoodies

Readyforthelaunch · 02/06/2026 16:02

Dd is in year 6 and one of the parents very kindly organised leavers hoodies for the whole of year 6.

I had two older children that attended a different school and in their case, their school organised the hoodies and the children were allowed to wear them for the last half term (after SATS).

DD’s school have said no. They’ve even gone as far as to say that any children wearing the hoodies will have them confiscated. The school have said that the children can wear them on the last day only.

I’m very surprised as the school is actually quite lax when it comes to enforcing uniform rules generally.

The year 6 parents are not happy.

Aibu to think that the children should be allowed to wear their leavers hoodies now?

I have 3 kids. They all got them on the last day of school. This was the same in Y6 and Y11. Seems weird to have them for so long before you actually leave.

Never heard of yr 6 Leavers Hoodies...jesus , nearly as much potential drama as year 11 'Proms'😆

I know, it wasn't that long ago that leavers' hoodies weren't really a thing for primary school, now it seems the parents are worse than the bloody kids with their moaning and banging on about how the little darlings not being able to wear them whenever they want is worse treatment than Nelson Mandela ever got. Then they'll scream blue murder when the school commits some minor breach of a policy they do care about. I don't know how teachers put up with it, I really don't.

My child went to a school that was pragmatic. Kids bought the hoodie in September and wore it all year. They were slightly more than a school sweatshirt but as parents knew they were ok to wear in school, they simply reduced spend on the sweatshirts. Probably worked out more expensive all told but my kid wore is until it was threadbare. I think if I was a head at a school in a less affluent area and had experience of kids being left out, I would take a different view.

Near me the state school kids get a leavers’ hoodie at the start of their last year of primary and wear it constantly. I know there are 11, and I’m being mean but it’s just so lame! 😂 I can’t explain my irrational dislike of them. They are just so uncool, but the kids must think they are the bees knees.

😂 you may live near me! And yes, I thought wot? when I first heard of them but the kids deffo thought they were the business. They were also a way of marking seniority int he school and getting used to the idea of moving on from primary. I do know of several school’s that have different ties or sweaters etc as the kids go up the school which I always think is a waste of money, but I guess it is similar in that it marks a transition. The school didn’t do a prom or the like so it didn’t feel like it was over the top.

My Daughter has a Year 6 Hoodie- organised by the PTA to raise a bit of money for the school.

They can wear them for PE days or as jackets to and from school. They still have to wear school uniform the rest of the time.

They can however wear them for their leavers week!

This seems like a sensible compromise!

No way could I wash, dry and iron a hoodie every day for school if it was worn as a school uniform.

Extra entry for who cares

Melancholyflower · 03/06/2026 20:26

In the school I work in, the hoodies are organised by the school. The PTA make a small contribution per child, and any child that wouldn't get one because of the family's financial situation gets one bought for them (the PTA don't know who, we just tell them how much we need them to contribute). The deal is that the children get them before Easter, and can wear them to and from school, at break and lunch, on residential, but they are not allowed to actually wear them during lesson time. Inevitably there are a few grumbles at first about taking them off in class, but we say that's the deal -otherwise they would get them later in the year.

Most of them wear them over uniform instead of a coat, so get lots of wear out of them in the spring, and they don't feel compelled to wear them even when it's roasting hot in the summer, because they've already had a few months of wearing them.

ChicGreyZebra · 03/06/2026 20:26

Our school organised them last September/October and they’ve been part of the uniform for Y6 since then!

Melancholyflower · 03/06/2026 20:30

I'd be concerned if they were wearing them every day they'd be filthy/stinky, as surely most children don't usually wear the same jumper for the whole week without washing them?

tiredandtiredandtiredandtired · 03/06/2026 16:23

And what about the child whose parents can’t afford a hoodie? To be reminded of the fact that they couldn’t have one every day? As a teacher, I completely understand and agree with the school’s stance. As a parent, I also understand. Why would you want to flaunt a hoodie in front of a child who through no fault of their own can’t match their peers?

