That it is ridiculous to refer to an 11 & 8 year old as 'babas'

My DSis refers to her kids these ages as 'the babas'. My kids are a similar age and I never refer to them as this. This is the same DSis that allows the 8 year old have a dummy and sees nothing wrong with it 🙄 my DM also refers to them as this 'Oh X said she is calling in later with the babas!' It just gives me a massive ick. AIBU

This just makes me think of Neil. The Baby. Now a hulking great teenager!

BinNightTonight · 24/05/2026 20:10

I think its harmless. An 8 year old having a dummy however, is not...

PicknStick · 24/05/2026 20:11

@Travelfairy I think babas is okay. I don’t think the dummy is though. Does he have problems with his teeth?

My cousin had a dummy until 9. She ended up with buck teeth which took braces 4 years to correct.

DuaneBarry · 24/05/2026 20:12

I sometimes call my dog baba or baby. Obviously, being 13 and a dog she is not in any way a baby, but it’s just a term of endearment. No big deal.

Arlanymor · 24/05/2026 19:58

My mum still calls me 'chickie' - I am 47. Is that allowed?

I love that.
My dad had a nickname for me that only he ever called me. Now he's not here and I'm never getting called that name again I realise how
lovely it is to just have your own special nickname and how lucky I was.

PicknStick · 24/05/2026 20:13

I heard my DH call our 15 yo ‘pickle’ today!

He was just being affectionate.

I’m live in the Black Country and children are refered to as “the bab” until they are quite old.

My in laws will say, “does the bab want to come to visit” when refering to my 13 year old.

Indeed. Like “Neil, the baby” in G&S.

TheyGrewUp · 24/05/2026 20:16

We all dd "the baby". She's 28!

Evaka · 24/05/2026 20:17

My dad still sometimes referred to us as his babies when we were in our 30s. My sister sometimes calls her 11 and 13 yos the babies. It's sweet and doting.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 24/05/2026 20:32

Mine are 21 and 18 and are "the bairns". Even when they’re 40 they’ll still be the bairns! My 18 year old recently got his first tattoo and I dramatically declared that "my baby has been defiled" 😂

chirrupybird · 24/05/2026 20:35

Just the original name carried on as they've got older, not a big deal. No to the dummy though.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 24/05/2026 20:48

Not a mum, but I think it's quite sweet when I've heard it used😳.

NotSmallButFunSize · 24/05/2026 20:50

I generally hate the use of "babba" or "bubba" for kids, regardless of age - every other person is wanging on with it at the park, makes me 🤮

So YANBU

itsgettingweird · 24/05/2026 20:58

I referred to my ds as my baby boy the other day.

He's 21 🤣🤣

ThatLilacTiger · 24/05/2026 21:15

I refer to my young kids as babbies (with two Bs) or baby boy / girl because it's a cute affectation that's carried over from when they were actually babies. They'll be my baby boy and girl for the rest of time so no harm calling them that. I think it's fine and if someone took issue with it I'd think less of them.

Yes teeth in an awful way. She said she thinks its 'cute' he still uses one. His speech is also affected. She just wont be told......even by dentist 🤷‍♀️

DD used to call pigs ‘babas’ when she was a toddler. She couldn’t pronounce ‘Peppa’, so it was Baba, then all pigs just became babas. It was so cute!

That's lovely, I love it when kids inadvertently rename stuff with something adorable.

Go no contact. That’s fucking disgraceful. 🤬 consider reporting to social services

HoppityBun · 24/05/2026 21:23

A friend of mine refers to her 10 year old daughter as “the little one”. She’s an only child and by no stretch of the imagination is she little.

It makes me smile inside and I know that she’s the apple of her mother’s eye.

WhatNextImScared · 24/05/2026 21:27

I agree the dummy is not good. The pet name? Couldn’t get upset about it.

Is there something else going on here? Eg is he very hard to support/sooth due to neurodivergence, a trauma, etc?
