AIBU to think drying washing outside is still normal?

Just getting a load of washing in and DH has declared that no one dries their washing outside anymore and that it is ‘niche’.

Don’t get me wrong, I use the tumble dryer when I need to but surely it is better (and cheaper) to use the line, especially on a day like to day when we have had sunshine and a breeze??

hanging out washing is one of the few chores I enjoy. I feel so connected to women across the ages here I venture outside with my washing basket on my hip

This too. Sun on your face, birds tweeting, wondering how many women stood here pegging out clothes… all I need is a pinny!

CJsGoldfish · 19/04/2026 22:18

I have a tumble dryer but prefer to dry outside. So much better for your clothes, the environment and the wallet!
The sun also kills bacteria, smells and those really hard to remove stains.
Climbing into a freshly made(with sun dried linen) bed is one of the joys of life ❤️

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 19/04/2026 22:23

Tumble drying, in this economy! No way. Even if the spiders are doing dreadful things.

BeFunnyBiscuit · 19/04/2026 22:23

we put it out all seasons, even when is 5C with some breeze

Purplebunnie · 19/04/2026 22:24

Been drying laundry outside weather permitting for weeks now. Two loads yesterday, one today and one planned for tomorrow

I don’t know anyone with a garden who doesn’t dry their washing outside.

This ,it’s just normal 🤷‍♀️

Cyclebabble · 19/04/2026 22:27

So many reasons to dry outside. It is generally better for the material. It smells nicer. It is better for the environment. It is cheaper. The ironing is easier. When it is cold I have to dry inside, but whenever possible, out my clothes go.

Flushitdown · 19/04/2026 22:31

I really don't like the smell of outside dried stuff, but still do it! It's faster and better for the environment. Plus loads of clothes are ruined in the tumble dryer.

Hall84 · 19/04/2026 22:33

Working my way through but no tumble dryer here, so happy they had props in the middle aisle at aldi this weekend!

Very happy to be part of a large "niche" and hang washing out whenever possible.

Absolutely me too.
I live in a very nice area and on a gorgeous day during the winter the house gets pulled apart to be washed.
I have several retractable washing lines that are just brilliant in a sheltered south facing garden.
Love to get my sheets out and back on the bed smelling so fresh.

We live in a ‘naice’ area on London and to be fair to him, when I look out the window only our very elderly neighbours hang their washing outside, certainly our other next door neighbours never hang anything out and I have often wondered why they don’t use their south facing garden to dry washing.

Probably hayfever, it's quite common. At the peak of pollen season I have to have a shower when I get in from outside and change clothes. No way would I want to dry washing outside, I have to do everything I can to limit exposure to pollen, even when I'm taking antihistamines, using eye drops etc. If someone's allergic to tree and grass pollen it can take them out for quite a while.

I won't be drying washing outside until August/September time. I wonder if my neighbours are all judging me, I've never thought they would notice/care what I'm doing with my washing! I don't own a tumble dryer either, I dry it inside with a dehumidifier. I'm very jealous of everyone drying things outside, hayfever can be quite miserable.

It's the best sleep in fresh outside dried bedding.

This 👆

One of life's greatest pleasures.

DaisyDooley · 19/04/2026 22:46

I LOVE drying washing outside especially bedding,
Its a joy when I see the sheets flapping in the wind and I know they take barely any time at all to iron, unlike when I tumble them or even dry them on an airer in the house,
My dear sister in laws mum says “if the pavements are dry then you can dry washing”. I love this. Any change I get it’s out.
Although l had to shoot out yesterday and run out to get it when it started to suddenly rain ( April showers!)

Bufftailed · 19/04/2026 22:47

get excited about drying my washing outside in good weather 🤣🤣

Hohumitsreallyallthereis · 19/04/2026 22:52

All clothes go outside, weather allowing. Sheets and towels go in the dryer mainly because our washing line is too low to the ground for sheets, and I like soft towels :-)

Kickinthenostalgia · 19/04/2026 22:55

We love it. Any bit of sun and breeze it gets out outside. Back in 2024 we even had washing out up until November because it was still fairly warm. Was impossible last year because it’s done nothing but non stop rain 😬 if it’s not raining it most likely will get shoved outside even for a small amount of drying.

I don’t know anyone with a garden who doesn’t dry their washing outside.

We don’t as we have often returned from work and found it has poured with rain unexpectedly.
Usually, I put the laundry on in the evening and out to dry overnight so do this indoors and everything is dry by the morning.
We rarely use our tumble dryer either but do have a separate room for laundry so there is no wet washing all round to house.

InterestedDad37 · 19/04/2026 22:58

I do it, when the weather allows. Like today. I don't even own a tumble dryer 🤷

PracticalPolicy · 19/04/2026 23:01

Having just spent hundreds on new luxury towels for the household and having bad allergic asthma and hay-fever, I am proud to say I have never dried outside. I love my tumble dryer. I don't want cardboard sheets and towels. No-one in our development of ten houses dries outside.

Muteduck · 19/04/2026 23:02

Loads of people in my area hang washing out.

I look down the back gardens of our street on a fine day and see lots of washing out. When we moved here 12 years ago, the tumble dryer went in the garage until I could find a proper place for it. It's still there and I haven't used it since.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 19/04/2026 23:04

I’ve got three loads out right now. YES! Out overnight with the spiders’ willies and the darking.

My late MIL (from Philly, so definitely US) pegged out whatever she could on her tiny tiny balcony. So it isn't universal in the US either.

As for 'unkempt' - why is doing your bit for the planet more important than appearances? That seems pretty shallow to me.

I don’t know when your MIL died, but I’m American and I haven’t seen anyone dry clothes on a line in the US since the early 2000s. If people don’t have their own dryers, they go to a laundromat.

We never dry outside, completely against the grain here clearly

Yep in the same camp. Best part of 30+ years and tumble dry or rack in a utility room. I am currently in a rented house whilst my house sale progresses and they have a rack in the main part of the house. None of the neighbours have a washing line on display so definitely going against whats going on on this thread.
