To take up a bigger table than needed in a cafe?

To try to use a bigger table in a cafe?

I know it’s not always possible, such as during busy times, and I would never ‘hog’ a larger table for myself.

But during quiet times… such as right now! I’m in a cafe on my own with 2 dogs and I’ve sat myself at a 4 seater table.

I actually hate 2 seater ones. They are just too small and I get claustrophobic with all the clutter of cutlery, condiments, sides of veg etc.

I like to spread out!

I love dogs it's some of the stupid owners who treat them like babies and haven't trained them properly that I hate

I heard a dog trainer on the radio last week, discussing the current dog problem.
She said owners need to remember it's a dog, not 'a small person in a furry suit'
They are animals and to be properly trained they need to be treated as such.
Don't shoot the messenger.

This thread will be derailed by the dog haters. If OP doesn't like a cluttered table top, she doesn't

I think it more likely that 2 dogs won't fit under a smaller table tbh.

They didn’t lie under the table anyway.

You can have all the tables you want because loads of people will leave or not bother coming in at all because of your two mutts. I wonder why it isn’t busy🤔

Suits me!

DH and I had to stand to drink our drinks in Costa last week because there were four tables for 4 taken by a single person (all working on laptops). Three of the four were men.

I was pissed off by them all, regardless of sex. It’s selfish to take a big table when loads of people are standing.

Id have just sat next to them

Yeah but it’s fully off smelly weirdos and drunks with no teeth! My dogs are more hygienic than Wetherspoons carpets, it’d be cruel to take my dog in to one

Edited

Dogs aren't the last word in hygiene, they crap, piss and then sit on furniture. If a human did that naked most people would be saying how skanky.

NotAnotherChickenNugget · 30/03/2026 15:35

I’m surprised by all the dog hate! I’d choose a table nearest to the dogs 😆
As for taking up a bigger table, as others have said, if it’s quiet why not, but the number of times i’ve been to places with my DH and 2 DC, where someone on their own or a couple are taking up a table for 4 (or more) when there are smaller tables free, it’s so inconsiderate.

My dogs were on the floor… is they why people on here hate dogs in cafes so much? Because they think they shout at the table? 🙄

They are on the floor under, or very neat to, the table that you are sitting at. The same table designed for 4 people, not one person and two dogs.
You are taking up a bigger table because you need space for your dogs under or around it,

So if they didn't lie under the table, where the heck were they?

YeaVerily · 30/03/2026 15:37

My local Wetherspoons is in a historic building, which is stunning and full of students from the local well-off uni, families, groups, mums meeting, it's nice!

Same here, ours is a beautiful old building with a carpet especially made in Devon to depict the colour and shape of waves on the sea. Cost tens of 1000s.
Nice people in there too - a mix of couples and groups. Never noticed any drunks with missing teeth.

So when you or your OH phone up to book a table how does the conversation go.

”Hello, I’d like to book a table for dinner on Thursday night please. About 7.30 if that’s possible”

”Certainly, how many people are in your party”

”Two”

”So that’s a table for two , on Thursday at 7.30”

”Well, actually, can you make it a table for four”

”But you said there are two people in the party”

”Yes , there are two of us, but we’d like a table for four”

” So only two people will be eating and paying, using a table that could seat four people and bring in double the revenue for us?”

”Yes.”

I’ve never seen any human cock their leg up and lick their bum hole either. No one wants to see a dog doing that, especially while eating. It’s grim!
And don’t get me started on dog drool 🤮🤮

Unusual for a Wetherspoons

Next to the table, behind my chair. I was next to the wall near the corner. So free space in the corner. Why does all this matter?!

I know. It’s so weird!… I’ve never met any such reverent dog haters ever in really life!

Someone isn't a dog hater to prefer them not to be around food service or for there to be multiple dogs per person. What an overreaction.

notacooldad · 30/03/2026 15:41

I'd be more pissed off you had ddogs than spare seats.
Maybe but it's the cafe owners discretion if they want dogs in or not.

Not really, there's loads of really nice Wetherspoons about. My mum and her friends who are in the 80's go and they wouldn't be sen anywhere thst was rough.

Oh yes!… the daffodils that are a bit wilted now, picked from their garden for that ‘rustic’ lake district feel

There is nothing wrong with daffodils in a café, but I wouldn't go in a cafe, restaurant or pub where smelly dogs and their entitled owners are welcome. No wonder the place wasn't busy.

I appreciate the businesses that describe themselves as "dog friendly", or advertise that they provide "doggy treats", or a "doggy menu" 🤢🤢🤮. It's very helpful to know which places to avoid.

But they are when all they can take from this post is that the OP had dogs and lambast her for it! It wasn’t the question,

But the dog haters on here cannot stop themselves derailing a thread, to moan about dogs.

Loub1987 · 30/03/2026 15:43

Don’t want dogs around my food when I pay to go out. My kids don’t like them and wouldn’t want to go into a cafe with them there.

Take whatever table you want but leave your dogs outside.

Tiddlywinks63 · 30/03/2026 15:45

Egit · 30/03/2026 14:51

Well, I’m back home now. During the whole time I was there, no one needed a bigger table

Or they saw you and your dogs and decided to go elsewhere?

Reliablesource · 30/03/2026 15:45

Egit · 30/03/2026 13:59

This is the decision of the owner of the cafe, not you.

I hate dogs in cafes and taking 2 dogs in is taking the piss. The entitlement that you think it’s ok to take 2 filthy mutts in where people are eating food.

YeaVerily · 30/03/2026 15:45

You can't have been into many because that's just not true.
The only one I've been in that was a bit dodgy was inside a larger city station but I suspect whatever pub chain it was, it would have been filled with the same people.

I was just ruminating on a possible conversation if you tried to book a four top table in a restaurant for two people. Sorry if I have in some way offended you.
