Sourdough is still everwhere in cafes and restauants. Why? It's either tough or crunchy in a bad way. It's often riddled with holes. Butter doesn't work well on it, what with all the craters. It's not a nice base for things on toast, it's even worse untoasted. Nasty scratchy bread. Why can't we have normal, fresh bread/toast back on the menu? Cafes advertise it on the menu like it's a good thing. Smashed avo on sourdough. GET IT OFF THE SOURDOUGH and put it on decent toast. Even a slice of Warburtons would better. I found a dank, soggy, tasteless piece sinking into my soup in a restaurant last night. Weird. Rant over.

Oh god YABVU

It’s so much nicer. Now if someone makes non sour dough bread toast in the house it smells like cake, it’s so sweet.

I love my sourdough! I make a loaf every other day and have it toasted with butter or peanut butter for breakfast, I can't get enough of it 😂. That reminds me, I must feed Agnes (the starter)

TanquerayTickles · Yesterday 20:14

It's so chewy! I like the taste but my teeth ache just thinking about it. Agree re brioche too, away out of here with that!

The key to good soda bread is keeping it simple, don't make it too wet and don't handle it too much. My Mam's soda bread recipe has stood me in good stead since I started making it as a child.

2 cups of plain flour (actual cups, Irish mammy)
Half pint buttermilk
Half teaspoon salt
Half teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
Double the quantities if you want a bigger loaf
Bake for about 40 mins at 170
Don’t forget to cut a cross on top
Wrap it in tea towel to cool

That is a direct copy of the late Mammy Tickles handwritten recipe :-)

Sourdough doesn’t have rapeseed oil or UPF’s. Bagged bread is utter shit.

user1497787065 · Yesterday 20:34

I don’t like it either but I like both my bread and my toast soft.

GoldThumb · Yesterday 20:40

Tiger bread still reigns supreme for me

ApolloandDaphne · Yesterday 20:43

I hate sour dough. It's too hard and chewy. I like all other types of bread but sour dough
can fuck off.

merrymelody · Yesterday 20:45

It’s delicious toasted with cheese or avocado.

Madcats · Yesterday 20:46

Gails don’t seem to be able to make sourdough without massive holes part-way through a loaf! If Bertinet and Waitrose can manage, I am not sure what they are doing wrong.

I presume the brunch sourdough places must toast each slice a long time at a low temp because I seem to be able to toast the stuff without turning it rock hard.

Brioche are a burger abomination.

DamnBuster · Yesterday 20:48

Totally agree, awful, chewy, tasteless stuff.

Give me a hunk of nutty wholegrain any day of the week.

Can I ask what is wrong with rapeseed oil? I tend to use this for cooking as it's cheaper but also has a high smoke point.

Another one who doesnt know about 'other bread'.

Such a shame.

It’s such an effort, I cannot be arsed

Ooh no, my tummy loves some wholemeal sourdough. Nowhere near as much bloating as regular bread.

MsGreying · Yesterday 21:05

Swiftie1878 · Yesterday 13:03

Literally couldn’t agree more! Bloody HATE the stuff.

Also hate the new trend of burgers in a ‘brioche’ bun 😡😡😡
Why does anyone want their burger in a sweet, saccharine burger bun?!? 🤷‍♀️
A normal bread bun, perhaps with some sesame seeds please.

Aldi sesame seeds brioche. Lightly toasted. With sliced gherkins,,fried onions cheese and a burger. Add a splash of piquant ketchup and you've got a mouthwatering delicious dinner served with a few skin on fries and beer battered onion rings.

AgnesMcDoo · Yesterday 21:06

It’s so tasty. Love it.

elliesmummy19 · Yesterday 21:07

I agree with you, OP. It’s terrible. My husband keeps buying it because he loves it. I wish it would disappear. Horrible, tangy, chewy stuff.

PomplaMouse · Yesterday 21:14

I'm team OP, sourdough makes everything worse. The only worse genre of bread I sometimes encounter is cornbread.

Ohpleeeease · Yesterday 21:21

Horrible stuff, it can fuck right off and take goat’s cheese with it.

Soda bread on the other hand…

Forthesteps · Yesterday 21:24

Turtleyturtles · Yesterday 13:00

Oh yes I agree. Brioche is always a nasty surprise. What's wrong with a normal white roll or burger bun? More wasted calories!

What's wrong is that they have all the flavour of pleated cotton wool...

meh
it's just one variety of bread
you know what you like, so buy that.

sourdough rye, toasted, with melty blue cheese is divine imo

No!!!! Brioche is too sweet!!

beigetriangle · Yesterday 21:31

and I want meatloaf with savoury corn bread now

Redeagleflyimg · Yesterday 21:34

If you avoiding UPF ciabatta is good.
We a cafe in Sunderland called Propa and the Stottie they serve is delicious.
So stottie for the win.
