That it is ridiculous to refer to an 11 & 8 year old as 'babas'

My DSis refers to her kids these ages as 'the babas'. My kids are a similar age and I never refer to them as this. This is the same DSis that allows the 8 year old have a dummy and sees nothing wrong with it 🙄 my DM also refers to them as this 'Oh X said she is calling in later with the babas!' It just gives me a massive ick. AIBU

I called ds my little bubsyboobaa today. He’s 14 and 5’11. It’s just a silly term of endearment when I thanked him for bringing us ice creams into the garden. The little nicknames and things I can’t get worked up about but the dummy at 8 is nuts if there aren’t any additional needs, are they having it just at bedtime or going to school with it?

landlordhell · 24/05/2026 22:47

Terms of endearment = fine. I call my DD 22 bubba.
Dummy at 8= no way

That's interesting @LarksAscending - Yorkshire? Japan?
In Arabic it means Dad/Daddy.

Definitely not in Yorkshire.

Whenever he is upset. He also calls it a do-do. My do-do, my do-do 🙈🙈 its actually shocking but my DM feeds into it too. I'm the bad guy, sure he's only 'a baba'

Definitely not in Yorkshire.

Apparently, around Hull @OnGoldenPond

My mum still calls me 'chickie' - I am 47. Is that allowed?

Oh that’s so sweet. I call my DD16 this, along with all kinds of other silly names!

thinkingaboutipswich · 24/05/2026 23:52

Oh and I cal her twin brother “Puppy”. It’s very easy to infantilise twins especially if you don’t have any younger children.

OP I can’t get past the dummy no matter what your sister is calling the child.

Flaskfan · 25/05/2026 00:01

Baba is common round here. I hate it though.
I have friends who refer to themselves (online) as 'momma' or 'mama' which annoys me, because it's totally lifted from social media. We're a mum/ mam place. No one ever, ever used momma or mama growing up, so it's not like it's a tradition.

Ok this is totally different. Calling someone a babyish term in the abstract is very different from using baby words to actually interact. I had someone ask a 4 year old to say 'ta ta' to me the other day and my jaw dropped. I can only hope there is another baby at home and the dad was immediately mortified. Yes I agree OP this is strange and really bad for the kids. I also remember the dummy discussion. Those kids will learn the hard way eventually and they won't thank her

Now this doesn't seem weird to me, because adults use it. Usually 'ta ta rwan' though.

ZenNudist · 25/05/2026 00:09

I call 12yo and 15yo babe or baby

Remindmeofthebabee · 25/05/2026 00:16

Baba gives me the ick regardless of age.

Ladamesansmerci · 25/05/2026 00:18

Who cares?

My girl is only 2, but I think I'll still be calling her 'the baby' when she's 40 :D

coneyislandoldspot · 25/05/2026 00:19

Not your circus not your monkeys

Yellowcakestand · 25/05/2026 00:26

My sister and I are still known in our family as 'the girs'. We are in our 40s now. Its an affectionate term

Namechangeforthusone11 · 25/05/2026 02:32

Aww, my dad still calls me baba and I'm early 30's with my own children 😅

My son is "the bairn" he is 19. Agree the dummy is a problem.

My kids are the 'weans'. and sometimes the the bairns".

delicioussoo · 25/05/2026 03:50

Unclench

Natsku · 25/05/2026 03:55

I still call my 8 year old Baby, as does his big sister, though I try to use his name when I'm talking to him in front of his friends!

Dummy at 8 and baby talk still is weird though (though bananas are still babanas in our house due to toddler mispronunciation but that's different to actual baby talk)

Just run your own race

NellB1960 · 25/05/2026 10:28

They're not your kids. Get over it

My Mum refers to me and my sister together as 'the girls'. We are 54 and 52 :-)

My Mum did this with me and my 4 sisters "my girls" right up until the time she died.

tiramisugelato · 25/05/2026 10:53

My dad still calls me “little one” and I’m 37 🤣
