I will have no Easter Egg this Easter. Not have I bought one for anyone else in the family.

every time I look, they seem so very expensive compared to previous years, and contain less, plus I know they will taste of wax and saccharine. The really posh ones just look wanky (Waitrose, I’m looking at you) or have some form of gluten in them (biscuit pieces, debased praline crunch, cookie crumbs).

the kids are getting huge bars of mini egg chocolate from CostCo, by their own request. DH will get some Bendicks as per usual. I’m goi g to tough it out - at least until they are all reduced on Easter Tuesday.

Easter eggs have become so boring. I remember buying my son some really interesting and novel ones. For example, I bought a Victorian sweet shop one which was really quite spectacular. And another one with the egg mounted on a large dumper truck. If I recall, there was also one being held in the grip of a Transformer. These days they all seem to be quite adult geared and limited to chocolate truffles, variations on salted caramel or maybe pistacchio.

Definitely not boring! There’s an amazing variety of very original eggs in the supermarkets this year!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/03/2026 23:02

I can take or leave Easter eggs and not a huge chocoholic, so haven’t have one for many years. Haven’t really wanted one as an adult because I can buy chocolate when I like.

I buy them for the kids and we do an Easter egg hunt in the garden. Bear in mind my eldest (of two) is 17, and today asked me if we were having an Easter egg hunt 😂 Younger one is 12 and cares in a very meaningful way about chocolate…

I don’t think eggs are frequently reduced on Easter Tuesday any more @damemaggiescurledupperlip They bring them out so early to make sure they’re all
gone well before the bank holiday weekend even starts. That’s been my experience recently anyway. By Friday they’ll probably have whatever is the next thing in the shops - BBQ and picnic displays maybe? Or just cut out the middle man and start on Halloween? 😂

None of my AC were particularly keen on chocolate, none of my DGS are. The children probably don’t have a clue what Easter is meant to celebrate. One of the other DGPs goes all-out to spoil all her DGC with mountains of goodies, at Christmas and Easter, and I look quite mean (to the AC) because I don’t.

When mine were little I ended up eating most of the Easter eggs after one or two bites. My AC would just bin them.

AC? Awful Children?

Sgtmajormummy · 28/03/2026 23:50

No Lidl chocolate chickens this year?? They were my favourite too!
I’ve bought myself a huge bar of Lindt special milk chocolate with hazelnuts for the same price as a low quality Easter egg.

Beeinalily · 29/03/2026 00:01

@ginasevern I know what you mean. I still remember an Easter egg I had as a child that was like a hot air balloon, the egg was the balloon part and the basket was full of toffees. It was so beautiful! I like chocolate and appreciate an egg, but they seem pretty much all the same now.

NFPorterkeeponkeepingonNsoul · 29/03/2026 00:05

What happened to the cups you used to get with the egg?

Beeinalily · 29/03/2026 00:15

Yes, the cups! The world's going to hell in a handcart isn't it!

Ducktop · 29/03/2026 00:24

I love the giant ferrero rocher. And the chunky m&s eggs. And fair trade waitrose. There are some really nice eggs around. I'll happily eat your share OP.

SpidersAreShitheads · 29/03/2026 06:20

I really miss the days when the treats were inside the egg! Having them on the outside and in the packaging isn’t quite the same somehow.

I also agree @ginasevern, although there are some new eggs out this year, they all seem quite adult and are definitely missing the fun factor of eggs from yesteryear.

hattie43 · 29/03/2026 06:34

I am buying eggs for my gardeners children . They don’t have much as they lost their mum when she was only 33 and finances are very tight . I will also buy an egg for my mum .

mjf981 · 29/03/2026 06:49

Ah...easter eggs. We used to get 8-10 big ones from various family members. On easter morning we would roll them down the wooden stairs to break them up. Dad would sit at the bottom of the stairs and would scavenge anything that make it all the way down. Happy memories :)

BMW6 · 29/03/2026 07:11

I haven't had an Easter Egg for about 55 years!

DeftGoldHedgehog · 29/03/2026 07:15

I've hardly ever bothered to buy or request an Easter egg myself since I was about 12 years old. I can have chocolate any time! My DM used to give me extra pocket money instead- win.

Morepositivemum · 29/03/2026 07:16

The small Cadbury buttons eggs do the job for me so I always get one! Got the kids some eggs on Tesco deal(one in the pound shop that was cheaper) We use the chocolate left over (if there’s any), to make a biscuit cake so no waste. We’ll also paint some Easter moulds we have an do a small hunt with a few mini eggs.

SouthernNights59 · 29/03/2026 07:27

I've already bought myself two packs of marshmallow ones, eaten them all and bought a third today. I miss my parents at Easter, especially my DM who would buy me heaps of chocolate eggs.

I'm 66 and the day I'm too miserable to enjoy Easter eggs it will be time to check out 😄

AnotherDogWontHurt · 29/03/2026 07:33

We still buy our kids who are aged between 17 and 23 lots of Easter eggs and other chocolate for Easter. This year, I forgot to tell my partner that I’d bought some and he then added a load to the online shop, so there will be more than usual. 😬

I don’t eat dairy which narrows down my options, but my partner and kids always buy me some dairy free ones. I have had some lovely and very expensive ones from them over the years. I love a good Easter egg.

ShiftySquirrel · 29/03/2026 08:02

I've bought malteser and galaxy eggs for everyone else, but for myself I bought a green and blacks selection box. I'd quite happily eat an ordinary egg in one go, but individually wrapped mini slabs is better for my diet! There's something about the thinness of egg chocolate that makes it very moreish.

Smarties used to do an egg that was covered in blue foil decorated with multicoloured smarties on it. It was the most beautiful egg I'd ever seen (80s kid). It probably had a load of smarties inside it too.

IloveJonBonJovi · 29/03/2026 08:05

I wasn’t getting any DD didn’t want one bit DH said he was getting one for his DS and he wanted one himself so I got her a mini eggs one just in case she’s gutted not to have one. I’d rather a bar of chocolate personally. DSD is 21 so I thought DH was being silly but hey ho

Newthreadnewme11 · 29/03/2026 08:42

Easter eggs already reduced on Ocado today, if anyone’s interested

firstofallimadelight · 29/03/2026 09:11

I get my 3 kids and 2 of my kids partners an egg each at around £12. And they get me an egg, I like the simple ones - wispa, buttons, crunchie etc

the80sweregreat · 29/03/2026 09:33

I Iiked the eggs in a mug. The mug I treasured as a child had a quirky horse cartoon on it. I’ve not seen chocolate eggs in a mug for many years , but I haven’t looked that hard tbh.

Lostanotherscrunchie · 29/03/2026 09:37

Same! We have decided not to get them anymore. We aren't Christian so it's not a significant thing for us to lose.

We priced up three standard eggs (like a Galaxy etc) and went to M&S and bought nice snacks for the weekend instead with less money 🤣 and I'm SO excited!

We will never buy eggs again. I wonder if they'll eventually become less popular?

AC? Awful Children?

LOL

ADULT “children “

popcornandpotatoes · 29/03/2026 15:47

I buy it all as 7 year old DD loves it. I don't really eat them myself as I agree they taste like waxy plastic.

Littlebassist · 29/03/2026 16:46

You may well be disappointed…! Here in Wales, as soon as Easter is done with, there is usually NO sign that there was ever any Easter egg to begin with! It’s the same with Christmas - by December 27th it’s like it never happened. Before you know it the shelves will be stocked with “back to school” stuff and there will be no hint that Easter ever took place!
