Sourdough is still everwhere in cafes and restauants. Why? It's either tough or crunchy in a bad way. It's often riddled with holes. Butter doesn't work well on it, what with all the craters. It's not a nice base for things on toast, it's even worse untoasted. Nasty scratchy bread. Why can't we have normal, fresh bread/toast back on the menu? Cafes advertise it on the menu like it's a good thing. Smashed avo on sourdough. GET IT OFF THE SOURDOUGH and put it on decent toast. Even a slice of Warburtons would better. I found a dank, soggy, tasteless piece sinking into my soup in a restaurant last night. Weird. Rant over.

OTOH, get rid of fecking brioche!! I want a burger on a decent roll. It’s even worse when I get a bacon sanny in a sweet brioche bun. Now, THAT is what we need shot of.

keep sourdough.

bin brioche.

in the supermarket most of the rolls are brioche. There’s only Sheldon’s really and maybe one supermarket offering that’s not.

Sheepsmellnice · Yesterday 21:46

Totally agree it's either dry , tough as old boots or chewy.

sprigatito · Yesterday 21:51

It’s almost always fucking stale as well. Because the kind of weird fetishists who make and sell it are so convinced it’s a work of art - rather than a loaf of bread - that they’ll proudly display it in a window for two days and then sell it to some poor sap like it’s a precious jewel. If I wanted my gums gashed to pieces I’d save my money and chew on a light bulb.

There is sourdough with soft and good tastes if you have not tried. Not all Sourdough is like that and better for your health compare to supermarket ones (warburtons incl)

I'm really enjoying this thread. I'm glad it's not just me being grumpy about trendy bread. And as PP have said, it's not a choice between sourdough and pappy white UPF sliced. If it were a choice though, I'd have my scrambled eggs on toasted UPF and yes I do have my own teeth.

The soup I had last night in a restaurant was odd. Fish soup. I asked the waiter for some bread when I realised he hadn't brought any and he said "It's in the soup". IN THE SOUP! He wasn't kidding. It was a small piece of sourdough lying low in the bottom of my soup, hidden. Moist, but still chewy. This was not croutons in case you are wondering and I know you are. So I said "Can I have some extra bread please?" A tiny slice arrived. No butter. I left it at that, the man was busy. I'm not a monster. What Is The World Coming To though when people are dropping bread into soup and hiding it?

Sourdough needs to be submerged in soup so you can actually chew it.

I assume autocorrect of Maldon

Oh, of course! Thanks. I was wondering if it's possible to melt salt. Silly me.

ChocolateCinderToffee · Yesterday 22:21

I eat wholemeal sourdough all the time because its ingredients are organic wholemeal flour, salt and water. Nothing else. No sugar, no added yeast, they haven't had to re-add all the vitamins they've stripped out of the flour. It is bread as it should be.

I admit, I love all kinds of bread but many of them are refined white flour and not very good for you.

Summerbay23 · Yesterday 22:22

Sorry but I much prefer sourdough. So much better texture/substance/flavour. Not to mention better health wise, less additives etc.

Jason's sourdough is repulsive. Its like eating something thats gone off in the fridge. We bought it once because I kept reading about it on here, horrible. Went in the bin.

A Reuben certainly not your bag then. All that fermented food!

Ihatethistimeline · Yesterday 22:32

Agree. It’s shite. it feels and tastes like hard playdough. Brioche can also get in the bin. Tastes and feels like an unsatisfying sugary cloud. It’s like the bread version of cotton candy. Yuck. Normal bread is fine.

I think so too and it toasts well. I like that it sometimes has little craters because it catches the butter in them and the bread doesn’t go soggy or fall apart.

I like the tang and the texture and that when eating it it doesn’t stick to the roof of my mouth like the softer breads.

I like toasting it and putting cream cheese and a bit of plum jam on it.

Oh God, now we’re NASILTing on MN. It’s officially a cult.

Omg AGREE!

Redeagleflyimg · Yesterday 22:53

Homemade focaccia is delicious. A local bakery also does a Japanese milk bread, but I think the brioche haters would hate it too!

thenightsky · Yesterday 22:54

I heard the 'sourdough is good' blurb on line. Thought I'd try it. Bought a roll from the most posh shop in town. I couldn't cut it or even make a dent with my bread knife. Moved to the carving knife. Nope. Sharpened the carving knife. Still wouldn't make a dent in it. DH got the electric saw out of his shed. Broke two blades. Fucking £4.50 loaf went in the bin.

AllTheChaos · Yesterday 23:29

I love Gails’ sourdough! And yes, I like it chewy, and slightly sour! I also really enjoy a lovely super dark rye bread, the ones that are sort of mahogany coloured! Can’t stand pappy, flavourless bread. Not supposed to have gluten but if I’m careful, I can have the odd slice of sourdough, but if I try to eat regular bread my stomach will turn itself inside out to get rid of it.
