The man has been desperately ill, give him a break

What has that got to do with him not going to visit Trump? 🥴 And how do you know he was ‘desperately’ ill? Nothing since his diagnosis or treatment has implied this.

The royals are really puppets for the government. They don’t independently choose countries to visit, nor can they refuse outright because this would risk interfering with government policy.

Hallamule · 07/04/2026 18:54

Of course it's his choice, they can't order him to go.

FFS 🙄🙄🙄

The man has/had cancer. At his advanced age that’s desperately ill by default

YSianiFlewog · 07/04/2026 19:07

I'm predicting a convenient infection - nothing life threatening, but enough to cancel foreign travel. I think it's the only sensible way out of this without enraging Trump.

Absolute ageist nonsense.

Fair enough to not want him to go, but that's up to the elected government not him. He should do what he's told.

Constitutionally, he can advise the government (privately) that he doesn't think it's a good idea, but if the govt. insists, he has to go.

Look at some of the visits the late Queen made, and visits she hosted, that she probably would have preferred not to.

Yep exactly. The job is either doing the visits/hosting as per instructions, with or without private protests to the government, or step aside. As a man pushing 80 and receiving ongoing cancer treatment it's not like he wouldn't have a credible reason to abdicate if he preferred to be discreet.

I've no attachment to the monarchy, but he doesn't deserve criticism for doing what the democratically elected government tell him.

Hallamule · 07/04/2026 19:01

Of course but I'm pretty sure Charlie Boy and Keir are both adept enough at politics to ensure it doesnt come to that

You can’t possibly mean that the uk government and monarchy might know better how to handle international relations than some random mumsnetter can you?! GASP.

Not a cance..if he can't do the job he needs to step down.

He's doing the job.

hes been asked (told) to go by the government & he's going, but you're complaining about it. Its not a choice HE is making.

Sadly I think they will have to send a senior Royal if not the King.

I would hope behind the scenes officials are brainstorming options on how Trump can “win” whilst not having to resort to bombing Iran.

I think they should go but Camilla should visit the victims of Epstein.

Who is to say that she will not?

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 07/04/2026 18:44

If they bomb the shit out of Iran tonight as threatened, I imagine the visit will have to be cancelled. For all that UK governments of all stripes tend to suck up to the US, I am not sure that they could get away with sending the king in to sit alongside a war criminal of such magnitude.

Who would you like the UK government to suck up to?

'King Charles is a nice man. A very nice man. I like him. We get on well. And Prince William. He's fantastic. Handsome man. Very handsome. And his wife. I sat next to her. She was dressed as Trump Tower. A column of gold. Beautiful. Melania liked her too. They spent time together. But I'm not sure the king is ill. Not sure. He's got very good doctors and all the best medicines. The very best. Keir Starmer is very, very weak. He's told him not to come.'

If they are going expressly for the purpose of bettering the "special" relationship then how pissing off Trump help?

Be a laugh if they decided this was just the job for Hazza.

Not on behalf of me he isn't.

Oh, well in that case, I’m sure he’ll be happy to change his plans to oblige you.

😄 And Megan. 'She's terrible.'

Princess Anne should go. She's have Trump, Rubio, Vance and Iran sorted in a couple of hours.

I would like the UK government to build close ties with its allies without blindly sucking up to anyone.

Its not really a job as such is it?

More like a poisoned challice. Sell your soul to the Devil type situation

And for people saying 'he isnt visiting on behalf of me'

Well he is, given the country is longer and more widespread than just us as indivisuals and also the relationship with America more than just their current government and our current government.

Its a mere blip in time, thats all.

previouslyknownas · 07/04/2026 19:31

You expect a man who wanted to be a tampon to man up

I admire your enthusiasm 😂

I was rather impressed that Charles wanted to be Camilla's tampon (but not just any old tampon). Not fear of female physicality from our monarch.

Thetreeisdownnow · 07/04/2026 19:37

I’m sure King Charles would rather not go either but it seems that the government is sending the poor bloke to try and keep the loose cannon that is Trump feeling friendly towards us so we aren’t next in his firing line!
