I reckon by the end of this year, it will begin being phased out.

I am sad about it.

The BBC 'left wing'

Oh that's really got me laughing my socks off, and I need them on, as it's not exactly warm here.

And no, trans/LGBTQ simply presenting are not either 'left or right wing' (god are we becoming like Americans for whom even everyday minute things, like what form of dairy you drink, or hobby you indulge in, is now left or right)

People who address themselves as such exist. Yes their personal views may fall within either of those categories, but they aren't 'Left or Right' in and of themselves.

A man presenting the news in a dress may not be up one's particular street, but it doesn't say anything about their political beliefs.

Wasn't dame Edna a bit anti trans or something?

Some countries have turned the license fee into a media tax that everyone has to pay. I think this will be the next step.

Silverbellsandtacoshells · 30/03/2026 23:17

They are obsessed with Farage, same as Starmer. That's why he (Starmer) has a pop at him every PMQ.

Who are obsessed with him? It’s difficult not to be aware of him when he pops up on Question Time every few weeks. For some unfathomable reason Zia Yusuf was on Kuenssberg yesterday.

Wtafdidido · 30/03/2026 23:23

They will probably go down the line of Ireland in that if a household has my device on which programmes can be watched or even has a tv in the property broken or not they will be required to have a licence. Whether you watch or not is irrelevant in Ireland. Just ownership of a tv is enough

He (Farage) didn't "pop up" on Question time last week, even though it was from Clacton !

WhaleEye · 30/03/2026 23:25

iplayer currently has lots of adverts reminding people to pay the licence fee.

What is your issue with Pride exactly?

Homophobia can fuck right off

Do try to keep up. Transing the gay is the epitomy of homophobia.

To be fair, the chances of catching Farage in Clacton are slim.

He reckoned it was against the Beeb’s partiality rules for an MP to appear in their own constituency. It isn’t, he was too scared to face his own constituents which is probably why he won’t hold surgeries there.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 30/03/2026 23:27

Silverbellsandtacoshells · 30/03/2026 22:42

I don't agree.

We aren't supposed to get adverts on the Beeb, but every time I look it's showing adverts for what's on.

It's so Left Wing and woke it's nearly coming back on itself.

Yes, I hate that too: all the constant 'non-advert' adverts. Endless trailers for their own programmes, for their other output, for iPlayer, for how great they believe they are, for the TV licence itself, party political adverts (I know they don't have any choice in the latter at the moment).

It does make me wonder whether swapping all of these for other adverts selling beans, toothpaste or Center Parcs or whatever would materially make much difference to the viewer experience.

PottingBench · 30/03/2026 23:17

So what exactly did you mean when you said "other countries somehow manage without a license fee"?

Precisely that. BBC is wasting money by trying to perpetuate the myth that people are evading paying a license fee whereas, in the vast majority of cases those people do not watch live content and, therefore, don't evade anything. Furthermore they waste £166 million a year administering the license and increasing the number of inspectors without securing prosecutions or bringing more revenue. This in an ineffectual system which does not exist in any other European country where national TV is funded with a combination of state funding and revenue from advertising. That's £166 million savings right there which should pay for, what, four extra male presenters or about a dozen female ones?

TooPoor4PandaPooTea · 30/03/2026 23:28

PottingBench · 30/03/2026 23:08

The poll directly addresses one of the biggest issues with the BBC, politicians being in control. There shoud be no political influence or bias. I occasionally read a news article and they are always biased.

Haven't watched live TV of any description in more in 15 years, stopped paying the license fee after I had paid in full for annual license only to have never watched anything live that year. Mostly played games or watched movies/boxsets in my free time.

Know very few people who have or need a TV license. Plenty of children's TV on far cheaper subscriptions. Maybe it is generational.

Lots of people like the trailers so they can see what programmes are coming up. This has always been the case on BBC as long as I can remember.

I like to know if something's on next week.
I'd not be so interested in sitting through 60 seconds of crap about beans or Center Parcs.

20 years ago I was asked whether I had a TV license when buying a DVD player in Currys in London. Hopefully, we won't go back to those times again.

But you've said both "other countries somehow manage without a license fee"

Which of those do you believe to be true?

Since when has getting murdered been part of an MPs job description ?

To say nothing of the criminal damage done to MPs surgeries.

There are 650 MPs, the vast majority of whom hold constituents’ surgeries. It’s a basic element of the job. They’re supposed to be accessible to their electorate. Your link shows that the Speaker manages it.

What are the taxes that we do consent to?

I pay tax because the law says I should do. I don’t do it voluntarily or from some moral impulse.

People who don't own a car, don't pay road tax. People who don't work, don't pay income tax (generally since some pensioners do) People who don't watch the BBC (or live TV) don't pay the license.

Do you think everyone should pay road tax because they use roads?
