Would you give me the replacement chips?

Im with a group of mum friends at a food court. We all go off to different kiosks. Order our food. We find an available table.

I order from a Thai cuisine, a noodle dish and some chips for the little one.

I pick up the food, put toddler in highchair, put the chips infront of her. I’m about to take my first serving of noodles and baby kicks the chips all over the floor.

The chips cost £5. One of the mums says that it’s been less than 5 mins and they didn’t touch the chips, I should be able to ask for a replacement.

So I go to the kiosk, politely explain that I was just here and the baby annoyingly dropped all the chips. I show them the picture (we are sitting on the other end of the food court).

They say no. But I plead a little bit - I do have a soft voice so I’m being nice. Then they go on and on about how every mum will be asking for freebies. I should pay for another one. And I should go to another one of their stores who would provide me free chips.

Turns out she was also the manager.

I worked in waitressing many years ago, and honestly, we would have just given a portion of chips. Id be hesitant if it was the whole meal - but a couple of chips for a baby?

Was I being unreasonable?

What happens to the chips after you've purchased them is on you. If you dropped an ice cream from the ice cream van would you ask for another.

Emailed Friday evening, after 6.15 and they responded immediately refunded… 🤷‍♀️

Wouldn't be the first time someone's claimed an outcome to their advantage after having been robustly and unanimously called unreasonable.

To come back and say see, I got what I wanted, you were all wrong...

If its true, fine, companies are well known to bend over and lube up for unreasonable customers. If its not, it's quite sad to claim a false victory to sock it to a bunch of randoms. 🤣

agreed!

Also, if it is true ( a big if!) they never investigated it, it’s a chain and there was no time to investigate, in such a very short time. So they weren’t saying OP was right, they just refunded to keep her quiet.

This has to be one of the most bizarre threads I have ever read! 21 pages about a £5 plate of chips which the OP's child dropped on the floor and her subsequent complaint and demand for a refund is utterly ridiculous!

Interestingly, nobody seems to have queried why she was feeding a 2-year old a plate of chips anyway. Hardly very nourishing! And what is a 'food court'?

Not every meal has to be nourishing. It sounded like it was just a little something for the lo to snack on. Or not in this instance! The lo was obviously holding out for its delicious spinach & brown rice casserole.....!

No?? It’s just parent tax, your child knocked over your chips. It’s not up to them to replace something you’ve paid for - if they had seen, it would have been nice to do but going up and pleading with a photo is quite cringe tbh.

So...your child dropped the chips and you want them replaced?
A staff member didn't drop them?

If your child dropped your TV off the stand at home..would Curry's be expected to pay for a new one?

What world are you and the other mum who suggested it living in?

They live in the I'm better than everyone else because I have a kid 😂😂😂 you know the type the women that try and spin everything into they hate me because I'm a woman

I can't believe this is still going.

Hi from Australia. I'm eating my extra crispy air fryer chips with sweet mustard sauce I pinched from McD's earlier. Someone had left it on a table with their rubbish and being bold, I pinched it. Because I deserve it.

Recently my kid dropped his ice cream literally after the first bite. It was covered in crap so couldn’t be salvaged. He got really upset and I felt sorry for him so we queued up again and I bought him another. I didn’t even mention the dropped ice cream to the server and would not dream of asking for a free replacement. My child, my responsibility. The most annoying part, aside from the cost, was that the queue was LONG and overall we waited well over an hour as we had to queue twice. I could have just told my kid the ice cream is gone and coached him through the upset, have done that before. In your case I might’ve just fed the baby some of my noodles if they weren’t spicy. It’s never an option to ask for a free replacement though

Chips at my local chippie costs less and you get a massive amount that would be suitable for a very hungry adult rather than a baby

A "standard" portion of chips at our local chippy is enough for me and DH and we still chuck some away.

Oh God - I promise I'm not one of those "teeny tiny" portion people!!

Same! My DH and I struggle with a regular portion of chips from our chippy between us, even though he has a big appetite! I often wonder how much waste is generated by chips from chippies coming in such ridiculously huge portions.

(Edited to add: no one would mistake me for a teeny tiny either. 😄)

So first of all the mum friend said you should just go up and get some more chips for free, and then you say you were a waitress and would have just given the chips for free. That's convenient. Do either of you own and run a food business?
