Unable to open windows as people back of me smoking cannabis. Selfish *****

During hot weather, I open my windows before the sun hits it.

Came back from shopping and the direction of the windows I was planning to open, people in the garden on the other side of the wall are smoking cannabis. Oh great! I don’t want to have the smell of that vile stuff wafting in my home. I’m sure the varieties used now are more pungent. As my ex smoked it and the smell didn’t affect me

Live in a first floor flat

Where else should they smoke it then? Bit hypocritical for you to be fine when your ex smoked it but now you have a issue. Yabu.

So people in a house near your 1st floor flat are smoking? Correct? Only an absolute mentalist would think they can control what their neighbours can do. In your position I’d move to a house if affordable. If not you’ll have to shut your windows (cheapest solution).

fairislecable · 23/05/2026 09:44

Would it be possible to set up a fan to blow the air from inside your flat to outside thereby giving them back their smelly smoke.

Summersongroses · 23/05/2026 09:45

I had this last night with one of my neighbours’ sons (he’s 20 ish I think). Only smokes in the garden when his mum is away…. It’s infuriating and I HATE it but there is nothing I can do. I just had to close the back windows. Keep the front windows open and be baking hot! I actually looked it up why it smells so strong these days compared to 20 years ago. It’s all to do with it being farmed inside instead of outside. Growing it Inside increases something specific in it making it more pungent and “skunky”. I sympathise it’s really not nice but what can you do.

youalright · 23/05/2026 09:46

So many people on this site seem to have such a strong sense of smell. Their outside how much is the smell really going to drift.

Myskyscolour · 23/05/2026 09:47

I have the same with cigarette smell but they only smoke for 5-10min at a time, so not the end of the world

Gabitule · 23/05/2026 09:48

Sorry op, that’s really annoying, especially when it’s prolonged. I agree with another poster who suggested using a fan, but I guess you wanted to open the windows as an alternative to using a fan which uses electricity.

PoppieCock · 23/05/2026 09:48

It stinks and it's absolutely horrible but you have no more control over it than you would over cigarette smoke or BBQs.

You could try speaking to them although I know that's not the Mumsnet way.

I find a lot of people have very low sense of smell. They can’t smell their own BO, or the reek of cigarettes, or weed.

TheKittenswithMittens · 23/05/2026 09:50

The smell itself doesn't bother me, it's the vibe "Scummy neighbourhood"

Growingaseed · 23/05/2026 09:50

Is it worth a chat with them? We have new neighbours who are doing the same and I'm plucking up the courage to mention it.

Its annoying because if the windows are already open the smell gets in before you know they are doing it.

My neighbour smokes it inside, inside his own house and I cannot use 2 of the rooms in my house after about 7pm as they absolutely reek. It would come a window far easier. I do have a strong sense of smell but DHs is terrible and he has changed his relaxing evening bath to a quick shower because the bathroom is virtually unusable. People like to minimise weed use/smell in here but it’s utterly vile.

Does your neighbour drive? If he is a regular user he will test positive in the morning on a roadside drugs test. The limits for weed are very low. Do you know his route? Can you report him to the police?
I hate the smell of weed and it travels everywhere.
A friend lived in a flat and her toilet was leaking onto the flat below. She refused to do anything about it until the person had stopped smoking weed for a while.

You could report it - it's not legal even in your own home in UK.

I'd go for the option above though and try to fan it back outside.

It really does drift, it absolutely stinks i have at least 3 weed smokers in my street and it does waft into the house. I don't know why the op is getting a hard time i suspect weed smokers and they don't care where the smoke and smell goes.

BCBird · 23/05/2026 11:08

It would annoy me. I don't think it's unreasonable to be annoyed about this. It's anti social IMO. If there is a garden, why can't they move away from the building? They not doing it inside, but u don't want it inside your flat.

I agree that people are ridiculous on here, but tbf, weed being smoked outside your window is going to be obvious

Ablondiebutagoody · 23/05/2026 11:13

I quite like the smell. Reminds me of the good old days

We have reported these people to the police, school, council, environmental health and social services. Zero success. Nothing ever happens. The weed in my bathroom is the tip of the iceberg with them.

Because people in “non scummy” areas never smoke weed 🙄

hahabahbag · 23/05/2026 11:25

If my neighbour was smoking an illegal substance I’d be basically spamming the local police and my mp until something was done, it’s illegal therefore we shouldn’t have to put up with it! It has happened to me and I put in a complaint to the council cc’ing my mp (who owned the house) they moved within the month. Thankfully my neighbours don’t even smoke tobacco (and the son of my neighbours is in the doghouse because he once did smoke cannabis on the balcony when his parents were away, he’s not repeated it!)!

we don’t have to put up with illegal activities

My area is average not particularly "scummy" imo it is everywhere now.
