I reckon by the end of this year, it will begin being phased out.

I am sad about it.

Sooner the better.

it’s a tax we don’t consent to.

those who want to pay for the BBC can do the same way we do for Netflix.

I believe in the principles of the BBC, but they have let us down time and time and time and time again…..

it’s all social engineering rubbish. At least dating naked or love island is honest.

Don't get excited. They'll likely include it as a tax that every household will be expected to pay. Possibly bolted on to the council tax bill. This is what happens in some other countries.

It'll be a massive loss to Britain's soft power and culture

Murdock and his cronies will be delighted.

The abolishment of the licence fee will be a massive loss?!

I'm pretty sure that BBC Bitesize helped DD do well in her English literature GCSE. She memorised all the possible answers for war poetry.

According to their most recent consultation (closed a week or two ago) they don't seem to have any thoughts of dropping it - if anything the options seemed to be either making it compulsory rather than opt-in (not entirely sure how they could legally enforce that) or having a netflix type monthly service for premium content that people could pay for in addition to the license fee (pisstake imho!).

I haven't had a license since moving into my current house a decade ago. If they changed to an easier model where you could opt in and out on a monthly basis I would have subscribed a few times.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 30/03/2026 22:31

Oh no, I wouldn't be agreeable to having an extra paid tierd content! Either everything is included in the fee or theres no fee.

I would cancel in that case.

I am sad about it.

They’re just about to agree a new charter, which will be announced by the end of the year and Lisa Nandy has agreed it’ll cone without the need to review the existence of the charter every ten years so this is utterly unlikely.

ProudAmberTurtle · 30/03/2026 22:33

I'll be sad because the BBC used to be good but it's an irrelevance these days.

It lost me the moment it started saying men could get pregnant.

smallglassbottle · 30/03/2026 22:34

Just think of all the people that will be saved from unnecessary harassment by the stars who can't keep their paws to themselves. Not to mention, no more insufferably smug presenters.

RampantIvy · 30/03/2026 22:35

No. I won't sign it.

We get good value from the licence fee.

Closetangel · 30/03/2026 22:35

I haven't payed my license for about 30 years. Can't believe people still pay it 😂

Greyblankie · 30/03/2026 22:35

Because we watch a fair bit of live or recorded TV.

Vetiver · 30/03/2026 22:36

I’d forgotten how ridiculous the TV licence is, if they want people to have one they need to make it easier and fairer to pay, I’ve just moved house after living with family and bought a new TV licence today… £14 ish a month, ok irritating but fine, only you get to check out and it’s actually £34 ish for 6 months first… why the hell do I need to always be 6 months ahead on my TV licence! Seems like a scam, and made me think surely I should have been due some back when I moved in with family a few years ago.

InterestedDad37 · 30/03/2026 22:37

I compare it to the NHS - the Beeb has many faults, but we'd be idiots to lose it!

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 30/03/2026 22:40

I like many programmes on the BBC plus Radio so I would subscribe if it came to it.

However, I don’t see why others should be forced to pay for things that I want. It isn’t like that in other fields.

It’s also outrageously unfair that other channels have to fund themselves with advertising etc.

We will look back at the BBC licence fee with absolutely awe and wonderment that they managed to keep such a big scam running so long.

I don't agree.

We aren't supposed to get adverts on the Beeb, but every time I look it's showing adverts for what's on.

It's so Left Wing and woke it's nearly coming back on itself.

atomeve · 30/03/2026 22:45

Hopefully never. Looking at the state of the US had made me very appreciative of having a publicy funded broadcaster.

Strange that because half the time people are complaining they give too much airtime to Reform, which would be a very strange thing to do if they’re so left leaning…?
