That it is ridiculous to refer to an 11 & 8 year old as 'babas'

Travelfairy · 24/05/2026 19:53

My DSis refers to her kids these ages as 'the babas'. My kids are a similar age and I never refer to them as this. This is the same DSis that allows the 8 year old have a dummy and sees nothing wrong with it 🙄 my DM also refers to them as this 'Oh X said she is calling in later with the babas!' It just gives me a massive ick. AIBU

My four year old is still known as Baba between my partner and I. It's a little sweet affectionate name. Couldn't care less what anyone makes of that. She will always be Baba in my heart. PFB and no more as I'm too old now.

LarksAscending · 24/05/2026 21:32

Baba means shit where I’m from. Does she mean it in that way or as in ‘babies’? I think your kids are your babies forever so couldn’t get worked up about that usage.

I think thats fine as a localised pet name. This is just ridiculous constantly referring to kids as babies in one way or another and keeping them as such. They use baby talk all day, can I have a 'dinky' instead of drink, din dins instead of dinner. Its just so irritating

Ok this is totally different. Calling someone a babyish term in the abstract is very different from using baby words to actually interact. I had someone ask a 4 year old to say 'ta ta' to me the other day and my jaw dropped. I can only hope there is another baby at home and the dad was immediately mortified. Yes I agree OP this is strange and really bad for the kids. I also remember the dummy discussion. Those kids will learn the hard way eventually and they won't thank her

Wonderlandpeony · 24/05/2026 21:40

My sister still calls her daughter of 23 bunny or bun. I have to bite my tongue when I hear her do it.

You seem to get what I mean! Its a combination of all these things. I genuinely think she has some mental health issues or even an intellectual disability. She wont do what most parents would for their kids but is so stubborn and aggressive if you try question anything....

I have a friend who calls her nearly six year old baba, which I don’t like so YANBU. I just don’t like the word.

It’s actually child abuse to allow his teeth to get in such a bad way OP. And of course hindering his speech development. You should tell her this!

Should the school have further concerns they’ll end up reporting her to SS.

That's interesting @LarksAscending - Yorkshire? Japan?
In Arabic it means Dad/Daddy.

My mum still calls me 'chickie' - I am 47. Is that allowed?

That’s so sweet, love it 💕

Edit: I call my mid 20s DS and DD my little lovelies. They just smile indulgently and roll their eyes Grin

ToffeePennie · 24/05/2026 22:06

I call my 8 year old “the baby” ie; my mums having the baby so can your dad have big ‘un?
or sometimes “come here baby, now tell me about x,y or z”

MayasJamas · 24/05/2026 22:08

Me and my partner call our kids ‘the babies’. They are teenagers. So obviously I think YABU!

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 24/05/2026 22:15

My 100 year old granny used to call my dad 'Baba!'. He was nearly 80 when she died!

I have! But I know nothing and 'each to their own' is the response I get

Would Bambinos be better OP? But only if it's said in Martin Goodman Friday Night Dinner style, obviously.

Well she can say that when SS comes knocking at the door. See how well that goes down!

pinkstripeycat · 24/05/2026 22:27

I know a family who refer to their 20yr old son as Baba. They had a son 2yrs older than baba. Baba then had a younger sister but they still carried on calling him Baba. Odd

BinNightTonight · 24/05/2026 22:29

Is she the one who like dips the dummy in something random (honey?) Or am I mistaken?

Wingingit73 · 24/05/2026 22:30

Its your problem though. You can have the ick but she doesnt have to change.

TigerDroveAgain · 24/05/2026 22:30

I call my 24 year old DS ‘Mr Baby’

SconehengeRevenge · 24/05/2026 22:32

Peterdottir · 24/05/2026 20:00

My Mum refers to me and my sister together as 'the girls'. We are 54 and 52 :-)

So does mine and we're both older than you.

I call DD my baby.
She turns 25 later this year

PashaMinaMio · 24/05/2026 22:34

I hope she doesn’t get a dog. It’ll be “fur babbie.” Ick, ick!!

Me and exdh call our adult fully functioning dss babies. Especially youngest. We're a bit bonkers though. Dh just rolls his eyes.

grrrlatrix · 24/05/2026 22:40

I am “pet lamb”. I’m 45.
My adult sons are “the boys”.
My school age niece and nephew are “the babies” because they are the youngest grandchildren. 🤷‍♀️
