Really? She lived with this guy and didn't know? She had a camper van parked on the drive and didn't know he stole the money to buy it?

I don't buy it.

To be fair, every duty solicitor advises their client to adopt the ‘no comment’ approach in all interviews under caution (English terminology). Yes, I have been arrested and detained in custody for 21 hours on a false allegation.

The absolute shocking lack of governance of their own party really brings into question how they can run the country. Explains a lot I suppose. No wonder it was delayed until after the election, although the party faithful will find ways to explain it all away, in their own heads anyway.

for a party who go on about corruption in Westminster, they are fairly corrupt themselves. No wonder I struggle to vote these days.

Did NS not think that was a rather large amount of cash for a man with his salary to have?

Its not a overly huge amount of money.
If you think about it they were both earning big money.
No kids (expensive creatures)

Fair point about having no children. I was thinking my dh earns about 150k and there is no way we have that kind of cash lying around but we do have three dcs!

She’s absolutely lying as usual. “Why is there a brand new Mercedes in the garage?” “How come there’s a £130k camper van on the driveway?” “I just went in the kitchen. Where did the £3k designer coffee machine come from? “What is a solid gold £3k Mont Blanc fountain pen doing on the desk? Who gave you that?! And so it goes on and on for 10 years. Nicola Sturgeon is up to her neck in it.

For the SNP, it shows you they shouldn’t be anywhere near government if they can’t even track mega sums going out of their accounts for 10 years and nobody checking anything and nobody caring. Imagine if they ruled Scotland and hundreds of billions nobody knew were lost disappearing embezzled whilst people on the street homeless. Frightening!

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 27/05/2026 21:23

I know it sounds strange but I do think there’s a possibility she wasn’t aware of what was going on. Not all couples live in each others pockets. She was a very busy woman so maybe she didn’t pay attention to domestic issues. Some of the things he bought were so bizarre. Would you question a pair of Lalique condiment grinders or would you think maybe they came from Woolworths (they certainly look as if they did). She also may have believed he was richer than he actually was when she married him. If she thought he had assets to start with she wouldn’t be surprised if he told her he was merely spending his (considerable) income. He might have been continuing a long established pattern of overspending.
OK I understand why most people think she must have known but I do think there is reasonable doubt on this one.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/05/2026 21:27

I might not immediately assume that the salt and pepper grinders were expensive Lalique ones, @Nothavingagoodvalentinesday - but jewellery, an expensive coffee machine, posh handbags, expensive pens, fast car, luxury motor home - at some point you’d surely look at the whole lot and wonder where the money had come from. Especially if people were raising concerns about the Party funding your husband controls.

If you take into account that the car and motor home were “explained” separately (I think one disguised as a lease car/company car, and the other the story was that it had been bought as a campaign mobile HQ?) then there is about £200k to account for over 12 years.

That’s about £1,400 per month.

Yes, that is a lot of money, but if you are on £200k salary then your net monthly take home is already about £10k per month.

Would people definitely notice if their partner’s take home pay was 14% more than they had expected? Particularly if they had completely separate finances?

I still think the party governance structure was seriously wrong, but I think it’s completely plausible that she didn’t know.

I WOULD NEVER QUESTION A PAIR O GRINDRS

If my husband kept coming home wth multiple versions of expensive crap, I'd get him to a psychotherapist sharpish. Sounds like OCD to me.

Does OCD in this context stand for Offensively Corrupt Duo

Asking a notoriously tight-fisted Scotsman how come there were regular Harrods bags and boxes being delivered. Acting like that’s normal. Sturgeon supposedly intelligent never asked one question at all in 10 years of regular tat being delivered. How on earth do you explain away a Mercedes in the garage & a top of the range motorhome? Huge designer coffee machine taking up half the counter top when she knows he’s on a crappy low grade salary.

Have you won the lottery? Are you having an affair with an heiress? Do you have some mysterious non-existent mega loaded relative who is throwing money at you? HOW IS THIS MULTIMILLIONAIRE CELEB LIFESTYLE BEING FUNDED?!

The whole business stinks to high heaven.

When the 'woven through the accounts' business was originally put forward as an explanation for the disappearance of the referendum campaign money, my heart sank. Taken all together, the evidence suggests that NS is either corrupt or incompetent.

At one point, I was saddened. Now I'm bloody furious.

So far as the camper van is concerned, if she genuinely had no idea that it was sitting on her MIL's driveway until 2023, that just adds weight to the notion that her marriage was one of convenience and that she didn't trust her party or the Scottish people. If she did know about the campervan, then...

I wouldn’t have thought so. They’re both high earners, don’t have kids, and whilst I obviously don’t know about inheritances it wasn’t that long after his dad died. So it doesn’t seem like a crazy amount of money

As pp have said, many, many times, this wasn't a regular couple doing different jobs that the other didn't understand. They were controlling the SNP and NS is a shrewd woman, not someone who doesn't understand her husband's job or quite what he earns.

I would love to know how long it took the journalist to find the old map of Calderpark Zoo, overlay it to the housing estate and excitedly find that the Sturgeon/Murrell house stands where the Cheetah enclosure stood.

I haven't seen it but I'm guessing the headline was "home to a pair of old cheetahs" or similar?!
