AIBU to think drying washing outside is still normal?

Just getting a load of washing in and DH has declared that no one dries their washing outside anymore and that it is ‘niche’.

Don’t get me wrong, I use the tumble dryer when I need to but surely it is better (and cheaper) to use the line, especially on a day like to day when we have had sunshine and a breeze??

It's the best sleep in fresh outside dried bedding.

Unless you suffer from hayfever, in which case you're rolling around covered in pollen all night....

We have a holiday house in SW Florida with a very militant HOA. You’re not allowed to dry washing outside. Not that anyone would even consider it, tbh. Think it must be bemusing to Brits who rent there and are fans of drying laundry outside.

I live in one of those Florida HOA communities. A little known fact is that Florida has a "right to dry" law that prohibits HOAs from enforcing bans on outside clotheslines (I think they can prohibit drying on balconies, etc). However, I don't think the issue arises often because people don't generally want to dry outside. In addition to the cultural expectations against it, there are also the daily thunderstorms in summer and where I live, yellow pollen would adhere to anything wet.

Same. I'm allergic to grass pollen and hanging washing inside (next to a dehumidifier), keeping windows shut, limiting time outdoors, using an air purifier in the bedroom does help me, especially for that grass pollen peak in late May/early June. I wouldn't be able to smell any difference in the sheets anyway. I really hate that feeling of having to get up constantly to wipe nose, waking up feeling awful with painful eyes and totally blocked sinuses, tingly throat and mouth.

I obviously use anti histamines, eye drops, nasal spray but for that 3-4 week period being outside can be a bit miserable, unless it's raining or it's just rained. Thankfully I only seem to be allergic to grass pollen.

Have you tried pre empting the hayfever season and starting your antihistamines early to build up some in your system? I started in march last year and it wasn't early enough so started February this year lol. It's awful isn't it. Some days my eyes are almost swollen shut. I sit inside with Aircon on and windows closed.

I always mean to do this and then forget! I should set myself a reminder! That's good to know that it helps you if you start early enough.

See previous comments. I do, but it is worth it. I am also allergic to tree pollen which falls morning and evening, so relatively easy to avoid.

Hate drying outside. Looks horrible. Tumble dryer every time for me. Doesn’t cost me anything anyway

It is ok but not underwear which must be dried in a tumble dryer or on a radiator.

No no, underwear can be dried outside too, there is no law saying it can’t…

Wot. I love seeing washing hanging outside. Absolutely love watching it blowing. We stayed with a friend in Wick last year and it was incredibly windy. Had to put in 3 x the amount of pegs on items (she lives on the beach). Wouldn't have thought about using her dryer.

It's just not very satisfying chucking things in a tumble dryer. I have one and only use it for bedding as I have a tiny garden (patio). I have a tumble dryer but very rarely use it - maybe if we've come home from holiday with lots of washing and it's raining for the next couple of days.

weareallcats · 20/04/2026 18:48

I go through phases but still dry washing outside when it’s hot and sunny. My favourite method is hanging things inside with the dehumidifier on though. I use the tumble drier for sheets, towels and underwear year round.

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/04/2026 18:53

What a bizarre thing to say! It’s much better for your clothes to dry then outside (less wear and UV has all sort of cleaning benefits from stain removal to killing off fungal spores and bacteria that didn’t come out in the wash).

Your DH reminds me of an ex-friend who also had bizarre ideas about drying washing outside. She claimed it upset the neighbours. I pointed out that nobody could see into her garden but she still maintained it was rude and inconsiderate. An incredibly odd thing to say. Absolutely baffled.

Were you friends with Hyacinth Bucket?!

AuntChippy · 20/04/2026 19:34

My reasons for never line drying are ridiculous, even to me.

I’m far, far too lazy.

I don’t want to look at my lovely garden with washing spoiling the view.

And we love our tumble dryer.

kkloo · 20/04/2026 20:14

I dry inside. I'm in a new build with air to water and the house is very warm, the air is very dry in the house so I need the extra moisture in the air. Plus I love the smell.

Hahaha! Yeah must have been her!

MotherTuckinGenius · 20/04/2026 20:53

I so look forward to the first day I can peg the washing outside. However I’m very OCD about the pegs. Each garment must have two matching coloured pegs. Certain pegs for large garments and smaller pegs for underwear and socks. I get much satisfaction from looking at my clean perfectly ordered washing blowing about on the twirly 😁

Dextersgoneovertherainbowbridge · 20/04/2026 21:10

Line dryer washing smells divine, and irons do much better. I always dry outside if I can

queenceleste · 20/04/2026 22:56

Outrageous; “niche” indeed.

Please sneer at him on my behalf.

Drying your clothes outside is fantastically ecologically sound.

Also seeing washing blowing on the line is meditational heaven.

Also it minimizes the damp
in your home - what’s not to love. I have never had a tumble dryer.

🧺

I dried my dressing gown and towel on the line today and ended up sniffing them deliriously for awhile.

Nothing smells better than maybe the top
of your baby’s head.

I wish we could reliably dry ouside more. But whenever I get home from work its always minging weather - and at the weekend we are in and out so much it doesn't work - and tbh, the last few times ive had to rewash as the bloody burbs poop on it!

We don't dry inside though as we have a 250yr old house with 1m thick granite walls and minimal ventilation and it just gets damp if we do. Tumble costs pennies to run as well (heat exchanger)

76evie · Yesterday 22:12

I tumble dryer most of my washing, don’t ever peg anything out, I don’t even have a washing line. However I would say most people I know peg washing out when the weather permits, so I think your DH is wrong.

I just find it more convenient and quicker to tumble dryer plus I don’t iron so this helps with the creases. The odd thing that I don’t thing will cope with being tumble dried I just hang up on a hanger and hang in conservatory, I find it dries quicker on a hanger than over a maiden.
