to wish sourdough would go away?

Sourdough is still everwhere in cafes and restauants. Why? It's either tough or crunchy in a bad way. It's often riddled with holes. Butter doesn't work well on it, what with all the craters. It's not a nice base for things on toast, it's even worse untoasted. Nasty scratchy bread. Why can't we have normal, fresh bread/toast back on the menu? Cafes advertise it on the menu like it's a good thing. Smashed avo on sourdough. GET IT OFF THE SOURDOUGH and put it on decent toast. Even a slice of Warburtons would better. I found a dank, soggy, tasteless piece sinking into my soup in a restaurant last night. Weird. Rant over.

This is mad. Save our Sourdough!!!

outerspacepotato · Today 12:57

It's all good.

AnticsNShenanigans · Today 12:58

Agree!

Tasteless, awful texture - bread without any of the joy and a complete waste of good carbs.

Imfukinradiant · Today 12:58

OTOH, get rid of fecking brioche!! I want a burger on a decent roll. It’s even worse when I get a bacon sanny in a sweet brioche bun. Now, THAT is what we need shot of.

unsureforevermore · Today 12:59

I love sourdough !! However I do agree that some places don’t make it well there is a knack to getting it right !

Gingertam · Today 12:59

I love sourdough. Had some scrambled eggs on it this morning. Yummy. Can't bear it unless it's toasted though.

I'm happy to ditch both!

Oh yes I agree. Brioche is always a nasty surprise. What's wrong with a normal white roll or burger bun? More wasted calories!

I don’t like it either. It’s too chewy!

Plummagic · Today 13:01

Awful bread. Like chewing a cork place mat. Makes horrible toast too.

Maybe not many places have the knack of getting it right or they over toast it? When I've had it with scrambled eggs, it ends up shooting off my plate as I try to eat it with a knife and fork.

Literally couldn’t agree more! Bloody HATE the stuff.

Also hate the new trend of burgers in a ‘brioche’ bun 😡😡😡
Why does anyone want their burger in a sweet, saccharine burger bun?!? 🤷‍♀️
A normal bread bun, perhaps with some sesame seeds please.

Cork place mat! Hahahaha!! Yes. That's it.

I hate it. Chewy in the middle and rock hard crusts. My husband and kids love it and they’re always making it, talking about ‘starters’ and taking photos of it.

I eat bread maybe once or twice a year - at Heathrow when we have a breakfast. Last month I ordered scrambled eggs on toast and it was fucking sourdough.

MidnightPatrol · Today 13:06

I agree, I hate it.

What happened to the nice soft bread.

Too often a breakfast ruined by the rock solid bread.

Gails bread all awful.

PuppyMonkey · Today 13:07

Agree OP. Slimy, holey, chewy horribleness. Ban it now.

Denim4ever · Today 13:09

Nice bakery bread with no sourdough content is quite difficult to find. We've lost nearly all of our traditional bakeries here. As far as supermarkets are concerned, Sainsbury et al do have alternatives to sourdough on the bakery counter and sliced more processed loaves are what they are. I'm not sourdough's biggest fan and I totally agree that the sort of sourdough toast that arrives in a trendy cafe breakfast is often the worst kind of tasteless artisan slice of cardboard.

Nottogetapenny · Today 13:10

Totally agree with all previous comments, sourdough bread is awful! So is brioche burger buns!

Pickledonion1999 · Today 13:11

Overrated and expensive. £2.50+ and you only get about seven slices. I only buy when reduced.

ilovepixie · Today 13:12

I agree. Sour dough is the work of the devil.

Oh I agree re Gales, over priced, over sized, bitter and chewy. While we are mentioning 'chewy' as a descriptive word, I must say that I do not get why food writers and restaurant reviewers use 'chewy' to describe something nice. If steak etc.is 'chewy' that's not a good thing!

Myfridgeiscool · Today 13:15

I’m sitting on the garden eating a toasted sourdough sandwich right now. I love a chewy crust and some decent flavour.
Warburtons is like eating cotton wool!

Blueeberry · Today 13:16

I love sourdough. Didn’t used to like it but started eating it on occasion for the health benefits. Now a few years down the line and it’s all I buy! You get used to the slightly sour taste and become more accustomed to the texture. Nowadays I think that ‘ordinary’ bread tastes/feels overly fake and processed - a regular Warburtons etc loaf no longer feels like real food. It’s so soft and cakey!! 🤢

I do however agree that most cafe/restaurant sourdoughs need a bloody chainsaw to get through - it’s really unpleasant and I avoid ordering ‘on toast’ dishes because of this.

singthing · Today 13:19

YES!!!! Awful stuff unless you want to build a jaw like David Coulthard.

It baffles me how protective people are of it just because they've had a manky bubbling jar in their kitchen since 2020. Never thought I'd live to see bread becoming a status symbol, but....

Delici · Today 13:20

I have a slight sensitivity to gluten and much prefer sourdough as it doesn’t usually affect me in the way fluffy bread does.
