For the first time in my life …

I will have no Easter Egg this Easter. Not have I bought one for anyone else in the family.

every time I look, they seem so very expensive compared to previous years, and contain less, plus I know they will taste of wax and saccharine. The really posh ones just look wanky (Waitrose, I’m looking at you) or have some form of gluten in them (biscuit pieces, debased praline crunch, cookie crumbs).

the kids are getting huge bars of mini egg chocolate from CostCo, by their own request. DH will get some Bendicks as per usual. I’m goi g to tough it out - at least until they are all reduced on Easter Tuesday.

I've not bought Easter Eggs for years now. Total waste of money. I did buy a Cadburys Crème Egg yesterday though.

Pineneedlesincarpet · 28/03/2026 12:17

My favourite Easter Egg was the Smarties one when it was owned by Rowntrees. The shell egg part was just the best. Second favourite was the Dairy Milk chocolate buttons one. Both basic and non fussy. But since the changes in ingredients and the use of palm oil they are now just not up to scratch vis a vis calorie consumption. Its a real sadness for me.

Applespearsandpeaches · 28/03/2026 12:19

We still have chocolate leftover from Christmas here. I’ve bought each child a small bag of mini eggs and that’s it. I expect their grandparents will send them a big egg each too.

I don’t want an Easter egg - I don’t particularly enjoy chocolate so I’d rather use the calories for other things, like cheese. And cake.

TheChosenTwo · 28/03/2026 12:20

I’ve never had an Easter egg as an adult!
I only buy them for my dc and nieces/nephews.
They can be expensive but the ones I got the dc were less than £20 each and the nieces and nephews have all got chocolate lolly’s and tiddlypots from hotel chocolat, I think they were under a tenner for each dc (although there are 13 of the buggers to buy for 😂).

MrsSlocombesCat · 28/03/2026 12:25

I love Easter egg chocolate, it tastes better somehow.

ILoveDaffodills · 28/03/2026 12:26

I buy myself a couple of the small eggs with the 'goodies' inside the egg (smarties & chocolate buttons)

I'm 57 & it takes me back to being a very small child & shaking the eggs! The delight it brings me is well worth the ££. (They're cheap anyway)

due to health issues I don't eat much chocolate & cant/shouldn't eat a lot of sweet stuff. Sadly as some of the new eggs this year look amazing!

I live the blend of chocolate Cadbury uses for Easter Eggs, I think it's nicer than the bars of chocolate.

Satarn · 28/03/2026 12:31

We can buy chocolate any time of the year.

Ive never bothered with easter.

Tillow4ever · 28/03/2026 12:32

Oh I love Easter Eggs! My favourite are the eggs made by Mars - o love that chocolate compared to the other eggs. Give me a Galaxy or Malteser egg any day of the week lol.

I have bagfuls of eggs bought to dish out between the 5 of us, plus nieces and nephews.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 28/03/2026 12:35

I bought some - autistic dd chucked the one we opened early straight in the bin

They taste shite. Cadbury creme eggs are tiny

Its just not worth it

I got dd an easter chocolate cake and will buy her a bar of chocolate and leave it at that

loosethepounds · 28/03/2026 12:35

I stopped buying Easter eggs for our children when we still had 8 each left in the cupboard in August.
I never started buying for the grandchildren. They do get a Good Friday ball.

Lennonjingles · 28/03/2026 12:36

My parents used to buy us a large bar of chocolate, I’ve done the same with my DC.

Nimblethimble · 28/03/2026 13:07

I sent my adult children the M&S Easter letterbox selection. It's not about the item, it's the thought, surely!

Didimum · 28/03/2026 13:17

Define 'wanky'.

ginasevern · 28/03/2026 13:44

Easter eggs have become so boring. I remember buying my son some really interesting and novel ones. For example, I bought a Victorian sweet shop one which was really quite spectacular. And another one with the egg mounted on a large dumper truck. If I recall, there was also one being held in the grip of a Transformer. These days they all seem to be quite adult geared and limited to chocolate truffles, variations on salted caramel or maybe pistacchio.

Tiddlysocks · 28/03/2026 13:54

We buy after easter. That means we get all the more expensive easter eggs half-price. My teens still enjoy an easter-egg hunt, and since their taste-buds now enjoy nicer chocolate, it is a win-win. The other benefit is that the little lindt eggs are a noice little snack to be found in my hand-bag when out and about 😊

Catza · 28/03/2026 14:00

I've never had an Easter egg in my life. We always had great time as a family decorating chicken eggs and granny would take them to mass to get blessed. I was never really sure where chocolate eggs fit in...

ChequerToRed · 28/03/2026 14:02

I’m mourning the fact that Lidl seem to have e stopped doing their chocolate chicken on a basket 😢

TheHouse · 28/03/2026 14:07

Suit yourself.

Quite partial to a Cadbury’s egg myself. Tastes lovely still in my opinion. I also like a mini or a crème egg. Will be stuffing one down after my big roast dinner on Easter Sunday 😋.

They are expensive though. So we have cut down. The kids only get one egg now, which let’s be honest, is enough anyway.

YourWinter · 28/03/2026 14:14

None of my AC were particularly keen on chocolate, none of my DGS are. The children probably don’t have a clue what Easter is meant to celebrate. One of the other DGPs goes all-out to spoil all her DGC with mountains of goodies, at Christmas and Easter, and I look quite mean (to the AC) because I don’t.

When mine were little I ended up eating most of the Easter eggs after one or two bites. My AC would just bin them.

AnonSugar · 28/03/2026 14:42

I don’t usually buy for myself but this year I really wanted to try the M&S pistachio one so have bought that.

I typically just steal from the kids 😆

My late DM used to dye hard boiled hens eggs in lots of different colours and decorate them as well. She used to leave them on our bedside tables while we slept. We would wake up to the surprise at Easter.I agree with @ginasevern I used to get some really interesting Easter eggs for my DS when he was a little boy. My DH always wants to eat any Easter eggs on Good Friday which we never did.

JeepersItsTheKraken · 28/03/2026 14:56

Yes! I only have one egg now, a giany Kinder egg, as it is the same chocolate as used in the bars. All the others thr eggs just taste of grease and stick to the roof of your mouth. Unless you push the boat out and invest your life savings in one from Hotel Chocolat!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 28/03/2026 15:00

I usually treat myself to a big one from HC - can’t really justify it anymore - going without this year

FarmGirl78 · 28/03/2026 15:13

For the first time in your life you don't have any Easter Eggs?

Are you boasting or complaining? Because I'm really not sure.

Elsvieta · 28/03/2026 22:55

If you're getting chocolate for DH, why isn't he doing the same for you?
