To think perhaps WFH might need encouraged again for a while

The news refers to petrol shortages. Not sure if it’s just headlines or clickbait. But if there are going to be shortages, surely the government should be starting to encourage WFH and using public transport where possible

How about using some of that oil in the north sea?

Because there's not enough and doesnt belong to us?

Less online shopping would probably make more difference. But yes, I agree.

Surely one van going around dropping off everyone's shopping is far superior to 30 people driving separately to pick up their shopping? As in much more fuel efficient.

Maybe less shopping might help but if people are going to shop then I suspect online shopping will probably use less fuel overall than everyone making individual trips to the shops.

People make spelling or grammatical errors when posting to social media. A lot of the time it could be explained by auto-correction on a phone.

It's a simple mistake that has not effected any posters from understanding what the title was meant to say. Bravo for being petty.

I never understand why some posters feel the need to correct how others post on here. No doubt someone will be along to nitpick at this post as well, it comes across as being mean imo. For many posters English isn’t their first language and a few posters on here appear to forget that.

It’s not ‘might need encouraged’.

It’s ‘might need to be encouraged’ or ‘might need encouraging’.

"might need encouraged" would be pretty common to hear in both Scotland and NI

gamerchick · 29/03/2026 22:22

There's rationing coming now anyway apparently.

To think perhaps WFH might need encouraged again for a while
OutTheWayOut · 29/03/2026 22:22

Most - at least 80/90 per cent of our students come in on buses, and staff drive in to our secondary school from the nearby towns and cities. Public transport is there - but not that convenient for the sort of hours or locations. At least it is Easter holidays soon I suppose.

MrsClattenburg · 29/03/2026 22:23

What should I have to WFH (not seeing my friends and having a rubbish work/life balance) for the sake of Trump who started this shitty war of his own accord? Nope, I'll continue to use my car when I want to, thank you.

MrsMillhouse · 29/03/2026 22:26

I’m Scottish. might need encouraged is very commonly used in Scotland: appreciate that some of you may live outwith Scotland

How about using some of that oil in the north sea?

Because the uk Government issues licenses to private companies. The oil extracted belongs to the licence holder. Like everything else over the years governments have seen to it that the uk cannot be self sufficient.

Where do you live where public transport is free?

you realise that trump couldn’t give a flying fuck whether you use your car or not. But; if the petrol is running short; the UK government does have a responsibility to make sure that it is distributed appropriately

It’s not ‘might need encouraged’.

It’s ‘might need to be encouraged’ or ‘might need encouraging’.

This is standard expression in Scotland.

And where is this utopia?

My job can't be done at home. We tried it in covid. We saw how that went.
Can't afford an electric car. Ovulation transport only works if you live in a straight line east or west (large, urban area)
We only grow takeaways and vapes in my local area.

OutTheWayOut · 29/03/2026 22:31

What are the local foods I am going to eat?

Besidemyselfwithworry · 29/03/2026 22:31

I work in an administrative role in the nhs and do a mix of working from home and being in the office - this is mainly as since Covid more of the office space was converted to being clinical areas, as there is no room to extend the main hospital.
I am of the view that all organisations should review their policies to reflect the current situation.

YourGiddyGreyHelper · 29/03/2026 22:33

Usage in Northern Ireland (and I believe Scotland) would be "needs encouraged". "Needs encouraging" is I think a northern English thing and sounded really weird to me when I first heard it.

WhereYouLeftIt · 29/03/2026 22:33

Swings and roundabouts. What you save on transport costs by WFH, surely you spend on heating your home more?

begonefoulclutter · 29/03/2026 22:34

My job cannot be done from home. I have to travel for work, and there isn't a public transport option.

ShakyBake · 29/03/2026 21:37

Even if we could, it wouldn’t be any cheaper than buying it from elsewhere. We don’t own it!!

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 29/03/2026 22:36

YANBU. Yet another point illustrating how out of touch and clueless the Tories and Reform both are.

Mightneedencouraged · 29/03/2026 22:38

Agree with you op (it's enraging that WFH as standard has been phased out for so many people despite the obvious sustainability benefits it brings).
