Is M&S getting smaller or am I getting bigger?

I've always been an M&S size 12 and if anything sometimes that's on the big side. Really like a lot of the bits they have in store at the moment but size 12 no longer fits and I need a 14. I don't think I am any bigger than normal and the scales would suggest the same, maybe I am though.

Is anyone else finding they no longer fit into their usual M&S size and need to size up?

You are being unreasonable = I need to cut down on my porklife mate get some exercise

You are NOT being unreasonable = shrinkflation at play at M&S

I have no idea, but you did inspire me with your YABU to start an ode called 'Markslife'...

Confidence is a beige cardigan
Buttoned up as I wait for the doors to open
Got a 'Gastro Pub Dine In' deal for two
And a scented candle for the downstairs loo

I get up when I want
Except on Thursday
When I exit the house early
For the yellow label discounts

I put on my socks with sandals
And wander through menswear... slowly...

It gives me an enormous sense of
Wellbeing...
And then I’m happy for the rest of the day
Safe in the knowledge that Percy Pigs are in stock

I shop at Marks because the fit is forgiving
Elastic waistband... hey, now that’s living!
Three-for-two on all the men's pants
And the lady on the till has excellent bantz...
(Although mainly about posh crisps and crumpets)

Markslife!

It’s got a bakery
And tiny pork pies
Ten types of teacakes
A sight for sore eyes!
Colin the Caterpillar has never been bettered
You can buy him at the same time as a nice chunky sweater.

All the people
So many people
And they all go hand-in-hand
Hand-in-hand through their....

Doesn't quite scan but hey. It's been a hot day and I am feeling very silly.

I can hear Phil Whatsisname saying this as I read it 🤩

I've found M&S to be huge for years, I need an 8 in everything, and often that's big, except knickers where I need a 12. If they're making sizes more realisitc, that's a good thing IMO.

LetsMakeThisMomentLast · 26/05/2026 18:26

A woman has appeared on my Facebook Reels a couple of times talking about M&S jeans sizing. She has always been a 14 and now needs a 16, despite not having gained weight or inches. This is a very recent change apparently. I think she might have said she was going to ask M&S about it. I have no idea if it’s true because I’ve put on a shit ton of weight anyway😬😅

Aww, thanks! Well M&S is 150 in 2034... maybe he could sing it then as an anniversary anthem?!

Exhorseygirl · 26/05/2026 18:28

They’ve definitely shrunk in recent times.

Every Christmas my kids buy me a pack of their basic long sleeved jersey cotton pyjamas. I have multiple sets, all coming up about the same size.

i was given another set Christmas just gone, thought they felt more fitted- I like them baggy. I laid them against the old sets and they were several inches narrower. Exactly the same size on the label. I sent them back.

notnorman · 26/05/2026 18:29

They’ve recently changed their sizing- I read about it somewhere

aquitodavia · 26/05/2026 18:29

I think their underwear has definitely got smaller, including bras - I've recently struggled to fit into my normal sizes despite having the same sizes at home which fit fine. I don't know if that's across the board and I think their sizing is very inconsistent generally.

padampada · 26/05/2026 18:32

Something has changed with their jeans. I have lots of m and s jeans at home which are size 10 but any new ones in store are smaller. I cant pull them over my bum but then the next size are loose round the waist. I think its a different style which is emphasising everyone's gym bum! Frustrating as I just want to get what I've had before. Im posting in the hope someone from m and s is reading!

Hellometime · 26/05/2026 18:34

I think m & s sizing is on generous side.

dizzydizzydizzy · 26/05/2026 18:34

I bought 2 pairs for shorts from them recently - one a 14, the a 16 and both fit snugly.

StillStayingStill · 26/05/2026 18:35

I ordered jeans, trousers and a couple of dresses last week in my usual size and in a size down as I known M&S can come up big. Even the smaller size was too big in all but one dress. There sizing is ridiculously big. Next is another one that comes up really big.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 26/05/2026 18:35

I find it inconsistent, so a size 14 in one style of trousers is fine, jeans in the same size, too small.

