Unable to open windows as people back of me smoking cannabis. Selfish *****

During hot weather, I open my windows before the sun hits it.

Came back from shopping and the direction of the windows I was planning to open, people in the garden on the other side of the wall are smoking cannabis. Oh great! I don’t want to have the smell of that vile stuff wafting in my home. I’m sure the varieties used now are more pungent. As my ex smoked it and the smell didn’t affect me

Live in a first floor flat

My area is average not particularly "scummy" imo it is everywhere now.

That was my point, silly of her to think its just in “scummy areas” Like Sebastian and Arabella from Knightsbridge don’t get high.

The smell itself doesn't bother me, it's the vibe "Scummy neighbourhood"

Tell that to all the god knows how many million pound houses in Hackney, Notting Hill, Clapham, Islington, Camden, I just think it smells like London.

Overtheatlantic · 23/05/2026 11:43

Could it be medicinal? My SIL has MS and smokes it all day.

So many people on this site seem to have such a strong sense of smell. Their outside how much is the smell really going to drift.

So what if some people do have a strong sense of smell? It doesn't mean that their opinion is less valid.
I am with OP, last night we had the loft window open, (second floor up) and the weed smell coming in from the street outside was so strong that even DH with his hayfever-blocked nose complained about it. It does seem much stronger these days.

ChocolateApples · 23/05/2026 11:46

Our neighbour do it too and it's so annoying. Right near my bathroom window. I love having doors open at this time of year, the air just feels and smells so nice. And then someone lights up. And when it's 8 in the morning I feel that's even more unreasonable.

Renataz · 23/05/2026 10:34

it’s vile. stinks.
my friend spoke to her neighbour downstairs to say she was dating a cop and just letting him know ss hed smell the smell in her house and out back so best to not smoke it around here mate. it all stopped. no repercussions. result.

This is genius.

Meadowfinch · 23/05/2026 11:55

Keep an eye on them.and then report them for dealing. 😊

So lie to the police and waste their time?

You're kidding. The smell is really pungent and a vile stench..

Woodywasatwatt · 23/05/2026 12:01

I sympathise.

My neighbours both sides smoke weed most of the day. And as soon as the sun comes out, the neighbours over the back start playing Bon Jovi at full volume and screaming at each other.

It was lovely outside last night, but sitting in the garden wasn’t exactly relaxing.

My area is very scummy though, so it’s all totally normal for here.

TheKittenswithMittens · 23/05/2026 12:02

They do "balloons" round my way, even scummier than weed.

Woodywasatwatt · 23/05/2026 12:04

gwrbakes · 23/05/2026 09:51

My neighbour smokes it inside, inside his own house and I cannot use 2 of the rooms in my house after about 7pm as they absolutely reek. It would come a window far easier. I do have a strong sense of smell but DHs is terrible and he has changed his relaxing evening bath to a quick shower because the bathroom is virtually unusable. People like to minimise weed use/smell in here but it’s utterly vile.

We have the same. We have a shared chimney breast and the smell of them smoking weed in their back bedroom comes through to ours. They also did a DIY loft bedroom, so when you go in our loft the smell hits you. We had to stop storing stuff up there as the smell permeated everything.

It’s gross.

TheKittenswithMittens · 23/05/2026 12:05

The kids drive around on "balloons" because the Police have yet to invent a roadside test for nitrous oxide. Unlike weed, which they have a test for.

It really does drift, it absolutely stinks i have at least 3 weed smokers in my street and it does waft into the house. I don't know why the op is getting a hard time i suspect weed smokers and they don't care where the smoke and smell goes.

Weed smokers will almost certainly not be bothered about their anti social behaviour, after all, they're contributing to money laundering and organised crime and all the other misery within the drugs supply chain including modern slavery etc. If they don't care about the human misery they're causing by buying the stuff, they won't be bothered by a bit of smell annoying the neighbours.

I think it needs legalising, controlling and taxing.

Throwntothewolves · 23/05/2026 12:14

CieloElmers · 23/05/2026 11:24

Because people in “non scummy” areas never smoke weed 🙄

Generally not in their back garden because it's not socially accceptable (and illegal) despite what the disingenuous replies on this thread seem to suggest.
YANBU OP, some of the responses on this thread are ridiculous

Hmm I have a friend who smokes it regularly but doesn't contribute to any of the things you are going on about. .

So where do they smoke it then? In their smoking rooms with their smoking jackets on?

I haven’t agreed the smell is pleasant or that I don’t feel sorry for OP, it’s just ridiculous to think only people in “scummy areas” smoke weed.

In their houses, and their friends houses, if they do it at all.
I agree that weed, or drug use in general, isn't confined to 'scummy' areas (what defines a 'scummy' area anyway?)
As far as I can tell weed isn't the main drug of choice in 'nice' areas, maybe in part because the smell gives their habit away, and that wouldn't go with the image

Yeah you are right,

Blueper · 23/05/2026 12:32

I wish the government would be clearer on this. If it's illegal, they need to be arresting all these stinky people! Or, they need to legalise it. At the moment everywhere stinks of weed (yes it is MUCH stronger smelling than I remember from my mispent youth 🤣) but it just sits in this grey area for reporting and has become normalised.

Same here! I live in Social Housing and I’m the odd one out - you’re not normal here unless you’re taking your bong out to the car park, sitting in your car with the doors wide open for a few hours, getting stoned with your music blaring full blast, or standing by the communal windows on the landing thinking that because you’re near a window the smoke is all going outside, and then the best bit is, they all get in their cars and drive, sometimes with the kids in there too!

I defy anyone to say that weed is harmless, when you’ve lived in SH for as long as I have and have seen the absolute damage this drug can do, you’d have a very different opinion.
