Morphed into irritable old woman

Not really an AIBU but anyone else late 50’s find themselves impatient and snapping? Just seems I have no patience anymore for anything or anyone. I must be a delight to be around!

Well I don’t think I have, but DH would beg to differ. But then he’s turned into victor meldew.

Overtheatlantic · 06/05/2026 20:28

I’ve been awful lately. My poor husband gets snapped at for existing in my space. Today I told the cat that I don’t wfh to serve her. I can’t imagine what my colleagues think of me (and I really don’t care because they’re all calling in sick all the time).

BossFrog · 06/05/2026 20:30

yes and wish I had always been this way tbh!

cupfinalchaos · 06/05/2026 20:36

Snapped at dh for eating an apple loudly. I actually frighten myself sometimes and not at all sure I’m fit for company!

Are you bored? Exercise? Enjoy work?

Endofyear · 06/05/2026 21:03

Yep, I'm blaming menopause! Have no patience and I'm very irritable 😩 and tired!

Ilovemychocolate · 06/05/2026 21:05

It’s a LOVELY stage of life!
No shits given, rude people remonstrated with, speak my mind and feel amazing!

Lifeisforliving12 · 06/05/2026 21:14

Once you reach a certain age you have zero fucks to give. It’s liberating.

PurpleAxe · 06/05/2026 21:17

It is because everyone is so fucking annoying.

VickyEadieofThigh · 06/05/2026 21:18

I'm almost 68 and have been like this since I was 49.

Someone else mentioned this to me. Would the GP do that if you ask? (My 12 year old gP tilts his head and tries to give me anti depressants…) I’d quite like a blood test to rule stuff out first!

cobrakaieaglefang · 06/05/2026 22:44

My fuse has always been short but shortened even more at peri, got shorter at meno until relatively recently. Now approaching 60, I don't give 2 shiny shits. Weirdly, knowing it has made me calmer. I can still go from 0-60 in an instant but I've been told maybe I was/am ND as its a sign, mod speak is emotional dysregulation..I prefer 'tolerance of shit low threshold' 😉
I took up martial arts later in life too which I think has also helped with my focus in life and regulation.

NotMyRealAccount · 06/05/2026 22:45

No, I've become less sensitive to minor irritations as time has gone by.

Being irritable all the time seems to me like the reverse of having zero fucks to give?

They should do. There are NICE guidelines now.

DonewhatIcando · 06/05/2026 23:21

@cupfinalchaos
I feel ya!
The memes about having no more fucks to give just about sums me up.
I was actually called angry and aggressive by my boss at work, instead of reflecting I gave him a really good show of just how angry and aggressive I can be.
I just really can't be arsed with people and their bullshit and I'm no longer keeping quiet

ThisChirpyOpalCat · 06/05/2026 23:30

I’m with you. I am sick of everyone’s shit! I was such a happy, pleasant person in my late teens and 20’s. Now my internal monologue is pretty much, fuck off, I don’t care…

I’m also sick of food. The shopping, the choosing, bagging it up, dragging it home, the putting away, the deciding what to have, the cooking, the eating, the clearing up!!!

Whiteheadhouse · 07/05/2026 00:11

I am not snapping but I no longer put myself out even a fraction as much as I used to. The family have definitely noticed.

Whiteheadhouse · 07/05/2026 00:13

I am on Ashwagandha the last few months and it is amazing. So wish I had taken it years ago like my friends advised. I seem so much calmer, less stress, and definitely giving less fxxks.

For me this happened around age 18. I’m now 56 and still have zero patience and am easily irritated. But I’m better at concealing my irritation now and I never snap at people (despite wanting to badly!). I’m easily recognised as that woman in the queue who keeps muttering FFS under her breath.