Cheersmedears123 · 26/05/2026 18:36

I’ve been finding they come up very small at M&S. I can hardly get their size 10 past my thighs and yet everywhere else I fit into a size 10 with room to spare.

VintageLane · 26/05/2026 18:38

I bought 2 pairs of barrel leg jeans in my usual 12. The cream pair fit perfectly, the black pair are massive. So annoying.

I saw a plus size influencer on Instagram saying their 14s no longer fit her and she has to have 16s.

Thatoneisnice · 26/05/2026 18:40

Oh i think its getting bigger personally!!
I bought some stuff in a size 8 from there recently. No way am i actually a size 8! Im a 12 really
Back in the day i remember getting a size 14 skirt from M&S when i was 13 years old and being mortified i was an adult size 14. I was 5ft 6 and 10st. Thats exactly what i am now too 20 years later, and ive just bought a load of stuff in size 8!!
The sizing has definately got bigger over time

Allseeingallknowing · 26/05/2026 18:42

BotterMon · 26/05/2026 17:00

I find their stuff bigger than the size they give. However the gusset on their knickers is now microsize and bloody uncomfortable.

Yes and I want to know why. I emailed them and they didn’t answer. A pant liner doesn’t fit properly, twists up and is uncomfortable.

Blundl · 26/05/2026 18:44

A lot of posters mentioned it on a recent M&S thread, especially about the jeans

socks1107 · 26/05/2026 18:53

It’s the opposite for me I think. I wear a size 8/10 mostly in marks stuff but a 10/12 in other places

FebruaryUsername · 26/05/2026 18:55

I've found this the other way, usually can buy an 8 to a 10 at m&s and recently the 8s have been too big

fetchacloth · 26/05/2026 19:05

As others have said the sizing is inconsistent, far more than it used to be that's for sure.
Recently I returned a bra which was nowhere near big enough at the back but the cups were enormous, totally out of proportion 🙄.
I also ordered a multipack of knickers which I previously ordered about 6 months ago but when I unpacked them I noticed that the gussets were narrower than previous knickers. They're just about okay but these are supposed to be full size briefs not thongs!

MabelAnderson · 26/05/2026 19:07

MrsJPBP · 26/05/2026 16:55

M&S have recently changed their sizing I believe, to be more in line with other retailers (historically they’ve always been pretty generous on sizing). So no, it’s not you!

Yes their sizing has just changed and the clothes are smaller. It still varies from garment to garment though. The sizing isn’t all that consistent, particularly in trousers for some reason.

Savvysix1984 · 26/05/2026 19:14

I have the opppsite. Tried two different tops on last week. One a small and the other a 10 and both were too big. I’m not an 8 or XS anywhere else.

UniquePinkSwan · 26/05/2026 19:16

Their sizes are getting bigger. I bought a size 8 pair of jeans as the 10 was a bit baggy and they are the exact same size as the 10. Ridiculous

greglet · 26/05/2026 19:30

I’ve always enjoyed being an 8 in M&S (in the full knowledge that their sizing is very generous and I’m a 10 anywhere else) but in the last couple of months I seem to have become a 10. I put it down to being postpartum but my pre-pregnancy size 8 jeans fit perfectly again so I don’t think it is (entirely) that.

Strandas · 26/05/2026 19:30

I’ve found their shoes are huge!! I’m definitely a 5, occasionally a 4.5, but had to get a 4 and they’re still on the roomy side!

I have a pair of linen trousers from a couple of years ago and they are a 10 and on the tight side. The pair I tried on last week (very similar style), were huge and had to get an 8 - I am not an 8! The jeans on the other hand, varied so much (I had heard good things about their jeans), but all the styles I tried looked awful and were tight and baggy in all the wrong places.
