How on earth can he go to visit the Orange one now??

ShetlandishMum · 07/04/2026 18:21

Not his choice or call. Goverment decision.

zurigo · 07/04/2026 18:23

It is the role of the monarch to go where they are sent and entertain who they are told to entertain. Do you really think he enjoyed hosting Trump at Windsor? Of course he didn't, but it's his job and that's why he and other working royals get the sovereign grant. They are performing a diplomatic and 'soft power' role on behalf of this country.

Bettercallsalli · 07/04/2026 18:27

Surely things have changed now!

Not on behalf of me he isn't.

The man has been desperately ill, give him a break

JehovasFitness · 07/04/2026 18:36

I despise Trump and I am not enthusiastic about monarchy but this post betrays a lack of understanding about how constitutional monarchy works.

The government calls the shots. I would like them to cancel it but it is not for the monarch to decide.

Everybodys · 07/04/2026 18:37

Bettercallsalli · 07/04/2026 18:27

Surely things have changed now!

The fact that he's a constitutional monarch hasn't.

Fair enough to not want him to go, but that's up to the elected government not him. He should do what he's told.

Perhaps he should stay at home then instead of going to meet some unhinged lunatic.

Not a cance..if he can't do the job he needs to step down.

Lifesyoungdream · 07/04/2026 18:38

I think they should go but Camilla should visit the victims of Epstein.

Itsmetheflamingo · 07/04/2026 18:39

he’s just some bloke. If we didn’t fawn over his importance he wouldn’t have it. No one in America or anywhere else gives a shit about KC visiting. It’s not a big deal

HotGazpacho · 07/04/2026 18:40

I don’t disagree OP, but he’s being sent at the behest of the Foreign Office, I assume in a futile attempt to stem the flow of blood from the severing of the “Special Relationship”. So, not Charlie boy’s decision. However, I think the FO/UK Government really need to rethink it in light of everything. We are in such a precarious position outside of the EU now, but Trump is a psychopath and we can’t be trying to curry favour from him anymore, it’s gross and inappropriate in the extreme.

Doing the government's bidding is doing the job.

Like a pp, I'm no monarchist and I would like to see the visit cancelled, but that isn't the King's decision. Do you not understand how our constitutional monarchy works?

takealettermsjones · 07/04/2026 18:41

Well you can but I doubt he reads Mumsnet.

HeddaGarbled · 07/04/2026 18:41

You’re like Harry: you think he’s got more power than he really has.

StasisMom · 07/04/2026 18:41

I wonder if it might not be a bad thing - Trump is such a social climber and loves to believe he was friends with the Queen and is friends with Charles, maybe some good could come out of it. I’m sure I’m wrong alas, such a twat is Trump.

BMW6 · 07/04/2026 18:42

Surely you know that The King acts at the behest of his Government OP??? Or are you very young?

I'm hoping Charles gets a last minute attack of influenza......what a shame

I like this idea.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 07/04/2026 18:44

If they bomb the shit out of Iran tonight as threatened, I imagine the visit will have to be cancelled. For all that UK governments of all stripes tend to suck up to the US, I am not sure that they could get away with sending the king in to sit alongside a war criminal of such magnitude.

SockPlant · 07/04/2026 18:46

clearly the visit is on behest of the govt. Given what Trump has said today, it would be utterly ridiculous for any of our government representatives to visit the white house at this time.

HelenaWilson · 07/04/2026 18:47

Fair enough to not want him to go, but that's up to the elected government not him. He should do what he's told.

Constitutionally, he can advise the government (privately) that he doesn't think it's a good idea, but if the govt. insists, he has to go.

Look at some of the visits the late Queen made, and visits she hosted, that she probably would have preferred not to.

Luckyingame · 07/04/2026 18:53

Let it go, that ship has sailed long ago.

Hallamule · 07/04/2026 18:54

ShetlandishMum · 07/04/2026 18:21

Not his choice or call. Goverment decision.

Of course it's his choice, they can't order him to go.

IdaGlossop · 07/04/2026 18:58

Hallamule · 07/04/2026 18:54

Of course it's his choice, they can't order him to go.

Constitutionally, it would be a grave error for a UK monarch to refuse to do the government's bidding over a state visit.

Hallamule · 07/04/2026 19:01

Of course but I'm pretty sure Charlie Boy and Keir are both adept enough at politics to ensure it doesnt come to that
