About year 6 leavers hoodies

Readyforthelaunch · Yesterday 16:02

Dd is in year 6 and one of the parents very kindly organised leavers hoodies for the whole of year 6.

I had two older children that attended a different school and in their case, their school organised the hoodies and the children were allowed to wear them for the last half term (after SATS).

DD’s school have said no. They’ve even gone as far as to say that any children wearing the hoodies will have them confiscated. The school have said that the children can wear them on the last day only.

I’m very surprised as the school is actually quite lax when it comes to enforcing uniform rules generally.

The year 6 parents are not happy.

Aibu to think that the children should be allowed to wear their leavers hoodies now?

It's a pretty expensive thing to wear for one day only!
My DD school had school trip hoodies from the start of Y6 (they had a residential and they were very handy for the school to spot the kids!) and then a leaver's hoodie for the final term. They could wear the leaver's hoodie from the day they got it, which was the day before the Easter holidays.

Creepyoctopus · Yesterday 17:37

My son in currently in year 6 and his school sold the hoodies themselves they where allowed to wear them from the minute they started year 6

Are leavers' hoodies a thing now? I'm a primary teacher and this is the first I've heard of them.

tinyspiny · Yesterday 17:40

The bottom line here @Readyforthelaunch is your opinion matters not a jot , the school has made its decision and frankly you are being utterly ridiculous thinking it’s a big deal .

I got roped into organising school leavers hoodies a few years ago as school didn’t want to arrange it. It was a logistical nightmare! Had to chase parents for weeks over payments (it wasn’t compulsory to get one but every parent asked for one) School then wanted to hand them out the week before the end of term. It was baking hot and the children were all wearing them in the scorching weather.

ViaRia01 · Yesterday 17:41

Why are people saying these hoodies are wasteful? You often see teens out and about wearing their school hoodies… how is that wasteful if they’re being worn?

Suddenaborealstop · Yesterday 17:42

These hoodies aren’t uniform.

Non uniform can, and does, make some kids lose their sense of regulation.

I can see they may be reasons why the school don’t want them worn before then.

Also, at the risk of being told I lack fun, it’s the rules they’ve set out. I do wonder when parents question the rules if they think the school made them up for shits and giggles.

My kids all had these hoodies when they left primary. And unless it is peculiar to the area of the UK where I live, most summer holidays you see kids around and about wearing their hoodies. So if the issue is lack of use, encourage them to wear them during the summer holidays.

Leavers hoodies? Deary me.. When did this become a thing?

Are you joking? The parent won't be making a penny. Do you think nobody out there does anything nice without making money from it?

Me and a couple of other parents organised this for our year 6's a few years back, i was the one collected the money and made the payment and i can tell you it actually cost me a little something as the hoodies were quoted at for eg £18.10 per hoodie and i just said £18 to people then paid the balance of a few quid myself.

You may have done so does not automatically mean others will do it your way.

I am afraid I have come too many people who would happily do it differently. Not all socially I hasten to add. And that would be the only reason they would do it.

So no, I wasn’t joking.

Nursemumma92 · Yesterday 17:43

I've not heard of school letting them wear leaving hoodies after sats. At my DD's school they are paid for by the PTA and they are allowed to wear them the last week of school only.

tttigress · Yesterday 17:43

I mean does it really matter either way?

Soon it will be a distant memory.

I would just go with the flow. I wouldn't get upset about it.

I mean, surely the fact that the school wasn't organising hoodies was a fairly clear indication that they didn't want the kids to wear them?

I don't think you have a case for getting pissed off that a school doesn't want kids wearing a non-uniform item that a parent took it upon themselves to purchase, and which the school had nothing to do with. I don't really see why you'd expect the school to say yes to wearing them at school after it was made clear to the parents that leavers' hoodies aren't something the school was choosing to do that year.

My son's school expects parents to organise and the school then hands them out (once said parent has labelled them) like manna from heaven.

BreadedChickenLips · Yesterday 17:45

At our school kids have them for the whole of Y6 and are allowed to wear them to school on PE days. It means they get wear out of them and it goes with PE kit better than a cardigan. It's a very sensible approach and schools who fixate on uniform are focusing on the wrong things.

