Is M&S getting smaller or am I getting bigger?

I've always been an M&S size 12 and if anything sometimes that's on the big side. Really like a lot of the bits they have in store at the moment but size 12 no longer fits and I need a 14. I don't think I am any bigger than normal and the scales would suggest the same, maybe I am though.

Is anyone else finding they no longer fit into their usual M&S size and need to size up?

You are being unreasonable = I need to cut down on my porklife mate get some exercise

You are NOT being unreasonable = shrinkflation at play at M&S

Haha. I had exactly the opposite thought today, I ordered some stuff from M&S and it was huge!

OnceYoureToastYouCanNeverBeBread · 26/05/2026 16:49

II think it’s just crap inconsistent sizing by the cheapest manufacturers they use tbh, but I had the opposite problem. I’m a size 10, and even a size 6 I ordered in their chinos recently was too big, after I’d first returned the 10 then their 8 . Very frustrating.

GoodVibesHere · 26/05/2026 16:51

I recently bought my usual high-leg knickers in M&S, been buying them for years and they were so so uncomfortable. I think they are skimping on the amount of material they're using.

SinceYouSaySo · 26/05/2026 16:52

YANBU - I am size 6 everywhere but M&S, where I used to be size 6, but now a size 10. TBF, I think that is closer to my true size, anyway, but I sure wish these shops would get their act together!!!!

AnnaQuayRules · 26/05/2026 16:54

For me it's the opposite. I think their clothes are oversized. Their size 10 trousers literally drop off me, and I wouldn't say I'm small

UninvitedSibs · 26/05/2026 16:55

M and S sizing I find very large. Like Primark. Inconsistent sizing is such a pain.

MrsJPBP · 26/05/2026 16:55

M&S have recently changed their sizing I believe, to be more in line with other retailers (historically they’ve always been pretty generous on sizing). So no, it’s not you!

Hollowvoice · 26/05/2026 16:55

M&S sizing has always been inconsistent.
About 20 years ago I bought 4 tops from the same M&S at the same time and they all fitted me perfectly.
The labels said they were 4 different sizes!

Tryagain26 · 26/05/2026 16:56

I think the sizing is very inconsistent and the only reason why you can really know if anything fits is by trying it on

NancyJoan · 26/05/2026 16:58

I haven’t noticed it getting smaller (or bigger), but inconsistent sizing is, well, consistent across all brands.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 26/05/2026 16:58

Inconsistent sizing. I often take the size up and size down into the changing rooms for M&S clothes. Most annoying!

Buscobel · 26/05/2026 16:58

It depends on where the item was manufactured. I have trousers that are ostensibly the same size, but if you put them together, the difference is massive. Even if they’re supposed to be from the same manufacturer, it doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get two garments with the same size label, that are actually the same size.

gerispringer · 26/05/2026 16:59

I was always 10/12 in Marks but recently bought some cotton joggers in a 12 which were a good fit but shrunk after a wash and were uncomfortable. Took them back for a size 14 which are now perfect. I also bought a size large in Primark linen trousers when I would normally go for a medium as I know they skimp on fabric and they will almost certainly shrink .

Wickedlittledancer · 26/05/2026 17:00

I don’t buy their clothes as they just never fit right.

im a size 8 everywhere, and size 8s in m and s, often are too tight on waist and massive round the arse and thighs, and make me look really mishapen with a muffin top.

I ordered some jeans a few weeks ago and had to send back. The only person who would have fit them is a size 6 waisted woman with a size 12 arse. I then tried some trousers on in store and I had the same issue. Looked like I was wearing some form of clown trouser.Bought some jeans from H&M that everyone was saying were too small in the reviews and they fit perfectly. So I know it’s not me.

BotterMon · 26/05/2026 17:00

I find their stuff bigger than the size they give. However the gusset on their knickers is now microsize and bloody uncomfortable.

SparrowFeet · 26/05/2026 17:03

The size chart has definitely changed in the last month or so. Have a look. A 10 is now a 27.5inch waist and I think it used to be 29. A 12 is now 29.5 waist and 39.5 hips.
I think it's more in line now with 'proper' sizing whereas like you say in the past M&S used to come up larger.

likelysuspect · 26/05/2026 17:04

Well.

Ive kept this quiet for a long time because I noticed that I keep being a tight 12 or 14 in M+S yet reading from everyone else that they 'come up big' and yet Im a loose 10 or 12 in other stores, so I wondered why it was different for me.

Now I know!

YassQweeennn · 26/05/2026 17:18

Well this is really interesting!! So my suspicions were right!

Theredjellybean · 26/05/2026 17:20

Opposite here...am size 10 reliably most brands...m and s have had to go down to size 6 in jeans

Allmarbleslost · 26/05/2026 18:03

I find them really inconsistent. I can't buy anything there without trying on because I ahead no clue what size I will need.

Arlanymor · 26/05/2026 18:16

I have no idea, but you did inspire me with your YABU to start an ode called 'Markslife'...

Confidence is a beige cardigan
Buttoned up as I wait for the doors to open
Got a 'Gastro Pub Dine In' deal for two
And a scented candle for the downstairs loo

I get up when I want
Except on Thursday
When I exit the house early
For the yellow label discounts

I put on my socks with sandals
And wander through menswear... slowly...

It gives me an enormous sense of
Wellbeing...
And then I’m happy for the rest of the day
Safe in the knowledge that Percy Pigs are in stock

Markslife!

I shop at Marks because the fit is forgiving
Elastic waistband... hey, now that’s living!
Three-for-two on all the men's pants
And the lady on the till has excellent bantz...
(Although mainly about posh crisps and crumpets)

Markslife!

It’s got a bakery
And tiny pork pies
Ten types of teacakes
A sight for sore eyes!
Colin the Caterpillar has never been bettered
You can buy him at the same time as a nice chunky sweater.

All the people
So many people
And they all go hand-in-hand
Hand-in-hand through their....

Markslife!

Doesn't quite scan but hey. It's been a hot day and I am feeling very silly.

Dunnocantthinkofone · 26/05/2026 18:19

You can take 3 pairs of the exact same size into the changing rooms and have them fit entirely different - size labels seem totally meaningless a lot of the time now

Alwayswonderedwhy · 26/05/2026 18:22

Just inconsistent I think. I bought a size smaller trousers recently.

BillieWiper · 26/05/2026 18:23

I think they're usually considered to come up big but the thing is now I think each garment is different.

It could be that your overall weight is the same but you've got a bit more fat/muscle on top or bottom half to make you wider in certain areas?

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 26/05/2026 18:23

I’m finding I have size down, especially in trousers. I used to buy a 10. Now I’m having to size down to an 8.
