Any idea what this could be, Dr doesn’t know!

DD (8) has had swelling in her face all week. Drs originally thought it was down to her dermatitis so they prescribed some cream but it hasn’t made a difference. The swelling has been getting worse everyday, to the point this morning she could barely open her eyes, she also has swelling around her nose so she’s breathing through her mouth. It starts off worse in the morning and gets slightly better through the day but there is still some swelling there at the end of the day.
When we saw the Gp this morning her neck was also really swollen and he said every gland is up. She has no temp but a raised heart rate and says she doesn’t feel well but can’t really describe why. Dr said he has no idea, it could be something viral but her body is obviously trying to fight something as her glands are up. He said it will either get worse, in which case go to a&e or the body will fight it on its own.

anyone else’s child had this and have any clue what it could be?

We can’t go home as we are waiting for some more blood results, they are worried it could be to do with a cyst she has had growing on the top of her nose/between eyebrows so we need to also wait for a scan.

Yup. Mast cell activation syndrome.

Swiftie1878 · 18/04/2026 11:16

Best of luck! She’s in the right place xx

I had a feeling you'd be stuck there all night.

It's clearly not urgent, so why don't you go home and get some rest.

I think the hcps who are actually looking after the op's dc know best when they can go home 🙄.

Glad she's been seen by people actually doing some investigations op rather than the gps 'dunno let's wait and see' approach. Good luck.

Wheresthebeach · 18/04/2026 12:52

Glad they are taking it seriously.

Hopingtohelp25 · 18/04/2026 13:23

Thinking of you both, @hubbabaloo. You’ did the right thing and I hope you have some answers soon

Ferriswheel101 · 18/04/2026 13:35

Dear hubbaballo,

Just to say thinking of you, your daughter and family. All the very best and hope the medical staff work it all out very soon and she's feeling much better swiftly. Xx

Yup. Mast cell activation syndrome.

I have MCAS, I’ve never had a cyst or visible swelling due to it.

So glad to read they are taking bloods and doing a scan.

Finally being sent home, they have said she has sinusitis but because her sinuses are so inflamed it has been pushing against her cyst which has caused the swelling. Being sent home with antibiotics, steroid nose spray and an ENT outpatient appt

You must both be exhausted. Hope she feels better soon.

Oh I should also mention the ruled out allergies as she’s not had any itching or rashes plus no runny nose etc.

I’m no dr but I would try antihistamines for her age to see if it helps

MyPeachScroller · 18/04/2026 17:54

Take her to A&E now.

Morganrae1 · 18/04/2026 17:55

Go to A&E. It could be any of the things the doc suggested, but I would say a blood test, at the very least, is necessary.

OP, ask your GP to make a note on her files that she didn't have a temperature with a bacterial infection. I never have a temperature and ended up in A&E in agony once with strep A tonsilitis because they didn't believe me that I could possibly have bacterial tonsilitis without a temperature. They ended up believing me because my CRP levels were 75 and a throat swab was strep A positive. When I'm ill I get dizzy, swollen and sometimes a rash. I also had acute mastitis without a temperature. Once they did a CRP test because they didn't believe me and my CRP levels were 90 but my temperature was 36,8 C.
It sucks to not get temperatures because you dont get taken seriously, so it's worth having it written down somewhere. I hope she's feeling better!!

I did, repeatedly.

Uptightmumma · 18/04/2026 18:22

I don’t want to worry you, but my friends son had swelling like this. They thought it was mumps but it was actually leukaemia. He is fine now as it was caught early but I would 100% be wanting a full body work up and bloods taken as a matter of urgency

I'm so pleased they were thorough and you have a follow up appt.

Try to see a different GP next time you have a worrying situation!

Mischance · 18/04/2026 18:30

I agree about seeing a differet GP. I do not think his response was anywhere near good enough.

MaldivesBlue · 18/04/2026 18:31

It could be caused by ibuprofen so only use paracetamol until you know what the cause is. My friend knew she was allergic to aspirin but too ibuprofen and nearly had anaphylaxis. Be proactive and push for an answer.

Daisy105 · 18/04/2026 18:42

Does she have an infection, or has she had one recently? Xx

Glad you're home. All things your useless GP could've done instead of you having an overnighter in hospital.

The steroid spray and antibiotics shouldve been started with the caveat go to a&e if any deterioration.

Antibiotics don't work if it's a viral illness obviously, but they do work in bacterial and with a dc with an elevated heart rate and obvious signs of illness the GP shouldve done the basics at least.

SomethingSScintillating · 18/04/2026 18:50

@Gloriia it's so worrying isn't it.all that extra time and worry also

hubbabaloo · 18/04/2026 18:54

@Gloriia yes I agree. If I’m honest some of the drs we saw at the hospital weren’t much better! Two different drs told us her tonsils were infected.. despite the face she had her tonsils removed 3 years ago, when I mentioned this they said “oh yeh I can see that now”. Also since we’ve got home I’ve read her discharge notes and they’ve also diagnosed her with strep which wasn’t mentioned to us once whilst we were there. I’m guessing they are just so overstretched these things can happen but it’s a bit of a worry!
