It's not nepotism then is it,

hahabahbag · 04/05/2026 20:48

Jack Whitehall got his career off the ground joking about nepotism basically, he openly acknowledges that his connections got him going but he and all the aforementioned nepobabies only get to stay in the industry if they are good, today - it’s a cut throat business and directors and producers don’t put up for long with actors, presenters etc who are no good whoever their parents are!

GingerBeverage · 04/05/2026 20:49

Mel Giedroyc’s sister is a director who gave her early jobs in TV.

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that many kids go into the same occupation as their parents. It’s similar in many professions and trades. They see family members doing it, hear it being talked about over the dinner table, can easily get advice about how to get into the industry, and yes, have access to contacts who can ease their pathway into the roles.

It’s one of the reasons it’s so important that kids (particularly kids who wouldn’t otherwise get the opportunity) get access to the people who can help them into career roles through, for example, supporting school open days, mentoring, work experience, placements, etc. If you get the opportunity to do this - please consider it.

Have you frequented a state secondary recently, these things don't happen!

Riley Keough is the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley, so the grand daughter of Elvis Presley

Gerard Way ( singer, My chemical Romance) and Joe Rogan are cousins.

Sabrina Carpenter and Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson) are niece and aunt.

Wasn’t she cast in Funny Girl on Broadway because her dad financed it?

I don’t think there is any evidence that her father financed the production, but she was terribly well connected.

I think the problem for her is that the Barbra Streisand portrayal is so well-known and so iconic. There was talk that they wanted to take a different direction and really lean into the Funny of Funny Girl, but she just isn’t the vocal powerhouse that people felt the role required.

I'm sure but the fact that they even had access to demonstrate this to people who are determining these prospects is pretty depressing.

It is also really dull. I mean, it tells you a lot about the way society has become so unequal when you know someone like Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais had no connections but that just wouldn't happen now.

NeedToKnow101 · 04/05/2026 21:06

I read that Simon Reeves, who makes travel documentaries, doesn’t have any famous connections.

Not a fan of his though, he seems incredibly elitist

He went to Cambridge with Robert Webb, David Mitchel and Olivia Coleman

See the other three dont come off as intolerable of normal people 😩

I'd feel like Richard would be judging me the second he saw me for being 'undereducated'

RIchard Osman, that’s another - his brother is in Suede. Not sure how much influence that had on his career.

Richard Osman was primarily a tv producer, he created pointless suggested his university friend Zander Armstrong for it who apparently turned down a different game show previously because he didn’t want to be typecast (I think it was who wants to be a millionaire) Richard then ended up doing it with him as they worked well together. That led to ROHOG and stuff like task master. The writing is purely because he’s a well known name though.

I didn't know until recently that Carol Drinkwater who was Helen in the original series of All Creatures Great and Small is the sister of Linda Regan who was in Hi di Hi, it was when Brian Murphy died last year that I saw.

I didn't know that. They do look alike once you know.

Ellen Terry (very, very famous Victorian dramatic actress, possibly the most famous) was Sir John Gielguds great aunt.

And also my even greater aunt!

That Emerald Fennel woman who recently made an unforgivable travesty of Wuthering Heights. A crime against literature.

I then read that she played Camilla in The Crown - and I thought she was awful in that. It may not have been her fault, it may have been as she was directed, but someone got Camilla very, very wrong.

She's the daughter of the jewellery designer Theo Fennel. I be doors were opened for her.

Joan Collins is her sister's godmother!

She also went to Marlborough and hung out with the Guinesses!

asdbaybeeee · 04/05/2026 21:37

Maya Rudolph had influential parents
the actress who played Daisy in Daisy jones and the six is Elvis presleys granddaughter

He didn't. He wrote the script and did the voices. The Magic Roundabout - Wikipedia

Claudia winkleman and actress Sophie Winkleman are sisters

AllaMova · 04/05/2026 21:50

I just thought of another example. If anyone on here is a horror film fan, then you may know the name Val Lewton, who apparently, created the jump scare. He was a famous producer of early horror films.

His Aunt Alla Nazimova was a very famous actress (of both the stage and film.)

Nazimova was also the Godmother of Nancy Regan!

Redrosesposies · 04/05/2026 21:55

PP's have mentioned Dakota Johnson and her grandmother Tippi Hedren (Hitchcock's The Birds and Marnie). Her parents are Don Johnson (Miami Vice) and Melanie Griffith (Working Girl - the worst acting I have ever, ever seen)

@BleedinglyObvious thanks for pointing that out - I misread https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Thompson, which says he created the English narration for Magic Roundabout.

I posted because I only learnt that their mother was Phyllida Law when I saw the Winter Guest, in which Phyllida and Emma play a mother and daughter.
