Would you give me the replacement chips?

Im with a group of mum friends at a food court. We all go off to different kiosks. Order our food. We find an available table.

I order from a Thai cuisine, a noodle dish and some chips for the little one.

I pick up the food, put toddler in highchair, put the chips infront of her. I’m about to take my first serving of noodles and baby kicks the chips all over the floor.

The chips cost £5. One of the mums says that it’s been less than 5 mins and they didn’t touch the chips, I should be able to ask for a replacement.

So I go to the kiosk, politely explain that I was just here and the baby annoyingly dropped all the chips. I show them the picture (we are sitting on the other end of the food court).

They say no. But I plead a little bit - I do have a soft voice so I’m being nice. Then they go on and on about how every mum will be asking for freebies. I should pay for another one. And I should go to another one of their stores who would provide me free chips.

Turns out she was also the manager.

I worked in waitressing many years ago, and honestly, we would have just given a portion of chips. Id be hesitant if it was the whole meal - but a couple of chips for a baby?

Was I being unreasonable?

YABU and who orders chips for their kid when you’re ordering Thai food? Like chips and Chinese..only a certain type will do that. The manager could probably see you coming.

Jesus, the snobbery here.

lucyloo25 · 15/05/2026 23:22

yes why should they replace them? You should buy more blimey the entitment here is shocking !

SnappyQuoter · 15/05/2026 23:25

That’s why you don’t put the whole portion on the high chair. You give your kid a few at a time.

It’s not their job to give you free food.

Did you clean up all the chips from the floor?

Busybeemumm · 15/05/2026 23:41

5 second rule. They would have been fine!

Franjipanl8r · 15/05/2026 23:54

They fulfilled what you paid them for- providing you with chips. They didn’t sell you a service that included feeding the chips to your baby and making sure they didn’t fall on the floor.

ValleyoftheShadow · 16/05/2026 00:06

YABU. Your baby dropped the chips, that's not the fault of the shop owner who will lose money for something that is your responsibility, if they give you a replacement. Give just a couple at a time to your baby. Give them some of your noodles to play with.

Every time in my life that I've either accidentally knocked over my drink or someone else has done it, I've had a replacement drink. I don't remember it ever happening with food, but replacing drinks definitely IS the norm even if the customer is partly at fault.

Only with the goodwill of the management. They wouldn’t cook more food for free.

It sounds like the manager was sick of the people like the OP coming in with their mummy friends, making a mess and asking for freebies.

Why did she take the photographic evidence 🙈

ClayPotaLot · 16/05/2026 00:30

I would probably have given you free chips, it locks in good will and only costs the bussiness a fraction of the menu price. But if it's the sort of location where people are always trying it on, I can see why a hard line might be needed to make the place economically viable.

It was entirely your fault though, so expecting them to replace the chips for free would be unreasonable, even if it's best practice for the retailer.

SaySomethingMan · 16/05/2026 00:41

I’d love to be so brazen and entitled. sheesh!

It’s not best practice though. The fault was purely the OP’s - her kid made a mess and instead of apologising, she left the mess, took a photo and kept asking for a replacement.

So OP is unbelievably rude expecting them cook a fresh portion of chips, clear up the ones the kid has chucked around and then mop the floor, making sure it’s safe. And to keep on and on - it’s embarrassing

It sounds like they are sick and tired of the mummy brigade going in there

Gingerbreadtree · 16/05/2026 01:04

I'm embarrassed for you that you even asked the question.

Secretseverywhere · 16/05/2026 01:12

£5 is outrageous for chips but I don’t think they are being unreasonable to refuse to replace as once they have given you the chips it’s your responsibility to ensure they aren’t dropped or whatever. I remember someone shouting at a food seller who refused to replace when sea gulls nicked his wrap. Thing is they probsbly hear some variety of dropped food 20 times a day.

TerrysNeapolitan · 16/05/2026 01:35

Feed your baby something better than chips.

Candy24 · 16/05/2026 01:43

that is the ultimate of entitlement. I honestly can't believe you had the gall to even ask. Your extremely rude.

Tamtim · 16/05/2026 01:56

Absolutely they should have replaced the chips and the noodle shop should also have replaced the noodles because they probably went cold before you could eat them. 😄

I should have used "good" practice rather than best and I'm not referring to the OP's behaviour, I mean for the food kiosk who, for the price a bit of potato, would have solicited good will, which tends to have a big impact on customer retention and word of mouth. Regardless of whether or not OP's behaviour was exemplary or or not - unless the location draws in a particularly CF crowd, the food kiosk would probably be better off providing the extra.

I assumed, since OP followed that information with the fact they were over the other side of the food court, it's because they wouldn't be able to see that the accident had happened. She wanted to be able to show them that it had and she wasn't just trying to get more chips for a mate or something.

whiteroseredrose · 16/05/2026 02:09

I’m going against the grain here, but probably. It’s customer service and I’ve seen it happen. Dropped drinks in a pub and a dropped bottle of whisky in Sainsbury’s.