Ophy83 · Yesterday 17:47

Ours wear them for the whole of year 6... much more friendly for the environment and wallet as they get good use out of them and saved having to buy a logo cardigan this year

bigsoftcocks · Yesterday 17:47

Ours were allowed to wear them on Fridays after SATs. Then end of term. But it was so hot end of term they were sweating but determined !

I don’t know what you mean, disingenuous?

Someone made the point about children being left out and that being the reason why the school said no.

I’m pointing out that no child has been left out, but also that there are lots of ‘paid for extras’ throughout the year that the school offer. Such as trips, PE hoodies, own clothes days, dress up days where you have to make a donation, Santas grotto, they do so much that you have to pay for.

I think it’s disingenuous to say that the school are worried about children being left out.

It is disingenuous because they are not the same things at all

They don't cost the same for a start, and some are fund raisers to try to benefit all the children, some are experience offered to the kids and someone has to pay for them, because there's no budget. Not exactly shocking that parents spend a little bit of money for their children education.

Not receiving a hoodie on the last day is not the same as seeing everyone wearing one when you don't have yours.

I get you are annoyed and you think the school rule is silly, but your children are really not going to lose out much but having their hoodie later. Again, just order a big size so they are baggy and can wear them months after, even at home if they prefer

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · Yesterday 17:48

It is a big deal to the children and parents who ordered one.

This is not the schools issue, those expectation have be created by the parents before approval from the school so it is the parents issue to reset those expectations without leaving the kids upset at their school for something that is not the schools fault.

School are allowing them to wear their leavers hoodies on the day they leave which sounds fair 🤷‍♀️

In ds's school they were allowed to wear them twice. Once on the day of a special leavers assembly and then later that week on the final day. Both days they wore them whole year group were giddy with excitement, strutting around in their hoodies, so I can see exactly why the school doesn't want to put up with that more than is necessary.

I think it sort of does.
Listening to the vast range of requests to pay for this, pay for that someone might want to add it all up. The next time a school begs for money for something basic like books they might want to remember what they are asking of people.
Years ago there really wasn’t this money for this, money for that. It isn’t right.

And the schools themselves are being a bit dim. How many hoodies, how many children ? They sanction it. But what, if any, records kept ?
If they sanction it they should keep some records.

Mumtobabyhavoc · Yesterday 17:51

Can't they wear them to/from school and on their lunch breaks?

Winter2020 · Yesterday 17:51

ViaRia01 · Yesterday 17:41

Why are people saying these hoodies are wasteful? You often see teens out and about wearing their school hoodies… how is that wasteful if they’re being worn?

I think it depends when the school dishes them out and on the child.

My son (16) just got his at half term. It's me that has taken it out of the cellophane and I don't think he will ever even try it on much less wear it. Utter waste of the earth's resources.

It's hard not to buy one - the school puts all the kids in the year groups first names on - only of those that have bought one so it's a bit of a guilt trip.

andnowwhatdowedo · Yesterday 17:51

You would have done it differently if you were in charge OP, but you're not. It must be stressful and time consuming for the teachers to have to keep explaining their decisions to angry parents. Some things are not worth fighting over.

ElleJayC · Yesterday 17:51

Seems a shame, mine all loved their leavers hoodies. School made a big deal out of them, they all had a vote on the colour so the whole year group had the same. Parents ordered them early via school, and then school held onto them and handed them out after the last SATS exam along with a small celebration. They then wore them every day until they left - and over the summer.
It was such a special part of the end of Primary for all of mine.

Bristolandlazy · Yesterday 17:51

My daughters school they wore them on the last day. I've seen loads of (presumably) school leavers wearing them in the school holidays. My daughter still wears hers now in her twenties. Parents are not happy, tough.

ByRoseBiscuit · Yesterday 17:52

All the schools I’ve worked in and both of my children were allowed to wear the leavers hoodies after SATs. No point having them for one day! As soon as my kids were in secondary they didn’t want to wear their primary hoodies anymore.

Cyclingmummy1 · Yesterday 17:55

It's a non-uniform item. It's not allowed.
