Would you give me the replacement chips?

Im with a group of mum friends at a food court. We all go off to different kiosks. Order our food. We find an available table.

I order from a Thai cuisine, a noodle dish and some chips for the little one.

I pick up the food, put toddler in highchair, put the chips infront of her. I’m about to take my first serving of noodles and baby kicks the chips all over the floor.

The chips cost £5. One of the mums says that it’s been less than 5 mins and they didn’t touch the chips, I should be able to ask for a replacement.

So I go to the kiosk, politely explain that I was just here and the baby annoyingly dropped all the chips. I show them the picture (we are sitting on the other end of the food court).

They say no. But I plead a little bit - I do have a soft voice so I’m being nice. Then they go on and on about how every mum will be asking for freebies. I should pay for another one. And I should go to another one of their stores who would provide me free chips.

Turns out she was also the manager.

I worked in waitressing many years ago, and honestly, we would have just given a portion of chips. Id be hesitant if it was the whole meal - but a couple of chips for a baby?

Was I being unreasonable?

Hahaha, wtf planet is your friend living on!
What difference does it make to the seller if your kid ate the chips, or they fell on the floor?! Sounds like they were very polite to you while I’m sure they thinking you were an entitled CF (which you were).

AmusedMember · 15/05/2026 21:27

No, no free chips for your silliness.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 15/05/2026 21:31

' a couple of chips ' v £5 portion of chips

cheeky moo

tealandteal · 15/05/2026 21:44

Why would you give a baby a full portion of anything? I am assuming chips as in fish and chips and not crisps, but you give the baby a few as everyone knows the drop them/throw them. If they are an actual baby (under 12 months) then I always brought weaning food with me as they eat such small portions. They could have had some of your noodles if not too salty?

OnTheBoardwalk · 15/05/2026 21:48

This randomly came up on my Facebook page earlier. Made me think of this thread

Would you give me the replacement chips?
Thanksforyourlackofthought · 15/05/2026 21:52

Why should they lose money for something that was not their fault?
You're a CF.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/05/2026 22:01

Every time in my life that I've either accidentally knocked over my drink or someone else has done it, I've had a replacement drink. I don't remember it ever happening with food, but replacing drinks definitely IS the norm even if the customer is partly at fault.

SmashThePatriarchy · 15/05/2026 22:05

Sheer entitlement.

NameChangeMay2026 · 15/05/2026 22:11

FedBeGone · 15/05/2026 18:28

Why wouldn't you just pick up the chips and put them back on the plate? (only half joking)

Not the point of your thread, but who the fuck pays £5 for chips?

For a child? Edited as I originally said "baby" but you refer to a toddler (then called them a baby).

Edited

I was wondering why you would feed chips to a baby!

Ooodelally · 15/05/2026 22:16

This cannot possibly be real. Jesus.

MemorableLlama · 15/05/2026 22:17

I got an expensive ice cream from a shop in Cornwall. I walked out the door with it and a seagull swooped down and grabbed it before I’d even had chance for a lick! I was gutted but I didn’t expect another free one. It wasn’t the shop’s fault!!

SouthernNights59 · 15/05/2026 22:18

Of course YABVVVVVVU. I can't believe you would even ask and I'm embarrassed for you.

sleepinginmydreams · 15/05/2026 22:19

I wouldn’t have expected free chips, no, but…
I have however brought 4 children up and what went on the floor got a blow and a wipe and back in there mouth.
Build their immune systems up and they’ve never had a day off school. (or work)

I visited Tenby recently with DM, and bought some cockles. We were warned about seagulls.
One did swoop down at DM, but she had her hand over them. Proper CF they are.

RumPidgeon · 15/05/2026 22:24

YABU and who orders chips for their kid when you’re ordering Thai food? Like chips and Chinese..only a certain type will do that. The manager could probably see you coming.

Spiffingdarling88 · 15/05/2026 19:11

Im joking, I think its cheeky to ask.

Yes, it's ridiculous to ask anywhere, but especially in a food court situation. But as I said, I think it's another wind up thread anyway!

but 5 second rule at home, definitely (more like 5 minutes with a steam
mopped floor - every 5 minutes due to afore mentioned toddler!)

Ellsternell · 15/05/2026 22:36

YANBU to ask. I worked in a fast food restaurant and we’d happy replace someone’s food or drink if we seen they’d dropped it.

Enigma54 · 15/05/2026 22:39

Soft voice? £5 chips for a baby? Nah, YABU 🤣🙈

CoverLikelyZebra · 15/05/2026 22:40

You only get a free replacement if the accident was a staff-member's fault. It's sad that your chips got spilled but you do have to pay for a replacement.

I slipped and fell at an event last year. Losing my chips on the floor. A stall holder saw me and immediately offered me free chips. Ironically not the one I had originally bought them from. I was incredibly grateful. They were for the kids who were being guarded in a shelter out of the rain. I went back and bought some adult food from that stall.

They did not need to do it. I was expecting to have to go back somewhere and buy some more. But it was incredibly kind.

I guess the difference here from the OP is that an offer was made. Rather than an expectation. Same as I have had/ seen for spilt drinks.

I guess, if I saw a baby/ toddler drop something/ kick something to the floor and I could help with a freebie - I would. But I would also not expect the offer to be made if it were me/ my kids who had dropped or kicked the food over.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 15/05/2026 22:46

I’d have given you the dust pan and brush to clean them up but no I wouldn’t have given you the chips. Maybe would have given you them at staff discount if you were nice but I wouldn’t have given you free chips unless it was a fuck up on the kitchen end.

saltrock123 · 15/05/2026 22:48

5 quid for chips? Really that's crazy!

NoGarlic · 15/05/2026 23:08

HerbyWitch · 15/05/2026 18:53

The trick is to use a soft voice, apparently.

😂

Grammarnut · 15/05/2026 23:11

Five second rule. Pick them up and feed the child - good for their immune system. Why should the shop give you free chips when your DC threw them on the floor?
NB If a pot of chips costs a fiver I am sure the floor is perfectly clean!

Ottersideofthebridge · 15/05/2026 23:19

I've worked in hotels and have replaced food and drinks when kids have knocked things over, if I saw it happening. I've also had my son's drink replaced once, I was buying a replacement, but they didn't charge. Same accident prone son lost the ice cream off his ice cream cone and the server popped another scoop on for him.

Whilst I wouldn't ask, I don't think it's uncommon for staff to be kind about this. Is this one of those north/south divide things. I'm not really understanding the outrage.
