The news refers to petrol shortages. Not sure if it’s just headlines or clickbait. But if there are going to be shortages, surely the government should be starting to encourage WFH and using public transport where possible

Less online shopping would probably make more difference. But yes, I agree.

MrsEmmelinePankhurst · 29/03/2026 21:37

I think this is already happening in the Philippines and some parts of Australia according to the news earlier today. Fuel shortages mean that they’re WFH if possible, and I think free public transport for a month in a couple of Australian states….

ShakyBake · 29/03/2026 21:37

How about using some of that oil in the north sea?

Binfire · 29/03/2026 21:38

Yes definitely, we are seeing shortages here already. I will be car sharing and working from home where possible, very stressful and expensive for those who can’t I’m sure!

I’m not sure it’s that simple.

Free public transport sounds like a good plan

Tell me you know nothing about refining petrol without telling me you know nothing about refining petrol.

Well Norway are doing it and then selling it to us?

😂 yeah quick, get the oil! Not like it would take minimum 5-10 years to get close to it... And it's not the right decision anyway. Maybe this is the wake up call we need to use less.

Luckily I already walk (or in terrible weather get the bus) to work. DCs walk or cycle. DH WFH twice a week too and can also get public transport. We aren't heavily impacted day to day, but visiting family who are 200 and 90 miles away respectively will become very expensive.

MermaidMummy06 · 29/03/2026 21:53

I'm in Australia. Prices are crippling, but we haven't really adjusted for it, tbh. Shortages are from panic buying and storing fuel.

DH & I have WFH capability but no way our wealthy bosses will allow it unless forced. It's for emergencies only. There'll need to be forced to allow it.

I'm in Qld where we have 50c public transport, but it's not helpful to most of the state. Outside of Brisbane it's (almost) useless. People are still taking huge road trips (DB just took a 2000km road trip this long weekend.)

I'm getting worried. We need restrictions.

It’s not ‘might need encouraged’.

It’s ‘might need to be encouraged’ or ‘might need encouraging’.

Useless Where I live unfortunately as we don’t have public transport.

If people were instead encouraged not to panic buy and to be more cautious about using fuel it would help.

I wouldn’t have a WFH option unfortunately.

Maybe a horse is the answer? 😉

for some people WFH and / or using public transport won’t be possible: but wherever it is, it should be encouraged

In big cities most people commute on public transport rather than driving.

It’s not ‘might need encouraged’.

It’s ‘might need to be encouraged’ or ‘might need encouraging’.

Not if you're Scottish

It’s not ‘might need encouraged’.

It’s ‘might need to be encouraged’ or ‘might need encouraging’.

FWIW it is not 'might need encouraging' either.

That is really poor grammar.

If those who can WFH do, that will still reduce fuel consumption regardless of whether everyone can do it. It's not like xovid where we need to circuit break, we just need to reduce as much as possible

JeepersItsTheKraken · 29/03/2026 22:06

What's frustrating is that the Gov are considering some of the IEA recommendations, like reducing speed limits, but not WFH even though this would be the greatest positive impact on the citizen in reduced cost, and would equal the reduction achieved by lowering speed limits.

Asuitablecat · 29/03/2026 22:08

Dhcycles to work and the kids walk to school, so they're sorted. Dc's hobbies, not so much.

I do about 35 mile round trip a day, which takes between 1 and 2 hours depending on crashes. Public transport doesn't go that way. No option for wfh.

It’s not ‘might need encouraged’.

It’s ‘might need to be encouraged’ or ‘might need encouraging’.

People make spelling or grammatical errors when posting to social media. A lot of the time it could be explained by auto-correction on a phone.

It's a simple mistake that has not effected any posters from understanding what the title was meant to say. Bravo for being petty.

I put YABU because many of us have worked for employers where we've been discouraged from travelling to work by car since well before COVID

That will come online sometime in the 2030s, so that will not help us today or even tomorrow.
