Any idea what this could be, Dr doesn’t know!

DD (8) has had swelling in her face all week. Drs originally thought it was down to her dermatitis so they prescribed some cream but it hasn’t made a difference. The swelling has been getting worse everyday, to the point this morning she could barely open her eyes, she also has swelling around her nose so she’s breathing through her mouth. It starts off worse in the morning and gets slightly better through the day but there is still some swelling there at the end of the day.
When we saw the Gp this morning her neck was also really swollen and he said every gland is up. She has no temp but a raised heart rate and says she doesn’t feel well but can’t really describe why. Dr said he has no idea, it could be something viral but her body is obviously trying to fight something as her glands are up. He said it will either get worse, in which case go to a&e or the body will fight it on its own.

anyone else’s child had this and have any clue what it could be?

They always say it's viral when they don't know

They say it because they've excluded everything else! They don't say a thing is viral just because they don't know FFS

'Excluded everything' Grin

GPs say everything is a virus until someone does some tests and actually diagnoses as opposed to guessing.

I would take her to A&E they will do bloods

Ah yes, these famous blood tests......

I’d go to A and E if it’s affecting breathing. Access to more doctors and specialists. I wouldn’t wait to see if it gets worse.

That!

frecklemcspeckles · 17/04/2026 20:56

My husband is a doctor and he said def a&e and he'd be wanting a head CT to rule less good things out.

Hellohelga · 17/04/2026 21:12

Hives? Try antihistamine - fexofenadine.
ETA - A&E will give max dose of antihistamines allowed and steroids to get swelling down far quicker than you can at home.

Blood tests are routine and will reveal how well organs are functioning, show any infection and ensure things are within the correct limits.

teraculum29 · 17/04/2026 21:29

mumps??

TheWonderhorse · 17/04/2026 21:37

It definitely might be fine. But I would give any sort of breathing restriction a massive NOPE and I'm glad to read you're opting for A&E.

Good luck OP!

Also to all those saying I should have taken her already, I’m normally a complete worrier with stuff like this and would have done but because the dr said we need to wait and see and only go if it gets worse it’s made me question my judgement!

I'd take her OP.

I do know someone who presented like this and the "diagnosis" was glandular fever/ EBV, but they kind of always wondered if that was right or not.

ETA It did eventually go away just to add something reassuring but do take her to A and E.

BinNightTonight · 17/04/2026 22:00

I think youre doing the right thing, getting her checked at A&E.

Impartialopinions · 17/04/2026 22:02

Ask for bloods on kidneys whilst there

Somewhereovertherainbow85 · 17/04/2026 22:03

I’d take her to a&e when it’s at its worst. Take pictures to show them also, in case it improves. Sorry if I missed this if you’ve already said but could it be her sinuses? Worse at night due to mucous now flowing while lying down? I only say that as I’ve just recovered from an awful sinus infection that caused swelling of my face.

really hope your little one is ok.

Tillow4ever · 17/04/2026 22:06

I’m hoping you are currently at A&E. It must be really scary, but it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry. The GP might be right - but they can, and do, make mistakes. Your gut clearly wasn’t sure about what you were told or you wouldn’t have posted on here asking others for opinions.

I hope that you get answers and your daughter is better soon.

ArtAngel · 17/04/2026 22:06

I hope you are being well looked after at A&E OP.

I am the world's least-worrier (and not a Dr or hcp) but this would frighten me and I would want A&E,

But fingers crossed for you that they have identified the cause and been reassuring.

BrendaSmall · 17/04/2026 22:20

@hubbabaloo
how is your daughter this evening? X

Wheresthebeach · 17/04/2026 22:25

Hope she’s getting looked at OP and you get some answers. Your GP sounds a bit useless, I’d have though breathing issues would raise genuine concern

changenameagain555 · 17/04/2026 23:28

I think you should make sure they do blood tests. I’d definitely make sure a full blood count is done.

Poodlelove · 17/04/2026 23:38

Our son had a tooth abscess and his face swelled up just as you are describing.

After having the tooth out and I antibiotics we put an ice pack on his face which really helped.

Go to A and E definitely

I take it this is tongue-in-cheek.

Did she get a bed overnight? It were you sat in chairs?

How was the swelling last night?

I had a feeling you'd be stuck there all night.

It's clearly not urgent, so why don't you go home and get some rest.

hubbabaloo · 18/04/2026 10:55

We can’t go home as we are waiting for some more blood results, they are worried it could be to do with a cyst she has had growing on the top of her nose/between eyebrows so we need to also wait for a scan.