All of our children get one - we know which families might struggle financially and don't make a big deal of it, but we sort it out.

Ours are only given them on the last day. This seems standard in the schools around us. I guess, they are concentrating on GCSE’s.

Alpols. Just seen its year 6. In that case, can’t see why they can’t wear them now?

In DS school the hoodies replace theor normal uniform. They have to wear them for their class photo. I can see why the schools dont want to organise them because it is an enormous pain in the arse and takes hours!

crazycatladie · 03/06/2026 21:01

My child is allowed to wear their’s for the last half term. They were ordered by school and have the school logo on the front and are navy like the uniform.

Bedlingtonwarrior · 03/06/2026 21:04

The whole idea of leavers hoodies seems both ridiculous and bizarre

vickylou78 · 03/06/2026 22:43

Can't the kids wear their hoodies at weekends and evenings etc. in our school they won't get them till last day but I don't see an issue as it's not part of their uniform

Tallulah1972 · 04/06/2026 00:02

The primary school I work at organises hoodies for Y6. They’ve been wearing theirs since spring term. I’m sorry your DD’s school is being an arse over it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/06/2026 00:08

Seems mean. I love seeing the yr 6 in theirs as can choose their colour so I’m seeing friendship groups of girl gangs of same pink purple red and blue green for boys

No one is left out in our school. Those that can't afford them let the office know and the PTA then fund these. We would never want a child to be left out of something that is a big deal for the year 6 classes.

As a teacher (and parent of a child who wanted two hoodies) and owner of several hoodies that are kindly gifted to me by the parents of whichever Y6 class I'm teaching that year, my observations:

  1. Only buy one- your child will never wear it again
  2. Please wash it often- they are thick hoodies worn at the hottest time of the year by children who've started puberty but often aren't good at washing!
  3. Just agree with the school.
  4. Do be careful with the info on the top. One year the PTA put the children's full name on the hoodies- not good for safeguarding.
  5. I am appreciative but now I own about 6, I'd secretly be happy not to have one in future! My school allows kids to wear them in the summer term, which seems fair. Too early and they get lost, and become meaningless. Too late, and what's the point?

My son has two. Every day he comes home with either his lunch on it or mud from the playground and I like him to go to school looking clean.

MrCollinsandhisboiledpotatoes · 04/06/2026 12:00

It is impossible to answer this question without seeing the hoodies. They could be bloody awful and the school may have a valid point.
I'm not saying they are, they're most likely not. But how are we supposed to know?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/06/2026 12:02

@OneFunBrickNewt - all three of my dses wore their senior school leavers’ hoodies over and over again until they wore out.

I always intended to get a picture of all three of them together, in their hoodies, once they’d all got them, but never managed to coordinate it, and am kicking myself for that.

mondaytosunday · 04/06/2026 12:06

Yea well they ain’t going to be wearing after of any of my friends experience is to go by. That kids wore them in school and once they left school they got chucked to the back of the closet (though they were school leavers, we didn’t do anything nearly as expensive for Y6 - I think they got a t-shirt with all their names on it which I don’t think any child ever actually wore).

You aren't growing anywhere near as much by the time you leave secondary though. You may have even stopped growing entirely.
Year 6s can grow out of a hoodie by the time it's cool enough to even wear a hoodie.

APurpleSquirrel · 04/06/2026 16:01

I’m the PTA Chair at my DCs primary school. With the agreement of the school we instigated leavers hoodies in 2020 when all the usual leavers activities were halted due to covid. We’ve organised & paid for them ever since. The kids look forward to Yr6 for the hoodies.
I liaise with the class TA to get sizes & colours in the spring term, with the aim to have them ready to give out after SATs & they can then wear them as uniform until the end of the summer term, which is what has happened this year. They are all currently on residential & I believe most Yr6s have taken their hoodies.
Our Head is very much in favour of them. Unfortunately it sounds like your Head/school aren’t, which is a real shame.
